BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: PR Fun Against UL Only Goes to Gameday

I’ve heard bits and pieces of Matt’s shows this week, and I think he is quite right about the Bobby Petrino situation and why UK fans should have a ball with his hiring over the summer.  Louisville fans have always acted as if there program had higher standards, even after the Pitino embarrassment.  But after the Clint Hurtt fiasco and now this, frankly, UL might be in the lowest tier of standards when it comes to a college athletic department.  And that should make for a summer long party of good jokes for the radio show, this blog, and fans across the state.

But let’s also face the reality of the situation: UL got a damn good college football coach to take over their program.  Petrino is going to continue the winning ways of the Cardinal program, I have no doubt.  Can he win the ACC?  Only time will tell.  But he isn’t going to Kragthorpe the program.  Which means all that fun we are going to have at UL and their fans expense over the next 7 months will be all good……up until the point next season begins.  Now, thank god we don’t play UL first next season.  As Bobby Petrino showed us last season, if you give him a full offseason to prepare for the Cats, the results can be not pretty.

Even still, on paper, it appears UL will have a more talented roster in 2014 than the Cats, plus the game is in Papa John’s next season.  We have to be very, very careful not to have our fun from January through October and then take a 28-point beating in November.  Because maybe you disagree, I would Louisville have rather hired a boring, clean coach and we beat them on the field, than they hire Petrino and we have the fun until gameday.  What we know now is that if UK is going take back this rivalry, Mark Stoops and Co. are going to have earn it and improve the program drastically because UL is not going to take much of a step back.

Here is my point.  I will be HIGHLY disappointed and concerned if any UK player or recruit or coach makes any kind of comment making fun of Petrino or the UL program.  From this day forward, this football program needs to recognize what Bobby Petrino means for our main rival.  It means stability and legitimacy.  It means that if our program doesn’t improve, this rivalry will continue to be very one-sided.  We are more than justified to have our fun.  We are fans, it’s what we do.  I just really hope that it doesn’t leak over to the real members of the program.

Anyone who supports this hiring has absolutely no morals. Its all about winning.
Congrats to WKU for getting payback for letting this bozo go back to the circus that is Louisville.

To be a UL fan today is to be totally ashamed by those who run the program. If you heard Atlanta radio this am, you would hear the real truth about this bum who is allowed to teach young men.

As a UofL fan, I’m not totally happy with the hire but, as I’m sure you were torn when UK hired Calipari. You probably accepted it and continued to support your team. And I’m sure you’ve enjoyed his success, as you should. As fans, we should be able to enjoy the game and not have to worry about the personal live’s of our teams’ coaches. We have very little control of that.

None of us should get too high & mighty with criticism of our rivals. And maybe not to throw so many stones when none of us really know much about most things that go on with most people, much less with those in high-profile jobs. We can only control our own actions. And going on public media with over-the-top bashing others doesn’t say much about one’s character.

Also, I’ll get off my soap box but I do want to say that I think it’s great to make jokes about this. In fact, I think we should. It’s disappointing when we’re reminded college sports is tainted and laughing helps us deal with it. And being public figures, they’re fair game.

      Just my 2 cents.

There are two things you know for certain with Petrino:

    1. He will win at any school he goes to.
    2. He will be gone, one way or another, in just a few years, and his former school will curse his name.

Since when does Petrino give stability and legitimacy to a program? And were they really lacking that? He’ll get you wins, granted. But he could very likely destabilize a program with his antics. No one is scared of Bobby P. Bring it.

Winning covers over a multitude of issues, here, UL, and everywhere else….. just sayin’!
I think Petrino will be there for a while, which could actually be funny in the long run…. what if he is NOT the BP of old? What if he has trouble recruiting? What if he isn’t allowed to bring in thugs and players that don’t do well in school? What if he actually has to play a legitimate schedule, year in and year out and he doesn’t win 10-12 games every year? Guess what? UL is stuck with him, lol…….

The ONLY thing that would be better than Louisville rehiring Petrino is Louisville having to FIRE Petrino for poor performance, or better yet a scandal!

Memes take on a life of their own in the internet age. If the entire sports world is mocking the Cards, it’s very possible that kids won’t want to play for Petrino because they won’t want to become laughingstocks. This could dramatically hurt Louisville’s recruiting.

We can all take shots at Loserville (me included) for re-hiring Petrino but the facts are he will continue just as Strong did to beat the tar out of UK every year. This isnt gonna change now. We are the doormat of the SEC and the state of Kentucky……Sad but true.

UL went through era’s just like UK has. Heck, Joker beat Charlie in his 1st season, and he was not great.

UK is bringing in talent that it has only dreamed of. You point has little weight, since UK is entering the future with a better staff/players then it has even had.

IMO, Jurich just knocked his stature as a leading AD down a notch by taking the easy way out and hiring Petrino versus going out and finding another up-and-coming coach to run his program. He has been renowned for doing this, but with Petrino and Pitino, it is less an issue of deftly finding a diamond in the rough and more the willingness to ignore whatever negative press the university might suffer in the name of winning at all costs.

UL fans might laugh when Petrino beats UK on the field the next couple of years (and it will most likely happen, at least until Stoops can get things rolling), but UK fans will be laughing harder when an upper tier program like Florida has an opening and Petrino runs off again in pursuit of it. All I can say is UL better have Bobby’s testicles in a jar as part of that buyout provision!

ul hires a coach with much successful head coaching experience. UK hires a man who has never been a head coach. What does the future hold for each program? Who knows? However, it seems to me a program is going to be better off hiring a known successful coach.

its so ironic how the ethics question has turned over the past 10 years or so… it was always UK who cheated and whose programs were riddled with dishonesty and corruption…now u dont hear a peep about NCAA sanctions and athletic misconduct…those yelling loudest were from UL…wonder what PAT FORDE will say about this??????????

  26. BTI, be careful saying you know that UK will take this rivalry back. I had high hopes for this program in 1978 when we went 10-1 (although on probation), in 1984 when we won a bowl game, when we hired Bill Curry from Bama, when we got Tim Couch paired with Mumme. None led to sustained success (and curry wasn’t successful at all).

I AM excited about this coaching staff, but unfortunately, Fran Curci was right when he called UK the graveyard of coaches. I hope Stoops changes that.

Louisville Athletics Director Tom Jurich should consider a job with the Jefferson County Department of Sanitation. He’s collected enough trash – Pitino and Petrino – to do the job.

Probably not a very good idea to make fun of a team that will destroy us in the following seasons. I do not like the Cards but sometimes the truth hurts. Basketball is all that is important people. Until you all realize this, you will continually be disappointed in the football program.

Nice article, Bryan. I know a lot of my buddies at UK feel the exact same way. They understand that past a certain point, the (mostly justified) thrashing of Petrino can come off as a “we’d take great character over winning any day”. I’m really interested to see how both of these teams look in 2/3 years. Should be much more competitive!!! On the bright side, if things keep going the way they have been, looks like UK will get both CHARACTER and WINS. Not a bad deal. Just need a little patience.

I’m not any more worried about him than any other hire they could have made. So many things are changing…For the first time ever , Louisville will play a schedule w/ a few legit teams on them. And, they don’t play UK until the end of the season, for the foreseeable near future. I think UL looses 16 or 17 Seniors. Petrino is not considered a great recruiter, and Stoops is killing it.
I’m ready to take my chances. Instead of facing a UL team that had all Summer to prepare for a one game season, we will face a UL team that opens w/ ND and Fla. St.
Thank you Mitch Barnhart for not hiring Bobby Petrino. I’ve been a fan since 1969. We are better than that. And if we aren’t, then we should be.

UL. Doing it the right way baby! UK will own UL starting next year. I dont care if Vince Lombardi is the coach at duhVille. UL coming back to reality next year. Stoops a recruiting machine. All’s good. Go Cats! Petrino will be gone faster than Strong is kicked out of Texas… which wont be long.
