BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Please Mark Stoops, Beat Florida Already!

I wrote this post before the 2011 season and titled it “Please Joker Phillips, Beat Tennessee Already!”  Considering UK went on to beat the Vols that season, I thought it might be good luck to write the post with the facts changed to reflect the Florida series.  And hopefully the same luck will fall on the Cats Saturday.

27 years.  Over a quarter of a century.  32.7% of the state’s population wasn’t born yet.  Most of us, myself included, don’t even know what we would do if we won.  Of course I am talking about football and the University of Florida.  November 15, 1986: Kentucky 10, Florida 3.  And for me, during the Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer years, it was a game that just could just mark down as a loss and not even get worked up about.  And some of the losses during the 1990′s reflect some of the players may have thought that too.  But, when Will Muschamp created a program without stability it seems, and Mark Stoops is trying to make UK respectable, suddenly it looks like the streak could end in no time.

That’s why I make this plea:  Goal #1 for the rest of this football season should be to beat the University of Florida in football.  THAT is now the biggest game of the year.

Just look at some of the staggering statistics, and keep in mind these will be difficult to look at:

Games in Lexington (12 losses)
Combined Score: Florida 481, Kentucky 222
Average Score: Florida 40, Kentucky 19
Closest Games: 24-21 (2003), 24-20 (1993), 24-19 (1988)
Biggest Blowouts: 48-10 (2011), 42-7 (1995), 44-10 (2001)

Games in Gainesville (14 games)
Combined Score: Florida 619, Kentucky 223
Average Score: Florida 44, Kentucky 16
Closest Games: 41-34 (2002)
Biggest Blowouts: 73-7 (1994), 65-0 (1996), 63-5 (2008)

UK has had 6 coaches during the 26 game streak
Jerry Claiborne (3 games)
Bill Curry (7 games)
Hal Mumme (4 games)
Guy Morris (2 games)
Rich Brooks (7 games)
Joker Phillips (3 games)

12 QB’s have started against Florida during the 26 game streak
Glenn Fohr (1987, 1988)
Freddie Maggard (1989, 1990)
Pookie Jones (1991, 1992, 1993)
Antonio O’Ferral (1994)
Billy Jack Haskins (1995, 1996)
Tim Couch (1997, 1998)
Dusty Bonner (1999)
Jared Lorenzen (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003)
Shane Boyd (2004)
Andre Woodson (2005, 2006, 2007)
Mike Hartline (2008, 2009, 2010)
Morgan Newton (2011, 2012)

Kentucky has beaten these opponents since 1986
Vanderbilt: 15 times
Mississippi State: 9 times
Louisville: 8 times
South Carolina: 6 times
Georgia: 5 times

Since November 15th, 1986:
-5 US Presidents
-6 Kentucky Governors
-4 US Senators from Kentucky
-5 UK Presidents
-3 UK Athletic Directors

What’s the point of all this.  Well, its simple: IT IS TIME FOR THIS DAMN STREAK TO END.  We got through the Tennessee streak after 26 straight losses.  Now it’s time to get this streak off our backs and move on.  And this is the kind of attitude that I hope the UK players take on this coming Saturday.  An attitude of anger.  An attitude of not letting the Gators push us around again.  An attitude of understanding what the last 26 years have been like taking beatings most years from Florida.  We stormed the field after beating Tennessee.  I sure as hell we hope get the chance to storm on Saturday as well.  And here is to hoping the UK players look at these past stats for motivation on why it is now time for this to end.

I love my cats but there is absolutely no way we are beating Florida

It would sure take some of the wind of UL’s sail if we were to also beat Florida.

#1, your probably right, heck we couldn’t beat Western. I however will be watching and still hoping for the upset.

I would also add since that win over Florida we have beaten every single team in the 12 team SEC except Florida.

While I know the chance of an upset is slim, UK does have a chance. Florida is starting a third string QB who had a snap bounce off his face, one of their best secondaries can not play until the second half, and they do have some injuries on their really good defense. UK has shown improvement every week since the start, if Whitlow can settle down quicker he actually does play pretty decent. If Smith’s shoulder works for him, and if our defense can avoid injury I really feel like we have more than a puncher’s chance. A great lot of ifs, still, I am going to be in the stands, cheering the Cats on and I will NOT leave until after the final second has passed.

For some reason, no one ever mentions the 2007 game. We are coming off the upset of #1 LSU and College Gameday is in Lexinton for the first time. UK is ranked #8 in the country and Florida is #14. They jumped on us and held on to win by 8 points. That game crushed me. I was in a wedding and missed all the photos because I was in my truck listening to the game.

Here’s to the end of the streak. I’ll be watching from Bourbon St. in NOLA while on a bachelor party.

Florida’s media notes have no respect for Kentucky High School Football. LOL.

“Kentucky has 12 players on their roster from the State of Florida. UF has no players from Kentucky.”

    7. Considering you find that humorous and disrespectful I’d have to assume you’re a freshman in high school. That or have the education of a freshman in high school.

As dominant as UK has been in basketball in the SEC, albeit a weak league the last few years, it is the exact opposite in football. If UK wins or doesn’t win this week the football program is and always has been irrelevant in the league. If you look at the lifetime results in shows that in a football league the UK program is a bottom feeder and beyond popular belief is marginally better than Vandy and Miss St

    Kentucky vs Alabama (2-35-1) .066*
    Kentucky vs Arkansas (4-2) .667#
    Kentucky vs Auburn (6-25-1) .203
    Kentucky vs Florida (17-44) .279
    Kentucky vs Georgia (12-50-2) .203
    Kentucky vs LSU (16-38-1) .300
Kentucky vs Mississippi State (20-18) .526
Kentucky vs Ole Miss (13-27-1) .329
Kentucky vs South Carolina (7-14-1) .341
    Kentucky vs Tennessee (23-74-9) .259
    Kentucky vs Vanderbilt (41-38-4) .518

#2 (Old Cat), not sure I agree with you. True, it might make U of L’s Sugar Bowl win a bit less impressive but that’s history as far as I’m concerned. A UK win over the Gators would make the Card’s not-so-dominating win at Commonwealth look better while strengthening our sorry S.O.S.

    Hope UK breaks the streak.

Kentucky has proven it can beat any team on a given day. I believe in this coaching staff and the new players, as well as some of the older players. Sure, it would be an upset for UK to beat Florida but it is more likely this year than in past years. We have to get beyond the assumption of defeat. We need to envision victory as a fan base and demand it. This is what the new coaching staff is working to instill in the players. We need to quit trying to be “wise guys” who sit back and acknowledge we can’t win just because of Kentucky’s less than storied past in football. If the Cats were to win on Saturday, then the whole season will take on a different look. It’s possible. Let’s believe.

    #11 (Rick), Yep, I’m a long time season ticket holder and a die-hard U of L fan.

Right now, UK’s success will only help the Cardinals. So, yeah, even if it hurts a bit, I’ll be pulling for them.

To all of those who believe we are more likely to beat Florida this season than in past seasons, what have you seen from this team that tells you that? Ranked 117th in the country in 3rd down efficiency; dominated by Western, who was dominated by UT, who was dominated by this Florida team.
