BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: How UK Football Can Actually Get Respect

Look, inside this fanbase we know what the last 2 years have been.  2018 was a truly historic year for Kentucky football.  10 wins, beating Florida, and a win over Penn State in a New Year’s Bowl equals the best year in modern UK history.  Last year’s team faced enormous obstacles and still pulled off an 8-win season with no quarterback.  The program has put a bunch of players into the NFL during the Mark Stoops tenure, they have clearly taken over dominance over their rival, and there isn’t a game on the schedule that Kentucky isn’t competitive in anymore.  And yet, I think most outside the program still think of Kentucky as either a fringe decent program or the same bum program we had been.

So what does Kentucky have to do to get that to change?  Clearly 10 wins didn’t do it.  Clearly Josh Allen and Benny Snell and Lynn Bowden didn’t do it.  So what is Kentucky not doing that they will need to do to get national respect.  I think there are 3 things on the table:

-Beat Georgia
There are only 2 teams that Mark Stoops has played multiple times during his tenure at Kentucky and not beaten.  One of them is Alabama, who Stoops is 0-2 against.  And the other is Georgia, who Stoops is 0-7 against.  Georgia is one of the 5 best programs in the country right now and the cream of the crop in the SEC East.  But at some point if the Cats are to gain any kind of respect, they’ve got to beat UGA.  And we also have to be honest, the Cats haven’t been particularly close to beating the Dawgs either.  I guess they’ve been somewhat competitive over the last 2 years, at least by the eye test.  But the scores of those 2 games were 34-17 and 21-0.  So you can’t really say we are competitive with Georgia right now.  Take a game from them and you certainly get national respect.

-Beat a Top 10 team
Mark Stoops has had 9 chances against Top 10 teams and went 0-9.  The scores of those games have been 27-13, 48-7, 48-17, 45-31, 34-6, 42-13, 34-17, 29-21, and 21-0.  The only legitimate chance to win against a Top 10 opponent was Florida last year but otherwise Kentucky has been soundly beaten in all other games.  This year, Georgia, Florida, and Auburn could all be in the Top 10 when UK plays them.  And while UK only gets one of those games at home, the limited capacity at home stadiums should help the Cats in the other 2 games.  Get a win in any of those contests and you get respect immediately.

-Have an All-SEC Quarterback
Look, Benny Snell was great.  Josh Allen was the national defensive player of the year.  But the quarterback position has always been the main point of focus on a national scale.  And Kentucky has just been “managing” the quarterback position for many years.  Stephen Johnson was a wonderful leader.  And Terry Wilson has shown flashes before his injury.  But UK hasn’t had a quarterback who could literally take over a game since…….Andre Woodson?  And don’t give me Randall Cobb or Lynn Bowden as rebuttals.  Woodson was the last All-SEC quarterback, making 2nd team in 2007.  The last 1st team All-SEC quarterback was Tim Couch in 1998.  Point being, UK has filled in the gaps nicely at the QB position but it is overdue we had a star.  I hope it’s Terry Wilson this year.

If not these 3 things, what do you think Kentucky needs to do?  And it has to be something we haven’t done.

    My 3:

Coaches need to show an ability to adjust midgame. Stoops consistently looks outmatched on the field.

Stop giving away games to terrible tennessee teams. We cant get respect until we can consistently beat the second tier of SEC schools, why are you worried about Georgia or top 10 teams?

Stop calling marginal talents that were considering a bunch of mac schools “Yahtzees”. Makes it pretty clear we aren’t ready to compete on a talent/depth level.

Think you are being a bit too harsh on our recruiting. Our classes have been significantly better than they used to be under papaw brooks or joker and anyone before them. I’ll keep the 2 stars because the way we have developed talent especially on the defensive side of the ball shows that that ranking shit doesn’t matter. Bud Dupree zadarius smith and josh Allen were all recruits that went under the radar on the opposite side of things Matt Elam had an Alabama offer and Jason Hatcher could’ve gone pretty much anywhere he wanted as well both of them had extremely disappointing careers. Not saying this is always how it works out but our coaches seem to do a damn good job at recruiting diamonds in the rough along with developing talent.

Bowden, I agree with paragraph 2 (and it’s similar to what jboy says below). We should have been beating UF also when they were down and we choked it away, several times. Beating them in the swamp was just.2.SWEEEET, but the year before is still a bitter pill with the Uncover 2 defense. Last year was tough too. Granted, Terry was out, and Sawyer got hurt against UF, but we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory yet again. I don’t blame him alone (letting yet another backup QB come in and shred us was awful), but I just wish Sawyer would have fallen on his fumble, and we probably win.

Anyway, yeah, we have to consistently beat UF and UT before we can challenge UGA, but UF is definitely better than they were under McElwain, and UT MAY be showing signs of improving, so we hopefully can take the next step and leapfrog them.

We have to consistently beat South Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, and Vandy. You can’t expect respect when you find a way to lose to Tennessee every year.

Literally win the East. That’s it.

I can’t agree that Stoops seems overwhelmed and isn’t able to adjust. I think we out coached and out played Penn State this past year. I definitely agree that we should have beaten and need to beat Tennessee before we set the bar as beating Georgia. Our talent and depth of talent are unprecedented at present, and I’m as old as dirt. I think we can beat anyone we play this year, including Georgia.

Only way we can get the respect we deserve is win the east. We can beat Georgia and yet lose to Tennessee and would still not get respected much. I was gonna say “beat Florida, Georgia and Tennessee in the same year” but if we do that then chances are we would win the east anyways.

Just skip it and get to basketball. I’m UK everything. Attended in the 90s. I was at the the Couch-Air Raid game when we beat AL, but I quit the football team a long time ago. It’s – too – boring! Same thing every year, we get excited about beating the first 2-3 chumps, then boring from there on. Even last year wasn’t riveting until the bowl game. Sure Stoops has been a good coach for defense and running the ball, but our style is too predictable and boring. This style, as proven by stats in this article, will never compete nationally. We will always beat or be close in games vs weak or average opponents, but never against top tier teams like AL, FL, AU, etc. I’ll just stick to UK baseball, basketball, etc. Go Cats!

Real stupidity here. Many reasons you say are exactly the same in basketball Last 4 years we knew we had no title shot before the season began, this year will be the same. We play zero quality home games and that includes Conf play as SEC is bad. And to say we will never compete in football with Bama, UF etc shows more ignorance. We have totally outplayed UF the past 3 games, that is competing. UGA beat us on a last second fg 4 years ago and last year we were tied at half on the road. Couple a years ago we played at Bama and gave them their toughest game, that came from the Bama players. The football staff has actually had to develop players because they don’t get the top five in the country like basketball used to. Now kids are seeing what the staff has done for those lower rated players and we are getting high rated players, in contrast to the jerk above who says we still compete against the MAC. Wrong, We now get recruits with offers from Ohio State, Bama, Florida, Michigan, West Virginia, South Carolina, and other big name football schools.

Why throw in the subtle jab at the basketball team as if our recruiting classes still aren’t top tier? To say we don’t get top 5 is really ignorant as well especially with there being 3 or 4 different sites that post ratings. Apart from the Zion year we completely dominated recruiting of course you are going to have a few guys go to small schools to shoot 40 times a game we don’t want that shit here.

I’m just saying our style is boring. You actually proved my points. We might give AL a tough 1st half, but will never beat them without a next level offense. I’ll pass on UK football for now.

#3 needs to happen to get to #1 and #2. We have to score 21+ against a great defense to beat a top 10 team. That’s not happening without 2 different offensive threats.

    1) Beat the dirty vols consistently
    2) Quit laying back in prevent on defense with a lead
    3) Reduce penalties!
