BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: How Long is the Terry Wilson Leash?

Personally, I am most excited to see the development of Terry Wilson from last year to this year over any other aspect of this UK football team.  Wilson showed flashes certainly last year and also wasn’t asked to try and win games either.  He was the epitome of the game manager.  Great defense and run game behind him meant he just didn’t need to screw up.  That doesn’t appear to be the case this year.  First and foremost, UK will need to score more points this year because the defense will likely take a step back.  And while there are good running backs on the roster, they are not Benny Snell.  Everything points to more production needed from Wilson.

The second aspect to this is Sawyer Smith.  He was brought in from Troy after a very successful season there.  The motivation behind bringing him in by the UK staff could be several different answers.  Maybe they just wanted a better backup to light more of a fire in Terry Wilson.  Maybe they legitimately have concerns if he is the guy.  Or maybe Smith just wanted to be at an SEC program.  But no matter the reason, Smith’s arrival brings some intrigue to the position this year.

It is obviously Terry Wilson’s job going into Toledo.  And if Wilson improves and UK is winning, then it’s his for all 12 games.  But just throwing out this hypothetical, what if Terry Wilson’s stats against Toledo were this:

Toldeo: 14-21, 145 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

Those stats are fine.  Not great, not bad.  Completed 2 out of every 3 passes.  Over 10 yards per completion.  Only 1 turnover.  Well, those stats are Terry Wilson’s per game average from last season.  Assuming UK gets the win over Toledo but Wilson’s stats are average, what should happen?

My opinion is the quarterback’s leash, in general, is way too short these days.  Unless Wilson is turning the ball over at a huge rate or his completion percentage gets below 50%, I think Wilson should be on the field 100% of the time for the entire season.  Of course, if the team is losing and a change of pace might help, that changes things.  But if UK is headed towards a 7 or 8 win season, competitive in each game, but Wilson’s improvement is minimal, I still think he keeps the job.  If UK is winning but Stoops throws out the possibility of Smith coming in, I don’t see how that helps.  I think if UK rolls against Toledo and Eastern Michigan and wins or is competitive against Florida, I would like to see Stoops commit to Wilson for the remainder of the season, barring a serious downslide.

What about you?  How much of a leash does Terry Wilson have and what would have to happen in your mind to consider pulling him?

I totally Agree with BTI. If TW is getting us wins or playing any better it is his job NO IFS ands or BUTs. Barring massive turnovers or an injury, He shouldn’t have to look over his shoulder at all.

I’m with you on this. We need to allow Wilson to play this year with out always looking Over his shoulder and having to worry about getting pulled. Now if he is just bad, witch I don’t see happening, that’s a different story. I think Wilson has put the time and effort in from what the coaching staff is saying that this shouldn’t be to big of a worry this year.

Terry doesn’t need a leash. All Terry needs to do is stay healthy. He was a first year QB on a 10 win team and somebody thinks he needs a leash?

Getting crushed in the general election doesn’t seem like a good idea. And MJ would get destroyed.

This is absolutely true. And a local celebrity with no political experience that thinks his first job in politics should be United States Senator is a jackass.

WOW…Sort of like a reality TV show con-man celebrity with no political experience that thinks his first job in politics should be President of the United States?

Now is the time for him to run. Mitch is easily beatable. That, coupled with the decline of UK basketball, gives him a couple of good excuses to go for it.

Agree that MJ should stick to what he knows and keep KSR going. He would be totally over matched by MM…

A Democrat doing any good given their Marxist leanings in today’s party would do no good. However if jones is fiscally conservative that’s another story. But given his bleeding heart commentary, I don’t see that. Not sure why comments aren’t allowed on political posts

Another idiot who doesn’t even know what Marxism is, It means the government controls all resources and means of production. Where in the Democratic platform does it advocate that? Regardless, any progressive platform better than the racist and Fascist ideology your dear leader advocates daily with his non-stop lies and Anti-American rhetoric.

This was quoted in the KSR political post before this thread: He has impacted Kentucky as a political commentator . What a load of crap. Sure he is a UK fan and he brought this to life, when he was told it couldn’t be done. That being said, the democrat socialist platform is not what this country was built on. if it weren’t for capitalism, Jones would be in front of judges all day trying to reduce the sentences of DUI and drug offenders.

How to teach your kids about socialism. Make little Johnny mow the yard and give him $10. Before you pay him, take $7 away and give it to his sister Sally, who has not done any work, and leave him with $3. Tell him that is how socialism works.

Yeah, no one is talking about completely abandoning capitalism, only reining it in in the areas it doesn’t belong, like healthcare and education. The healthcare industry should not be able to game the supply and demand system in order to maximize profits on things like insulin, to the point where people are driving hundreds of miles to buy it from Canada or ration it out to the point where they’re almost dying. If you think it’s simply socialism or capitalism, you’re too simple minded to be having political discussion.

You right wingers are the biggest hypocrites on the planet. Trump is bailing out farmers to the tune of billions and billions due to his failed trade war. We are running deficits at 750 billion now with more bloated spending and tax cuts sure to come we will be running over a trillion annually. We are a mixed economy. Socialist and capitalist policies are intertwined … it is not one of the other. But you Putin/Kim bootlickers are too dense to know the difference.

Somebody just brought up education? Tenure is the biggest load of crap that exists in this country. No other job lets you average or below average and just coast. Teachers get close to three months off a year and they want to piss and moan about their profession. I do think Law enforcement and First responders should make more. There is saying. Those that can, do. Those that can’t, teach. Why are universities full of liberals? They hid behind tenure and don’t have to produce, feeding off the never ending government teet.

Why did health care cost go up with Obamacare? The government is the worst at running any business or industry. They screw everything up. Free market is the best way to keep cost down. If the individual consumer was allowed to join any buying group for insurance, they would be able to drive costs down. The two party system has failed this country, Both parties are bribed and financed by the same super pacs and corporate interests. The huge glaring difference right now is that the dems want to dismantle the constitution, piece by piece, until all that is left is total government control.

Want to fix healthcare? Simple. De-couple it from employers. My boss should have no say in what company/plan I must choose. Open it up with a universal exchange. If employers want to contribute, let them and give them tax breaks for subsidizing their workers healthcare costs. The government can also lower the age to buy-in to medicare, expanding the coverage and allowing for more prescription drug price negotiation. Obamacare can be replaced with this type of exchange making R’s happy and Dems can be satisfied that everyone has access to affordable insurance (with govt. subsidies for the poor…not illegals). But the bottom line is…Healthcare should not be driven by profit, period. Outcomes and coverage should be the goal for us all.

UKfanforlife…. You didn’t really respond to anything I just said regarding capitalism vs. socialism, and you’re wrong about too many things at once. Obamacare was not a government takeover of the healthcare industry, it did little to change the power dynamic of health insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industry. And everything you just said about education highlights how little education you’ve received during this lifetime. It never ceases to amaze me how confidently ignorant some people can be.

I want to see him get better at avoiding the sacks…not standing in the pocket holding on to the ball too long and taking big losses. 2-3 times of doing this per game is too much.

He doesn’t need to win us games….. just don’t cost us games. If he can facilitate plays without turning the ball over I think it will make Stoops job replacing him difficult.

If the game plan has to be changed in the first quarter of a game because Wilson “doesn’t have it” this game, you pull him. We won’t win this season if the full playbook can’t be utilized.

What you didn’t address is, what if he wins the guaranteed wins? I count 5… Is competitive in all the others, but is consistently losing those? Beats the teams he’s supposed to, but loses to who he’s not? Do you keep Wilson in, because he’s keeping us competitive, even though it might cost us a bowl?

    • kjd
      1:32 pm August 7, 2019 Permalink

No bowl is a no doubt about it step back. That’s what Coach Stoops said wasn’t going to happen. But, then, the only way Wilson gets pulled will be if Sawyer Smith really shows knowledge of the playbook and physical ability in practice.

Politics growing more corrupt by the minute. Not true. Politics was this corrupt over 50 years ago. What is growing more corrupt is the biased media’s reporting of politics. Matt Jones would just become another crooked politician. Who’s primary concern is getting re-elected.
