BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: 2nd Year History for UK Football Coaches

Jerry Claiborne, the best 2nd year improvement in UK History

Mark Stoops is entering his 2nd year as the head coach of the football team, and I think fans have been incredibly patient with Stoops and his rebuilding of the program.  I don’t think there are many fans calling for a Bowl or Bust season.  But that doesn’t mean that fans don’t need improvement from Year 1 to Year 2.  A 2-10 season, especially one that is winless in the SEC, just won’t fly this year.  I think winning at least 1 SEC game is a reasonable goal this season.

But as you will see below, improvement from Year 1 to Year 2 isn’t always a guarantee for UK football coaches.  As you will see below, since Bear Bryant, it’s been a 50-50 proposition that the team improves in a coach’s 2nd year.

BEAR BRYANT
1946: 7-3 (2-3 in SEC, no bowl)
1947: 8-3 (2-3 in SEC, won Great Lakes Bowl)

BLANTON COLLIER
1954: 7-3 (5-2 in SEC, no bowl)
1955: 6-3-1 (3-3-1 in SEC, no bowl)

CHARLIE BRADSHAW
1962: 3-5-2 (2-3-1 in SEC, no bowl)
1963: 3-6-1 (0-5-1 in SEC, no bowl)

JOHN RAY
1969: 2-8 (1-6 in SEC, no bowl)
1970: 2-9 (0-7 in SEC, no bowl)

FRAN CURCI
1973: 5-6 (3-4 in SEC, no bowl)
1974: 6-5 (3-3 in SEC, no bowl)

JERRY CLAIBORNE
1982: 0-10-1 (0-6 in SEC, no bowl)
1983: 6-5-1 (2-4 in SEC, lost Hall of Fame Bowl)

BILL CURRY
1990: 4-7 (3-4 in SEC, no bowl)
1991: 3-8 (0-7 in SEC, no bowl)

HAL MUMME
1997: 5-6 (2-6 in SEC, no bowl)
1998: 7-5 (4-4 in SEC, lost Outback Bowl)

GUY MORRIS
2001: 2-9 (1-7 in SEC, no bowl)
2002: 7-5 (3-5 in SEC, no bowl)

RICH BROOKS
2003: 4-8 (1-7 in SEC, no bowl)
2004: 2-9 (1-7 in SEC, no bowl)

JOKER PHILLIPS
2010: 6-7 (2-6 in SEC, lost BBVA Compass Bowl)
2011: 5-7 (2-6 in SEC, no bowl)

Certainly, 2-10 is not going to be acceptable this year, but I wonder if there is a minimum threshold of wins you want to see this year, or is it simply a better product on the field more than wins that you want to see?

We’ll need to have patience the next couple years, but I’ll be happy with 4 wins this year. Stoops has got us moving the right direction, it just takes time

I think we can do 7-4 this year. I’d settle for 3-8.

This guy is right!! Wins are for the media and ignorant fans. We need to improve, show a better product on the field. WE must and I believe will compete with everyone this year, but as Cal has shown us….TALENT WINS!!! This staff is bringing in the talent!! Let’s don’t start acting like Tennessee football fans now, temper your expectations. GO CATS!!!

“I think winning at least 1 SEC game is a resonable goal this season.”

Only at Kentucky can a coach get paid a couple million dollars per year, go 2-10, then get a raise and a contract extension, and be a hero if he wins 1 conference game in two years. LOL.

(By the way BTI, nice spelling on “reasonable”.)

The best thing about this post is the “K” on Claiborne’s hat — and that’s not a knock on the post. I wish UK would go back to the skinny K/power K look.

WTH……KY fans have been patient with Stoops??? What are you smoking? KY’s football program has been an embarrassment for the majority of my 49 years. Even Matt Jones has been on record before saying it would never measure up to SEC standards……so can anyone suggest that we’ve been patient after a grand total of ONE year under Stoops. He’s signing kids that would have NEVER considered KY in the past. How about we all just let the man do his job, and cheer for him and the players.

This self righteous attitude drives me crazy!!!

Yes. Let’s give Stoops plenty of rope. We all know how it’s going to end.

the embarassment goes back further than your 49 years. stoops has brought in the highest rated talent in his short time here than most of the past coaches did in their entire tenure. as far i’m concerned he deserves the extension. i’ve always thought that we’d never be competitive in the sec, but if we continue to bring in talent the way stoops is doing that will change.

I agree with OH Catfan. Stoops is building the team up the right way . Anyone who can’t see that is either blind or ignorant.

NO less than 4 wins. 6 wins Stoops will be in running for SEC coach of year. Talent pool when he took over was the pits. We now have talent but are inexperienced and very young. I expect to lose 2-3 games in late parts of the game due to issue. I don’t think we will have as many blow outs as the past 2 years but I expect 1 clunker.

    • UKfan
      11:18 am May 7, 2014 Permalink

I agree. 4 wins minimum…anything more than that would be nice. Talent is there; youth is the issue now. Stoops is the best option and I am so glad UK hired him.

2-10 was accepatable last year. Look who they played at QB. What a joke. Look who they played at other positions, their recruits only. 2-10 with their recruits last year. Then they gave themselves a raise. If they finish 3-9, then they will brainwash the BBN that they still don’t have the players they need.

WKU gave them an A** whipping and didn’t have “their” players. UK football is a train wreck!

Stoops will be given all the time he needs. They will show improvement this year- but I don’t think it will equate to any significant wins. There are 3 AUTO wins built into the schedule: UL Monroe, UT Martin, and Ohio. If they can’t win those 3, we have a coaching problem, not a player problem.

After that there are possibilities for upsets- Vandy could be down after losing their head coach, Mississippi St is always a possible win, and Louisville has a new coach, system, and lost a lot of players from last year’s team (that didn’t really destroy Kentucky last year).

6 is possible if they can sweep the three above. Otherwise, anything between 3-6 is fine. But you must win 3 this year- you can’t lose to UT Martin or UL Monroe or Ohio.

The last game against UL will be for a bowl bid for both teams. UK wins the three other non conference games. Vandy will be terrible this year and UK will beat them. UT, Florida, Miss State, Missouri: all winnable games. All losable as well. UK needs to win one. That leaves us with Loserville.

Neal Brown, as an offensive coordinator, historically has shown a tremendous improvement with his teams from year one to year two. UK will be vastly improved at QB and running back. O line will be better and deeper. I think we will be OK at WR once Blue, Badett, Montgomery get healthy. UK will score points this year. Question will be defense but we have some really good kids coming in this fall that were part of the 2013 top 30 class that were redshirted . DL will be very good. LB is a little scary. DB’s: who knows??

The talent is getting there at UK and its only a matter of time before things change. That’s why the fan base is not down on Stoops. We are excited. Thats also why the trolls are on here. If things are so dire here, we waste one’s time on this blog. I dont go on the Auburn blog and slam their basketball program. If Stoops keeps recruiting like he is, UK will own UL and be very competitve in the SEC.

They have to win 3 OOC games and they should but Ohio U is not a gimmie and LA Monroe is will not be a push over either. We’ll see how Lou comes out of an ACC schedule playing Fla St, Clemson, Notre Dame, Miami, UVA, Boston College, NC State, Syr etc. instead of UCONN, South Fla Temple, and Memphis. Still no SEC gauntlet but tougher than an AAC schedule. We need to not only win at least on SEC game but be in position to win games as well. Vandy has owned us for 3 years, Its time we beat them or at least be close at the end to where we are driving for the winning TD to winh the game. 4-8 with an SEC win is minimal. 5-7 I thinkwould give us all a great hope for 2015 and of course 6-6 would be just over achieving so what can you say but 2017 SEC champs! LOL! Probabaly not in my lifetime but lets all keep the faith. That’s what true blue fans do.

I think 6 wins are possible. I need 4 wins to stay optimistic. They should win 3 over the inferior non-league opponents; then, either Louisville or one conference opponent. I agree improvement is more important than wins. If they only won 3, took Florida and LSU into overtime and rest of their losses were by 3 points I may be more excited about next year than 6 wins. I do think recruits are going to need tangible progress in terms of ‘wins’ at some point. Next year, we may need 6 wins to keep the recruiting momentum.
