Mississippi State has found its next head coach, and it’s a familiar name to the Big Blue Nation.

According to Pete Thamel of Yahoo! Sports, Washington State head coach and former Kentucky offensive coordinator Mike Leach will head to Starkville, MS and lead the Bulldogs moving forward.

After leaving Kentucky in 1998, Leach was the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma for one season before taking the head coaching job at Texas Tech, where he stayed from 2000-2009. Following an ugly breakup in Lubbock, Leach was hired at Washington State in 2012, where he has been ever since.

At Texas Tech, Leach led the Red Raiders to an 84-43 overall record and ten consecutive bowl appearances. He followed up his successful tenure at Texas Tech with a 55-47 overall record and six bowl appearances in eight seasons.

Now, Leach is reportedly headed to Starkville.

A Kiffin v. Leach Egg Bowl? That will be a thing of beauty.

Leach has always been on the fringe of football, and this hire is a step drastically off of that fringe.

So excited to watch this play out.

How? Or why did that ruin your day? Did you have a bet that he wouldn’t get the job or something?

Yeah I’d like to bet the over in the 2021 Egg Bowl.
Sir, we haven’t put out a line yet.
I don’t care. Give it to me.

My first thought was the SEC West just got more interesting.

Why are some of you freaking out over this? Good hire for MSU, but nothing to ruin our day.

      I agree with cargo.

I think it makes MSU a better offensive team, and he’s always something to watch out for. I’m happy he’s in the conference, but I’m not happy that we have to play him every year. But I’m not going to chalk it up as an automatic loss.

It may not be freak-out worthy, but it’s concerning to me. We have to play them every year and now they are a tougher out than under Morhead (yes, they beat us this year, but we were reeling from the QB injuries).

I agree that the Egg Bowl should be wild in years to come.

We don’t get to beat our chests about climbing the ladder in the best football conference while simultaneously having our day ruined by what a middle of the road team in the west is doing. 😉

Before we hired Stoops I was really hoping Leach would end up with our Wildcats, but then Joker had to go and beat Tennessee and stay 1 more year to ruin that plan. Always loved watching his offense play. Good hire by State, but sucks for Leach to be in Starkville…that place blows.

Well, he was surrounded by nothing but potato fields as far as the eye can see in Pulman, and nothing but desert in Lubbock, so maybe he likes small town living in the middle of nowhere.

His offense vs. Our nationally rated defense? We will beat them to death.

I don’t understand all this angst. Mumme never could beat a good traditional defense. Florida, Georgia, LSU, and Tennessee crushed him year after year. What Stoops is building is along those lines. Leach will bring a buzz but I bet when they can’t win more than 3 SEC games a year, they’ll run him out of Starkville too.

Leach has been more successful though, including being very close to making the playoffs last year.

In the Pac 12. SEC is a different animal.

Plus, look at Mumme’s coaching tree. For someone who has been under the radar since leaving UK, he has a LOOOONG list of guys who coached or played under him, and who coached or played under one of his disciples, that are very successful. Add to that those who learned from him at camps and it’s astounding.
