It looks like another in-state boy will be joining the roster this fall.  All-state linebacker Blake Spencer from Betsy Layne High School in Dana, Kentucky has accepted a preferred walk-on spot for the football team.

The 6’3″, 210 Spencer played both outside linebacker and tight end in high school, and in his senior season, had 24 catches for 378 yards and five touchdowns, along with 36 solo tackles, 90 assisted tackles and two interceptions.  He shared the good news via Twitter this afternoon:

Welcome to the fam, Blake.  Watch him work below:

……Betsy Lane is possibly one of the worst football programs within the khsaa lol Good for this kid, but most of his highlights & such were against competition just as bad as his team, if not worse.

Betsy Layne is one of the top rated 2 A schools in state for the past 4 to 5 seasons. You R WRONG buddy

They’ve won one playoff game in school history if I’m not mistake lol That’s not a top 2A school. Besides, with class expansions & all the district/region alignments these last few seasons 2A has become very watered down.

Wow, the first thing I noticed in this pic was the size difference. No way that kid is 6’3″ 210. The Broncos list Tamme 6’3″ 230 pounds on their website and Tamme looks like a monster next to him.

On that note, the twins are listed on UK Athletics as 6-6 and about 215 each. They’re pretty big dudes (and I’m really bad at judging weight), so I won’t dispute the 215, but 6-6 seems a little too tall. Although now I’m looking at some pictures and they seem about right compared to other guys (Randle, Young, Lee, etc.), so maybe the listing is accurate.

Welcome Blake! Hey Coach is a walk on from a small Ky school about the extent of the remaining fireworks before we get started? I was hoping for some larger announcements by now… How many more scholarships remain and who is being targeted? Come on KSR report sometimg!!!

Good for this kid. After pounding Betsy Lane in High School multiple times it’s hard to see how this kid was even noticed by the coaching staff. My guess is he will be a practice dummy for a semester or two and will transfer back to UPike and have a decent few years. I hope I am wrong for this kid though. Good Luck

You didn’t pound them the past 4 to 5 seasons that is a fact.

Nothing like seeing what some ex-high school duds are doing with their lives….dissing kids they don’t even know, on KSR. Why don’t you two turds (Louisville1Cal5 & EKY Football) go beat up some foreigners or something…..jerkweeds.

When are Matt Elam, Marcelys Jones, and the two Glenville guys getting here? Listening to KSR, I’d have thought they would be here by now.

What? Elam isn’t deciding until National Signing Day and Marcelys Jones enrolled at Ohio State. The two Glenville guys Smith and Lattimore committed to Ohio State as well. (FYI- Jones is from Glenville also). The Glenville trio had talked about delaying their decisions before the Army All-American game but later decided to stick to their word an committed to OSU.

Jesus, people on the internet are so negative. Give the kid some praise and let it be done. We dont need the “Well”s and “But”s. Just be happy for the kid and let it go. It doesnt matter if Betsy Lane is terrible he is a freaking walk-on.

Preach, brother. This comment section is like a weird guilty pleasure. Sometimes I actually get mad reading comments from these idiots since we root for the same team, but I can’t help myself. I keep coming back

Don’t get me wrong I’m thrilled for the kid, there are thousands of kids across this state that would love to have the opportunity he’s getting, hope he takes advantage of it & can get on scholarship before his time is up at UK. I’m just saying I live maybe 15 minutes from Betsy Lane & while they had a good regular season I couldn’t tell you one kids name on that team until now.

Congratulations, Blake. I could be wrong, but I think Betsy Layne only lost twice this season. The last being to Somerset in the post-season.

      3:32 pm January 20, 2014 Permalink

Yes, Betsy Layne finished the season 9-2 this year, losing to Prestonsburg during the regular season and losing to Somerset in the first round of the playoffs.

In all honesty, though, they play a very weak schedule and are nowhere near the upper (or middle) echelon of high school programs in Kentucky. Football-wise, Betsy Layne is to the KHSAA what the Cats are to the SEC. So it might be a match made in cellar-dwellin’ heaven.

Best wishes to the young man. However, I’m beginning to wonder exactly what constitutes “noteworthy” news on this blog. Is no one driving the bus?

Surely Matt Elam has had a bowel movement today. Where are the updates?

Not saying that Belfry is another Trinity, but we could probably land a couple diamonds in the rough every now and then from there. Maybe another David Jones or something. One thing about it they would already be well disciplined and very well coached.
