Here we go. The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the Big Ten has canceled the 2020 football season, confirming several rumors from over the past 48 hours. As Dan Patrick said this morning, the Big Ten presidents voted 12-2 to cancel the season, with Nebraska and Iowa dissenting.

The Big Ten has voted to cancel the 2020 college football season in a historic move that stems from concerns related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, multiple people with knowledge of the decision confirmed to the Free Press.

The sources requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the decision.

A formal announcement is expected tomorrow. On his show, Patrick said the Pac-12 is expected to follow suit, the Big 12 and ACC are still on the fence, and the SEC is holding out in hopes of finding a way to salvage the season.

I hate 2020.

Like my governor said, no reason for the SEC and ACC to following the lunacy of the Big 10. Play on.

If Kentucky can play, I will be happy but I feel for Ohio State fans.

I have a hard time feeling anything close to sympathy for OSU fans.

Since we’re getting to much talent from Ohio anyway, tell them to turn in their red & silver for blue & white. 😉

This will devastate ESPN. They love the Big We Can’t Count and hate covering the SEC.

ESPN runs at least one op ed every day about how the season will be shut down. It’s like they want to become a political channel now.

A whole lot of media folks seem to think they can continue to be sports reporters if there are no sports.

And these “reporters” and networks do NOT want to be proven wrong. Many of them are actually pulling for the season to sink so they can be proven right to so we all know how smart they are. IMO at least.

this is the only way the big 10 can avoid another year of embarrassment in football.

It would be terrific to create a super conference this year and give the middle finger to those that sit out. Let’s see which athletes end up benefiting the most in the end. My money is on the kids that get to play.

As nuts as most of your posts are, including this one to a degree, you’re right. I’ve been wondering about who is national champ if all other conferences cancel. It’s got to be the SEC champ. Maybe the ACC will hang in there and it will be an all SEC/ACC CFP. If any of these other leagues say “Wait! What about us? We plan to play in the spring!” Tough crap! They’re not going to play in the spring anyway, and they know it IMO. Two seasons in nine months ain’t happenin’.

Just accept this gang and move on. You can survive without sports for a year or two. This isn’t life and death…the virus actually is.

But it is life and death for many of the millions who have lost jobs and businesses. Alcohol consumption and suicides are way up. That’s what concerns me. Now networks, schools, vendors, and who knows who all (you would know better than me because of the business you’re in) will have to lay off more employees because of loss of revenue.

    No big loss.

I want to agree, but it actually is a big loss for the people whose livelihoods depend on college sports. Athletic departments rake in a lot of money, but they also spend a lot of money, and there will be a trickle down effect of not having football games.
