At 0-1 Where Do The Cats Go From Here?

The Cats needed to beat Western. If there was any hope of finishing with a solid record in year one they had to knock off the Tops. Now the Cats will have no room for error against the toughest schedule in the country. Here’s how the next five games are looking as of now:

Miami (OH)

Game 1 Results: 52 -14 Loss To Marshall

After having the confidence knocked from them like a swift blow to the stomach a game against Miami should be just what the doctor ordered. Miami should provide the Cats with a chance to notch an early season win and they’ll need to pick it up because after that things are going to be very tough. Is this game a must win now for the first year of Stoops or have you written off the year as the previous staff’s doing?

Game 1 kicks off today at 3:30.

At one point there was an idea that the Cats could knock off the overrated Louisville Cardinals. Then they went and made Brandon Doughty look like Tom Brady. When Heisman hopeful Teddy Bridgewater rolls into Lexington the results could be scary. Teddy has always had big games against the Cats and if the secondary leaves every receiver with 8 yards of open field again then he is going to have a field day.

Game 1 Results: 24-6 Toledo Beatdown

College football talking head Kirk Herbstreit mad waves for saying Toledo would knock off the Gators in the swamp. Yeah, that didn’t happen. The Gators looked to pick up where last season left off by playing hard-nose grind it out football. The Gators do have some glaring weaknesses but last season they found a way to succeed in spite of them. They look to be the same this season and yet another difficult game for the Cats to win.

South Carolina

Game 1 Results: 27-10 Over UNC

The young Cat will face their first true road game and aren’t they so lucky it gets to be against top-10 South Carolina. The Gamecocks looked sharp as they dismantled North Carolina in a border battle between the two schools. Spurrier has a history of running the score up on ol Kentucky and I wouldn’t expect a change of heart on account of Mark Stoops. Hard to imagine UK leaving Columbia with a W.

Game 1 Results: 35-10 Over Virginia Tech

The two time defending national champions come to town in five weeks which means there is still time to strike a plea deal with the Bama AD and get this thing cancelled. You never back down from an opponent but if this team doesn’t make some major adjustments over the next month then this game could get real ugly real quick. Kentucky should make it their goal to not get completely rolled by the tide.

With the most brutal four game stretch in the country it’s hard to imagine the Cats sneaking out a win in any of the games. After six games I’d expect to see the Cats sit a 1-5. A tough pill to swallow for a coaching staff that thrives on building a competitor. How has your outlook now changed following the loss to Western?

this was going to be a miracle season if they won four games. only WKU would have been one of those wins. lucky to win three, likely two.

For me, UK’s O-line was the biggest disappointment, with our LB’s a close 2nd. We knew UK’s secondary was going to be weak.

Yes, 1 – 5 for the first half of the season sounds right on the money. Fortunately, the schedule eases up a little the second half of the year. If they split the last 6, 4 and 8 is still a possibility.

Start Max Smith or I quit on this team.

Best chance to win bla bla conservative bla bla bla… We do NOT care at this point. Give me Smith and play AIR RAID FOOTBALL so the recruits and us can at least have fun. That’s the only selling point don’t ruin it…

4, actually it was! Our D-line was not able to get pressure because Petrino kept doing 3 step quick outs to his WR’s that UK DB’s gave 10 yards. On top of this, UK’s LB’s were down-right pathetic. They could not fill the gaps or make a tackle to save their life.

Yet, the O-line missed so many blocks that I felt bad for Whitlow and our RB’s. It wasn’t that they were getting beat by a LB, for our line was not even there to block them half of the time.

It is only the first game. The staff will make some adjustments. All I can say is look for Max Smith out of the shotgun next week. He will spread the field, and open it up for our RB’s.

Anyone that had hopes of 5-6 wins is totally off their rocker.

All that Joker wanted to do was recruit kids who chose Kentucky because it was their best option (recruiting over MAC and FCS schools)

Stoops is bringing in guys who are choosing KY over the likes of OSU, Notre Dame UF, and Alabama. Huge difference.

Give it time…. don’t let some of our whack-job [email protected] fans drive away the talent coming in. UofL and WKU may be better now, but KY’s schedule will always have our guys prepared for big games, and once the talent starts arriving….. watch out!

Lol @ ‘overrated Cardinals’. Bridgewater’s gonna go off for 450 yards and 4 TDs as Michael Dyer adds 100+ and 2 TDs as Louisville laughs Kentucky out of Commonwealth, 63-3. What’s sad: It might be worse than that.

Most disappointment with DL. I don’t know if they can pressure QB enough to help out the secondary. If not, let a couple of freshmen play for this year’s experience.

Joker left the team with not much of anything. WKU had alot of players coming back and a heck of a coach also. We will struggle this yr but give this coaching staff time. I hope the recruits coming in dont reconsider going elsewhere. 3 wins this year .

#8 you do realize that if you look at player profiles on Scout or Rivals, and a kid is from Ohio and HE is interested in Ohio State, so it is a school mentioned on his list, does NOT mean that Ohio State has offered him. Or if they did, it may be a conditional offer (“we will give you a spot if option 1, 2, 3 don’t work out”). I would agree Stoops has upgraded recruiting, but at this point, can you name all the recruits choosing UK over OSU, Bama, Notre Dame when they actually offered? Couple kids chose UK over S. Carolina, true. Do you really think Timmons was option 1, 2, or 3 for UF? No.

2-10 season again. Maybe 3-9 if we can get it together a little better, enough to beat 1 sec team. The question is, who in the SEC is this team good enough to beat? That team I saw last night looses by double digits to EVERY SEC team.

Not sure we will have any players to finish the season after this murderous stretch of games. Several were struggling with injuries and slow to get up just playing against WKU players. It just seems our players have been soft these past two years and have thought they could beat other teams by just showing up for the game. Sure hope we see improvements both physically and mentally soon.

10, WKU kept doing 3 step quick hitters because our DB’s were 10 yards off the their WR’s, thus our D-line could not get any kind of pass rush. On top of this our LB’s missed tackle after tackle and did not remotely cover the gaps.

13, actually many of the players UK is getting have major offers from the biggest schools in the country. Like Thadeus Snodgrass, Stanley Williams, etc. We have so many more 4 stars in general, and 3-stars that have OFFER sheets that are not full of MAC schools.

this is crazy….its going to take years to develop a competitive team. It will not be in 2 or 3 years but more like 5 years. this is not Cal and the Basketball team who turned the program around in his first year. It is going to be a long tough haul so back off about this year our schedule and all the other excuses you want to come up with. we stink…we need time ….a few bounces our way and its a closer game. frankly western was too much for our defense to handle. missed too many tackles, and our pass coverage was terrible. that being said I liked how coach handled himself…given time he will accomplish what we all want….just BACK OFF.

Those 4 star recruits still have to sign on the dotted line before they are ours. Its hard to argue that the coaching was anything but poor In the first game, and Whitlow might have looked good this spring against our db’s, but he is just not a passer. Arm strength and accuracy issues wont go away. He is a gamer, though, and played for a team that was sorely out coached. You cant ask for much more than improvement week to week with this roster. If it doesnt come, neither will some recruits. That simple. Much like with Joker, its not that they lost…its how badly they looked in doing so. That part needs to change quickly or Mitch will have Cal and Brooks on one side, Joker, BCG and Stoops on the other. I’ll gake half his salary to fail over 50% of the time.

There is nothing positive to say about losing to a third rate Hillbilly directional school like Western Kentucky.

I could care less if we are not as athletic as other SEC teams. That is not the current coaching staff’s fault.

But Kentucky showed no heart last night, missed dozens of blocks and missed a bunch of tackles. That is poor coaching of fundamentals. I thought Stoops was a defensive coach?

I sure hope the new Coaching Staff knows what they are doing because this teams needs major surgery and an attitude adjustment or else Kentucky Fans will not show up to the games and Stoops will loose the support of the Fan Base.

Next week’s game will dictate the probability of going 2-10 or 3-9. UK and Marshall are probably similar teams, talent-wise, and Marshall shellacked Miami. If the cats don’t decisively take down Miami, this season will be another embarrassment. Obviously, most of the blame can be placed on Joker’s lousy recruiting, but the scoreboard shouldn’t be the only indicator of how the team is progressing – in-game management/discipline, e.g. false starts, silly penalties, off-sides, etc. are on the coaching staff. Ole’ Bobby boy had no problem coming into an average Western Kentucky program and implementing his style. Regardless, it still was a game UK should have won. I’m also curious how all these new season ticket holders feel about sitting through a 2-5 home schedule and paying a grand or two for the season package. BUT WAIT, next year will be our year with all the new talent! Doubt it! UK will bring in two or three above .500 seasons a decade and go to the Hot-N-Ready bowl. The program desperately needs to move to an average conference like the MAC, but never will because of pride and the money the SEC brings in. And after every basketball season, the majority of UK fans will continue to believe THIS is our year, only to be disappointed.

Give Stoops time… he only had more time than Petrino. WKU is good… you know, for the Sun Belt. We just gotta tighten down on defense… and offense and special teams. Give us 2-3 years we’ll be top 25… or under sanctions or we’ll be right where we are now, where we have always been, waiting for 2-3 years every year.

Our best hope as Kentucky fans is to get contact banned from college football like the NFL is doing, our boys got trucked, mowed down and steamrolled by skinny Sun Belt children. Not an overtime fluke, we never led WKU, that’s how deep in the pit of despair we find ourselves.

  41. Blake
    2:56 pm September 1, 2013 Permalink

I said it before the game, and I’ll say it after. UK fans had a bad habit of underrating a WKU team that was solid before they added Petrino. What happens if WKU upsets Tennessee next week, too? You won’t feel nearly as bad as the supposed miracle worker Butch Jones will also experience a few face palms.

If Tennessee stomps WKU, and UK loses to Miami then it’s time to start being pessimistic/panicky. If UK fans bail after one game on a coach that has done quite a few positive things for the program, UK will not have a good football program for a very very long time.

I did not mean “hillbilly” as a negative. It has more to do with the size of the school, the tradition, facilities and money invested in the Western Football Program. Western is a fine school and many smart people come out of there and go on to have very successful careers. But Kentucky is the flagship University and is an SEC Football Team. The programs should be miles apart.

This game is scheduled to be a scrimmage for Kentucky and obviously something is very wrong with the Kentucky Team. It looks like a complete lack of attitude. leadership and toughness.

Stoops better figure something out very quick or the Fan Base will turn on him quickly and he will no longer be a Head Coach.

47 and 48: I was kind of thinking the same thing. Except Whitlow would be able to pass more often than Cobb, which could be even better. The defensive line that’s supposed to be so good is horrible (not to mention the secondary & LB’s that we knew were horrible). To win any games we will just have to outscore the other team. After all, I thought Brown’s mandate was to make things exciting, even if we didn’t have a good season. Why not try some trick plays? What I saw last night looked just like the same old boring Joker offense. If Stoops and Brown can’t see something has to change, then I don’t have much hope for the next 5 yrs.

Can someone explain the poor tackling and missed blocks from the defense? It should be on the coaching and not entirely the players. I really expected better defense (at least) from our team after all the hype. So embarassing!

May be our offensive players were just dropping to the ground when our poor defense players tried to tackle them in practice giving the false impression that the defense was playing good. I am really trying to understand what went wrong after a good (?) practice camp. In hindsight, were they really good to begin with?
