AJ Rose: “We could’ve called some better plays”

Kentucky did not capitalize on early opportunities in scoring position at Alabama, and running back AJ Rose believes it was a play-calling problem.

We could’ve called some better plays, or better play calls to get us into better position,” Rose said after his team’s embarrassing 63-3 defeat. “But it’s how the game flow is going. He called what he thought was needed and we had to go out there and execute it, and we failed at that.”

Later in the press conference Rose was asked to point out specifically where he thought things went wrong in the play calling, to which he said, “We didn’t take advantage of being in the red zone. We definitely could’ve called some plays to even the game out, balance the game out, run, throwing, we missed opportunities and field goals and things like that, but that’s just how the game goes.”

“Can’t dwell on it,” he added. “Got to move forward. Got another big matchup this weekend and we’re going to do what it takes to win this game.”

Eddie Gran won’t love that Rose (who Gran has defended) voiced those frustrations externally. But in Rose’s defense, analyst Jordan Rogers was critical of Gran’s offense on the TV broadcast, so Rose is not alone with those thoughts.

That’s a garbage move. You don’t take shots as a player in public. All this coming from a guy who quit running before he reached the end zone.

Yeah goteam first few series were fun. I think good coaches make the adjustments then we crap our pants and cant counter or come up with an answer. Have we ever beat an elite coach????

Rich coming from a guy who literally cost his team a win and just decided after he got demoted to third string to take some hits. I’m not a Gran apologist, but of all guys to talk, AJ should probably be the last.

Fire Eddie Gran. He ran a damn QB draw on 3rd and goal. THIRD AND GOAL. I can take a playbook from ncaa football 2011 and have more success than captain shitfordick

But he’s not wrong! I thought AJ ran hard today. Seems like being demoted to 3rd string lit a fire in his belly!

Play calling up until the botched snaps was solid. The motions and shifts threw bama off and we marched on them and then once the scoreboard changed Eddie gran started coaching not to get blown out and guess what? It got us blown out. Pitiful coaching how many 12 men on the field can you get in a single season.

I’d hate playing for these coaches on game day .i Like them but I don’t trust them.

AJ was the only positive in the game. When the announcers are consistantly criticizing your offense perhaps it is time to find a new OC and QB coach.

This has been going on year after year. It’s time to look at the head coach. This obsession with running time and time again while developing no passing game has Stoops written all over it.

I can’t hate on the kid for being a senior who has seen & heard the same criticism every year with play-calling and brings it up. It may not be classy, but correcting the problem that continues to have a light shine on it is the solution.

When you lose by 60 points, I have no problem with a kid saying they didn’t call the right plays and execute the called plays. This was all systems failure. It would be nice to say it was a bad game, but their record tells the story. I’m hoping to see something to at least have some hope for next year or the coming years. It’s tough to see anything positive though to be painfully honest.

Hell they let Alabama run a 2 minute drill at the half in a prevent defense and then took a fair catch on a PUNT. Wtf cms

No matter what play was called we couldn’t execute it did it seem obvious that as soon as the coach knew it was about to get out of hand they took Wilson out to justify his continued playing time. There’s no way he gives us any better chance to win and Gatewood looks horribly slow. Start the future now. It could only help the cause for next year. Might as well get all of our young men a head start on next year being this season is a bust. That would seem to have more upside than a redshirt. But I’m gonna trust coach and try to erase 2020 entirely from memory.

I would hope it’s abundantly clear UK will never compete against the big boys without a guy who can confidently throw the ball. We don’t need a running QB. We have running backs.
We need a threat to throw. Time for Beau.

AJ Rose has been a disappointment. For him to bad mouth the coaching staff, although I’m sure he was not realizing the levity of his comments… that’s disgusting. But, Eddie Grant has been targeted by many in the media including this site, so quickly after last years miraculous play calls and moves. It speaks a lot to why its difficult to compete in the SEC when you consider the media tears down even successful football coaches at the like of UK.
