A Few Notes from Mark Stoops Before Tennessee

—  Stoops kinda laughed at the thought of being considered for a head coaching vacancy.  Stoops repeated the sentiment we often share on KSR, “If somebody is coming for you that means you’re winning games.”  He didn’t want to comment on any situation, but you could tell he was more surprised to even be considered in the conversation because he hasn’t won enough…yet.

“I really don’t have any answer other than I’m trying desperately to win a football game this weekend. I certainly don’t need that question brought up and I don’t know because I probably haven’t won enough to have the question like other people have.”  Stoops added, “I need to win some football games and then I’ll have more experience in answering that question.”

—  Stoops took the team to practice at Commonwealth Stadium yesterday to get used to soggy artificial turf.  He planned on taking them there regardless of the scenario, but it helped for them to get accustomed to the playing surface in the rain, because Saturday could be soggy.

—  Is Tennessee a rival?  For some fans, it’s their most bitter rival.  For others, we’ve lost so much they don’t even think twice.  Stoops’ Troops know it’s a big game, whether it’s a rivalry or nah.  “They know we have a big game every week,” Stoops said.   “I don’t know if we need any more motivation to go try to win this game.”

—  Injury Update: Jason Hatcher has practiced all week and should be fine.  Drew Barker is more of a game-time decision.  They’ll see how much velocity has on the ball and go from there, but hopefully his services aren’t needed either way.

You can always tell if somebody’s from Southern Kentucky or Northern Kentucky… cause allus down on the South Side are bitter rivals of Vol-eks (EXTERMINATE!) and we enjoy the rivalry VERY MOICHE. People in the North part of the state think the Ho-cards are our rivals. Which I personally think is a joke. A rival has to be your equal; UL isn’t even close to being a rival, they’re just a perpetual punchline of a carpetbagger’s dream of a city college.

Read more of Stoops responses to questions about coaching vacancies elsewhere and, if nothing else, he certainly seemed to be honest – even if we really don’t want to hear it…

He didn’t approach denying interest in other jobs; all he had to say is his resume (wins) probably wasn’t as strong as others and that he wanted to go try to win a game this week.

I think Stoops is, and has been, great for UK but had hoped to hear him say something to the effect of “I want to stick around to see the fruits of my labors”. Instead, he said his resume wasn’t as strong as others…

I guess my hopes of him sticking around to see just how far he could take UK are all for naught…

Dude will be gone on the first reasonable offer is made. He will get exposed next year, should he stay. His game and value will plummet if he stays and he goes 4-8 or worse. Busting a move now before the beat downs next year, his fourth, and likely his worst, keeps his brand in good shape. Don’t blame him, for riding the gravy train as far as he and his friends can. I think he is smart enough to take what we were dumb enough to give. I have read UK pays him a lot of money each year for just 5 wins. Works out to around $800K per V.
SMH, this is as good as this job could ever get. Thinking his next won’t pay him like we were stupid enough to do. Or not. Good luck Stoops. Appreciate your te here.
