It’s open season on college football coaches right now as University of Georgia’s Head Football Coach Mark Richt becomes the most recent coach to receive a pink slip from his university.

After 15 years with the Bulldogs, Richt agreed to step down from his position following Georgia’s upcoming bowl game, which will be announced on Dec. 6. Richt will leave Georgia as the second-winningest coach in Bulldog’s history with a record of 145-51. UGA finished this season 9-3.

According to UGA athletic director Greg McGarity, who met with Richt earlier this morning, it was a mutual agreement that Richt should step down as the head coach.

The news of Richt’s leaving came shortly after Rutger’s released both the university’s athletic director Julie Hermann and head football coach Kyle Flood. This marks an abrupt end to Hermann’s short two-and-a-half year tenure that was riddled with controversy. Flood, who faced a three-game suspension in September for violating a university compliance policy, was ousted after a tumultuous season that included the arrests of seven of Flood’s football players on various charges.

The search for football coaches is about to get really hot, as college football staffs and athletic directors continue to reshuffle their decks in search for more wins. New football staffs  mean that December and January will be a recruiting Armageddon as newly-installed leadership look to fill their coffers with fresh recruits as many previous commitments will likely fall to the wayside.

Get ready for war, that’s all I’m saying.

On a lighter note, Les Miles appears to be safe and sound at LSU after a bizarre week of speculations that the head football coach would be receiving the boot in Baton Rouge. Even Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal got involved:

Putting the rumors to rest, LSU athletic director Joe Alleva made it clear the Tigers would be sticking with Miles:

“The season’s complete, and I want to make it very clear and positive that Les Miles is our football coach and he will continue to be our football coach. I’m looking forward to working with Coach Miles as he leads this team to a bowl game and another great recruiting class.”

I would hate to be a college football coach right now.

Imagine if UK was 9 and 3. No seriously, imagine it cause it is never going to happen with Dawson as our OC. Towles could see the disorganization in the program and wants to salvage at least something respectable like Max Smith has done at San Diego State which is 9-3. Unfortunately Stoops will probably be more loyal to Dawson than the program and fans who are guaranteeing over $20 million to him and his family.

imagine how good we could be with a new 0C? i think our record for the last 3 yrs should answer that question. dont u know we are trying to build coaches here, not a football program with a proven coach! hiring Stoops over Petrino was akin to hiring Billy G over Cal

I don’t disagree with the sentiment about the OC. If Dawson comes back, we get another season of no offensive direction. Max Smith had success, but playing a much weaker scheduled and a much more run oriented offensive plan.

Petrino barely made a bowl in a basketball conference – why would we think he’d do any better in the SEC?

Maybe because he was 34-17 with a 2-1 bowl record while at Arkansas? Not that he could do that at UK, but he in fact has already won bowls in the SEC.

Cats paw you do realize Petrino is not walking through that door, he gone, he is not coming, UK doesn’t want him, he hates UK, and you can post about him 7000 times and it won’t change a thing. Right? Its like your stuck on him, and I could make an argument we should have hired Gruden, or Kirby Smart, or Santa Claus, or dig up Bear Bryant and clone his butt and hire him. But that argument…like the one you throw out all the time….is kinda pointless ya
know? Heck if we had just hired Lombardi 50 years ago….or we should have given Denzel a shot….he seemed like a in the movie right? petrino…and his absolute aversion to the truth aint walkin through that door.

no Dean… it proves i was right all along. and it wasnt a dream! he wanted to come here at half the price of Stoops. our only chance of ever having a top 10 caliber coach here ! what is pointless is hearing homer fans preach “give stoops time to turn it around”. as long as fans wish to gargle that nonsense then i will preach reality to them.

HA!! He actually expects us to believe this.

Go preach your lunacy somewhere else.

I got it: let’s hire Petrino as an OC! I’m sure he’d have no problem leaving a team in the night – he’s done it several times before.

And we can pay him HALF!!

I know Georgia fans would like to contend for titles every year, but come on. Richt had a ton of success. They might regret this one.

Georgia Bulldawg football fan expectations are unreal. Ever since Herschel, they believe they should be in the hunt for the National Championship every year. So for Richt to have been in Athens 15 years is beyond remarkable. Seems as if his butt’s been on the line every single year. Hope he lands somewhere else soon and continues to do well.

You know, I swear as I reflect on this season and Coach Stoops I swear I feel kinda bad for him sincerely. Your first head coaching job is in the SEC? Wow, that is really amazing when you think of that. It really does not put you in a position to be successful. This just isn’t a league where you can learn as you go. You have to hit the ground running knowing how to have a super tight and organized organization and then it’s quite difficult. I do think, that being said, he should have hired at least an OC that wasn’t just learning the ropes too just like him, and that is on Coach Stoops.

You have just shown that you have A LOT more common sense than UK’s AD. Mitch either can’t figure that out or, more likely, knows it and cares more about the net profit he can send to other sports by lowering the cost of coaching.

If we keep our same coaches, I’m not sure if we’ll ever win no matter how good our players our. We get four stars who continue to stay the same or get worse from year to year. Let’s bring some coaches in who will get better. We have Boom who is a hell of a running back, so there’s something to build off in the offseason

How about we also hold the damn receivers accountable. Not saying Dawson is a heck of a OC but dropping balls is on the receiving corps. They need to be re evaluated as well. My next prediction is Ryan Timmons leaving.

So there is a coach available whose bad are dream years for UK fans. Will Mitch even THINK of going after him and spending the money required to get him and build around him. Nope.

Sadly, there is little you can point to on the offensive side of things that improved as the year progressed. The line stunk. Holding, false starts, and no pass protection. I blame Scharman. Backs, while talented, are small and frail leading to injuries and unavailability. Receivers got worse every game. QB play got worse, rather than better. I think Barker is young, immature, and not all that physically talented. All these things are synergistic and lead to a crappy offensive team. The defense was thin and weak but Forest and Johnson had good years. The young DBs also showed a lot of potential. KY will have a good secondary next year but probably next to nothing in the front 7. It will be brutal to watch them get pounded by SEC running attacks. I see no more than 3 wins next year. This train has utterly derailed. Not sure whether it makes sense to keep Stoops and company. I never thought I would be saying this but now…

Another fantastic coach who will go to another school and do terrific there while there, and here at UK we keep a real pathetic coach and his staff because it is the UK thing to do.

Bobby Petrino wanted to come to Kentucky because he was unemployed and embroiled in a scandal. You must be nuts to think otherwise. He put his girlfriend on the payroll you moron. Do you have any idea how much legal trouble that can cause a University?
