Everything Mark Stoops said on SportsCenter

Mark Stoops just wrapped up his tour of ESPN with an appearance on SportsCenter. It was a brief interview on the set, but he did manage to touch on three important issues: progress, the new defensive alignment, and the quarterback competition.

Here’s what he said:

On Kentucky being picked sixth in the SEC East…

“I understand that. We won five games a year ago. We need to improve, we have a long way to go and we’re very happy with the progress we’re making. We feel like we have a very good football team, a much improved football team heading into this year.”

On switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense…

“We’ve been in that transition for about a year and a half. We just felt like it suited our personnel a little bit better. I’ve been a 4-3 defensive coordinator most of my career, I just felt like we need the versatility from the 3-4 and to be a little bit balanced. Offensives are extremely creative in the SEC and I felt like it fit us.”

On the quarterback situation…

“There’s a competition. Patrick Towles played extremely well for us a year ago. We feel very good about him and the improvement he is making, but he has a very talented guy behind him that redshirted a year ago and is pushing him in Drew Barker. It’ll be a healthy competition.”

On why Towles hasn’t been named the starter after starting every game last season…

“[Towles] is going to have the leg up going into camp, but everything is earned at Kentucky. We need to do that. There’s healthy competition at every position. Everybody likes to talk about the quarterback position, but all of our spots need to be earned… Competition is important to us.”

Stoops also told the story of his brother not knowing it was his birthday last week. In case you missed it, the Stoops boys were vacationing in Destin when a UK fan saw Mark and wished him a happy birthday. Bob turned to his younger brother and said, “It’s your birthday?”

should we be more excited about the 3-4 than the 4-3?

Whether we nickel or dime it, it’s okay as long as we get the quarterback.

I think we can turn this thing around this year and win 4 or 5 games.

But we’ll go 2-0 vs Louisville in both sports.

Am I the only one who thinks that Barker needs to shake his d-bag image before being in the discussion to start at QB?
