Yahoo’s mock draft has James going before Julius

The speculation about who will go where in next month’s NBA Draft has revved up considerably since last night, and while we have no clue exactly where Julius Randle and James Young will go, the safe assumption has been that Julius will be picked before James. Not so, according to Yahoo Sports’ Marc Spears. Spears has James going 10th to the Philadelphia 76ers, and Julius going 11th to the Denver Nuggets:

10. Philadelphia 76ers (from New Orleans): James Young, Kentucky, SG, 6-7, 213, Fr. Scout’s take: “No right hand. Owns a sweet stroke from NBA range that is beautiful, effortless and easy. Needs to learn how to come off screens.”

11. Denver Nuggets: Julius Randle, Kentucky, PF, 6-9, 250, Fr. Scout’s take: “If he were to slide, it would be because he’s a high turnover guy who is not the most skilled. He got by in college by bullying for points.”

Whaaaa? Apologies to Spears, but I don’t see Randle slipping all the way to 11th, especially with Orlando, Utah, Boston, and L.A. lined up in the 4-7 spots. Young did well at last week’s Draft Combine, but it’s hard to imagine him going before Julius.

Here’s what the other mock drafts predict:

Draft Express

6. Boston Celtics: Julius Randle
12. Orlando Magic: James Young

Chad Ford Mock Draft 8.0

7. Los Angeles Lakers: Julius Randle
15. Atlanta Hawks: James Young

CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish

6. Boston Celtics: Julius Randle
15. Atlanta Hawks: James Young

CBS Sports’ Zach Harper

5. Utah Jazz: Julius Randle
10. Philadelphia 76ers: James Young

CBS Sports’ Matt Moore

7. Los Angeles Lakers: Julius Randle
12. Orlando Magic: James Young

Just think, only one more month of mock drafts!

James has more upside than Julius. Julius will probably have a very effective career, but there’s a chance that James could be special.

That Yahoo draft is all kinds of messed up:

    Cleveland passing on Wiggins?
The Sixers taking another big after taking Noel last year?
Utah taking Gordon (PF) over Randle?
Beantown taking Vonleh (PF) over Randle?
The Bobcats taking McDermott when they already have a quality starting SF in MKG?
    The Timberwolves taking a center????

No. Just no. No, no, no, no, no.

I agree it’s messed up. However, I could see Cleveland taking Parker due to issues with Wiggins’ effort. Although I don’t think it will happen, it isn’t that crazy of a prediction.
I can’t imagine Philly taking Embiid either. However, crazier things have happened.
I can’t imagine Gordon going ahead of Randle. Although he’s skilled, it’s a huge liability if he can’t improve on his horrid FT shooting.
Boston could take Vonleh over Randle. That’s not that crazy. I wouldn’t, but they could. He showed more signs of being more consistent as a shooter.
The Bobcats are the Bobcats. However, until MKG learns to shoot, they could easily take someone at the SF. Their only locks now are Walker, and Jefferson.
I don’t think the T-Wolves take a center either especially after signing Pekovic last year.

You never know what the Bobcats are going to do. See Zeller. Similarly, Cleveland will somehow mess up their pick and win the lottery again next year.

Should be Mock Draft 6.0 for Chad Ford… Not that these mock drafts mean anything in the grand scheme of things, but what is the point of having 5 versions before the actual lottery?… Hey, let’s mock the lottery, then mock the picks for the mock lottery, and then create a mock draft with the mock picks in the mock lottery.

Randle did bully for points. He bullied through double teams and constantly getting hacked. When he went up against good defensive power forwards who didn’t just hack him, he more than held his own.

I still think he is the second-best in the draft after Parker. Wiggins is really good and Embid is maybe the best, but a huge injury concern (big man with a bad back – those don’t usually get better).

But I’d like to see Randle on the Sixers. I think that team is probably a playoff team by next year and for sure by the year after. So much young talent.

Mock drafts are as important and interesting as they are meaningful and accurate. It’s a bunch of NBA groupies and wannabes trying to read the minds and emotions of each team owner. Good luck with that!

Julius Randle if available will not make it past Boston and LA Lakers. James Young, I wish well but I don’t see him going until mid 1st Round. He is only 6 ft 6 in. His ball handling abilities are suspect. I wish him well but that is not good for a guy his size in the NBA.

      He’s a 6’6 shooting guard, I think that’s pretty nice my man.

In reality if Jabari and Wiggins go 1, 2 in the draft the next best 3 available players are Embiid, Randle, and Exum. With the 76ers having a up and coming pg and Noel as there center logically they should take Randle. Then hopefully they can pull Young in at the 10th pick and they will both end up in Philly where we will have a nice combo of wildcats to cheer for on a young and talented team.

The man speaks the truth. Kentucky rarely has NBA talent, and this year is no exception.

If you can not see that James Young has far greater potential than Randle then you are really inept. Randle is going to be good but Young is going to be special. Yahoo made a very astute observation. The NBA has far stronger and more physically imposing players on every team than in college. Randle will adjust but to think he will be able to bully his way around the NBA is just not smart. The first time, or hundred times, he tries his silly spin move he will have his pocket picked, and he will be sprawled out on the court. Again, he will be a good player, possibly start eventually, but Young has potential to be an All-Star and even more.

Assuming Randle doesn’t improve or develop any more moves in the post? He’s a young guy who will continue improving.

Randle is 6’9 and at LEAST 250. Even at just 19, you think it’s going to be easy for guys to bully him in the paint? Best part for him is that nobody is going to be able to afford to double and triple team Randle like they did in college this year. He’ll still be able to bull his way to the basket one on one against a lot of guys in the league. Dude averaged 15 and 10 a game this year while getting swarmed every play. Your opinion suggests that you aren’t a UK fan at all. Get back to Card Chronicle, or, you know, stealing purses from old ladies or whatever you line beards do in your spare time.

“ridicuous” – the only thing ridiculous is your comment that since the guy has the opinion that James will be a better pro, he isn’t a UK fan at all. you’re the worst type of fan there is, and are a part of the idiot portion of this fanbase that guys like Wilbon talk about all the time. the dude happens to be right by the way, James does have far more potential, and you know nothing about basketball.

I have to agree, Young has more potential, and the NBA draft more than any other takes players based on potential. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him going before Randle, but I still think Randle gets taken in that 5-7 range.

Could be that Julius goes #3 to Orlando and James goes #12 to Orlando. I’d be a Magic fan for sure.

Boston has Sullinger and Olynyk at the 4 and I think it would be highly unlikely they would take Randle with the #6 pick. The Celtics really need a rim protecting center and a shooting guard that can score more efficiently than Avery Bradley, not another PF, especially one whose defense is…questionable.

BULL CRAP. No way Young goes before Randle. Unless there’s a team that wants someone that doesn’t play defense and jacks up 20+ shots per game.
