Yahoo! Sports’ Dan Wetzel went in on Bill Self, and folks, it’s about time. It’s been a rough couple months for Self, who was mentioned throughout the FBI scandal and most recently was shown to have knowledge of the payments to players.
There were text messages and phone calls that indicated Self knew, and then there turned out to be text messages from Self himself. It wasn’t a good look, but here we are on the eve of the 2018-2019 college basketball season and every head coach mentioned in the FBI scandal is still coaching their team sans Rick Pitino. Tough break, Rick.
Plenty of national media members are enamored with Self because he picks up their $22.54 Hooters tabs after Peach Jam every July, but wings be damned, Wetzel isn’t playing any games. He went after Self and criticized the hypocrisy of players sitting out while condemned coaches play dumb and remain coaching.
Do yourself a favor and read the entire article HERE. Wetzel makes a plethora of great points and is the first scathing Self article I’ve seen from a nation writer. If I missed one feel free to let me know.
I hope the NCAA notices what schools are doing with their coaches. Schools are clearly taking the UNC approach with their head coaches and not admitting any wrongdoing while waiting and seeing how things play out around them. Players are too risky though because the NCAA can later comeback and vacate games. Hopefully the NCAA won’t forget that Kansas knew Self was texting with Gassnola and the Jayhawks athletic program did nothing about it.
I understand why players are having to sit out and wait. It’s probably not fair to the players that truly didn’t know they had sleezeballs running their recruitment, but I get it. The Cam Newton defense of not knowing doesn’t work. But Wetzel is right, why are coaches free to roam sidelines and keep going as if nothing happened?
The Jayhawks will have plenty of distractions as the season starts tomorrow. Not great news for the No. 1 team in the country. Shame.
