Kentucky Sports Radio

University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Yahoo! Sports: “If your school produced a first-round pick in the past three years, be worried.”

Last week, Pete Thamel of Yahoo! Sports dropped a bombshell report saying over 50 schools could find themselves in trouble with the NCAA following the major FBI investigation sweeping college basketball.

Tonight, both Thamel and Pat Forde released another report that should terrify the entire nation even further.

According to Yahoo! Sports, the FBI has spreadsheets detailing every single player to receive illegal benefits, how much money they received, and how much they planned to receive. They also reported no school with a first-round pick over the last three years should sleep easy each night.

“There are spreadsheets detailing who got paid, how much they got paid and how much more they were planning to pay,” said a source familiar with the investigation. “The feds got everything they wanted and much more. Don’t think it will only be players who ended up signing with ASM that got paid. Those spreadsheets cast a wide net throughout college basketball. If your school produced a first-round pick in the past three years, be worried.”

In fact, this could impact the current eligibility of NCAA players, including “numerous prominent players in the upcoming NCAA tournament.”

According to the sources, the financial records from Miller and wiretap conversations featuring Dawkins illuminate the blatant nature of deal-making to land top talent well before the players turn professional. Those deals could threaten the current eligibility of players because of NCAA amateurism rules and retroactively put in peril the contests participated in by those players. Sources said this includes numerous prominent players in the upcoming NCAA tournament, the showcase of college basketball. “It’s all there,” said a different source familiar with the investigation.

So when could we start seeing these NCAA violations/announcements come to fruition? Yahoo! reports it could last all the way through 2019 because the case is so massive.

In terms of potential NCAA violations, the information is expected to inevitably trickle out through pretrial motions and the trials themselves. Dates for three trials have been set, some of them not scheduled to begin until 2019. (There’s no certainty all of the collected information will get out, nor will there be any specific timeline when it’s released.)

There were several elite recruits that didn’t sign on the dotted line with former NBA agent Andy Miller, but that doesn’t make you immune from this case. In fact, more players received improper benefits from Miller than the agency actually signed.

So how deep did Miller’s operation go? One source with knowledge of the investigation estimated that ASM Sports was paying more than three times as many prospects, and families of prospects, as clients they signed. The impact on the NCAA landscape is expected to be significant. No one is certain if the federal government is targeting other NBA agents amid the competitive landscape, but it is widely believed within the sport that Miller was far from the only agent operating in this manner.

Uh oh.

Well at least we won’t have to vacate a title since we have not won one in the past 5 years. That is the time frame our guys would have been 1st rounders in the last 3 years. Guess the one and done may be valuable fo that purpose. This does not sound good for the NCAA Basketball dynasty. Sounds like almost all top teams will be involved.

You do of course, you mixed a lot of inaccuracies to create a meaningless post. I am not a fan of the FBI, but I do think they should look into attempts of Russia to undermine our democracy, and you should be too.

And perhaps info from the FBI on basketball is a big deal … maybe not. We don’t know until we see what happens, and that may take years. All of the big names will be gone by then.

And if there is widespread cheating, clean house. If that means UK, so be it … just make sure you get UNCC this time. And Duke has been doing shifty things for years. Clean house.

Burn it all down, it won’t hurt my feelings a bit. I’m tired of schools jumping through hoops for kids who have interest or no business going to school. Tell the NBA to put some money into its developmental league and create a minor league system like professional baseball and hockey. Let’s stop with the loopholes and the tutors and all the extra crap it takes to get these kids eligible. If they want to go pro, then go pro. If they flunk out of high school doing it, then so be it. I’m personally tired of it. If all the tangential businesses that have sprung up and rely upon the whims of 17-year-olds (and getting younger every year) get hurt, then so be it.

I’m still not worried. I don’t think any crimes were necessarily committed. If an agent wants to give some third party money and the kid didn’t get it or know about it and the coach wasn’t involved, how can they do anything. I don’t even think any of the charges will stick in the first place. And lets also not forget it was mainly adidas. No one has said anything about Nike.

    • Smyrna_Cat

If the FBI discovers things that don’t involve crimes, but are against NCAA rules, than the NCAA CAN act. But as UNCC knows, whether they will act depends upon the situation.

If there was ANY truth to this, Bowen would already be NCAA ineligible, along with all the others directly implicated. The day this happened it looked amateur and poorly put together with 2 poster boards and a guy begging for people to turn themselves in. If “everyone” is doing it NO ONE will get in serious trouble, what’s the NCAA going to do, erase the last 5 years of basketball and prove they’re inept?? Nope

    • Smyrna_Cat
      8:33 am February 22, 2018 Permalink

Well, Bowen isn’t playing … and I don’t believe he was cleared to play at UL, and we won’t even be eligible to play at SC until next. So right now, he IS ineligible.

And I will believe this changes the landscape of NCAA basketball when I see it. UNCC cheats much better than UL … that is about it.

The Kentucky model is the only one that takes away any incentive to cheat, if you think about it. Kids just have to wait 9 months and they get a huge payday, so why take anything on the side that could mess that up?

What this may do is cause more major programs to abandon the old, corrupt model and start copying Kentucky’s more honest approach.

True but that doesn’t mean a family member would not take the money. The player might not known anything about it. ..the family member could be the “real student” UNCheating Dean Smiths used in their case. The student athlete did get the $, just Mom…oh well…the school just knows the student athlete didn’t get $ from school so NCAA, shove it.

    • Look Out Fireworks
      9:33 am February 22, 2018 Permalink

What’s it going to mess up for the kid though? It’s not like he will ever have to pay that money back, pay back his scholarship or team related expenses, etc.
Just like the UL players keep saying the championship happened and they still have their rings, even when the rest of us in reality know the 2013 NC game never happened and UL has 2 (yes, two) trophies and banners.

It will only ever hurt the schools and the fans. Even if Thameltoe is correct, he says penalties will be retroactive as the FBI and NCAA move too slow to do anything this year. That hurts the school and the fans, but the players that are good enough first round picks will be making millions by the time the tish hits the fans.

I know more allegations are coming in the pay-for-play scandal. It may just be the hope of a homer, but I don’t feel like this is Calipari’s game at this point and I don’t think UK has much to be worried about. The program sells itself.
