During the NCAA Tournament last season we watched
Santa Willie sit fashionably on the bench nursing his injury as he knew he was done for the season. I can say none of us knew what was next for the crowd favorite player. We were all excited, however, when he made the announcement he planned on returning for another year with the Cats.
Before his injury Willie was making strides to show the world what type of player he is, but I guess he was just getting started (Bro) because this year he has shown skills and an athletic ability that just comes naturally. You can’t teach a person how to play like Willie. It’s a natural talent.
And we have seen that natural talent explode this season and Willie’s draft stock has sky-rocketed to a lottery pick and the season is not even halfway over.
Would you say Willie is the most improved player this year in college basketball? Perhaps.
Although there is still improvement to be made with his offensive game, Willie is one of the top big-men in college. Willie makes a difference on either end of the court and whether is adding quick transition points or blocking another shot he is always there to make a play. Once he plants his feet forget about it. There is no way you are making that shot.
We have seen Willie live up to expectations and then more this season. Kentucky has THE best defense in college basketball this season (an argument could be made it’s the best college basketball has seen in years) and Willie is the forefront of that defense.
To Kentucky fans, the answer is obvious. Willie is the most improved player and with several more games to go, there is nothing but room for Willie to convince the rest of America of the same.
