North Carolina’s star point guard has missed two straight games with a sprained left ankle. A fickle injury, Roy Williams provided little clarity on Joel Berry’s status during today’s press conference.
“I am not optimistic at all,” Williams told Andrew Carter of The Raleigh News & Observer. “But I’m not pessimistic.”
Williams is taking the “wait and see” approach with Berry, but herein lies the problem: Roy has not seen Berry. Today was the Tar Heels’ first practice of the week, receiving a break for finals. “I haven’t seen him,” Williams said. “I have no opinion.”
North Carolina has struggled without their point guard in the lineup. The Tar Heels squeaked past Tennessee with a two-point win on Sunday, and spent much of last Wednesday’s game trailing to Davidson at home. Berry averages 14.8 points, 4.7 assists and 3.8 steals per game this year.
Fellow guard Justin Jackson is the only person providing any clarity, and he believes Berry will be back.“I guess we’ll see how he’s doing,” Jackson said. “He seems like he’s pretty upbeat about playing.”
With all the being said, let’s be honest: Joel Berry is going to play against UK. We won’t know until gametime, but go ahead prepare to see Berry in the starting lineup.
