What they’re saying about Alex Poythress and Dakari Johnson coming back

Alex Poythress and Dakari Johnson made the Big Blue Nation giggle like schoolgirls when they announced they are returning for their junior and sophomore years, respectively. Here’s a sampling of their reactions, starting with Alex Poythress’ decision:

CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish:

The 6-foot-7 forward was considered a likely second-round pick had he entered this draft. Either way, there are now three legitimate NBA prospects at UK — Willie Cauley-Stein, Marcus Lee and Poythress — who have announced they’re returning to school. Meantime, freshmen Julius Randle and James Young have announced they’re leaving for the NBA Draft, which means Kentucky is still waiting on formal decisions from freshmen Andrew Harrison, Aaron Harrison and Dakari Johnson. If the Harrisons return, Kentucky will likely again be ranked No. 1 in all preseason polls.

NBC Sports’ Rob Dauster:

Poythress averaged 5.9 points and 4.5 rebounds as a sophomore, and while he showed flashes of being the kind of electrifying talent that he was expected to be entering the program – particularly during Kentucky’s run to the national title game – Poythress was known more for his inconsistency than anything else this season.

That’s why it was a smart decision for Poythress to return to school. He has all the athleticism that he needs, but he’s still a tweener with a reputation that’s less than flattering.

ESPN’s Jeff Goodman:

Adam Zagoria:

Kentucky sophomore forward Alex Poythress made the wise decision to return to Kentucky for next season, adding to what will surely be a loaded frontcourt and a very deep team.

The 6-foot-7 forward is projected as the No. 42 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft by, and can help his stock with a strong season next year.

The Sporting News’ Mike DeCourcy:

Poythress showed 3-point shooting ability as a freshman but declined a bit at that distance in his second season. He’ll need to improve that to attract NBA interest, but also to hold down a small forward position if that is to become his place with next season’s Wildcats.

…and then there was this tweet, from Tim Sullivan:

Sigh. Was that really necessary, Tim?

Adam Zagoria:

Rob Dauster

Jeff Goodman

Yeah, all of college basketball.

Eamonn Brennan:

A 7-foot center whose combination of size and athletic gifts made him a low-post force in the tournament (especially alongside Julius Randle), Johnson is one of those big men who is both preternaturally athletic and still growing into his body. He has the proverbial “baby fat” scouts love to minimize in their imaginations. Either the NBA now or a year in school (and then the NBA) would have probably worked out equally well for him. A decision to return creates a crowded frontcourt situation for Kentucky, one that should terrify anyone outside Big Blue Nation’s border territories.

Given the experience that we already have, the raw talent we possess, and the sheer weakness of the SEC next year, minutes should not be a problem. We may dominate some games so handily that we would be resting our starting five for 90% of the second half.
My theory for why Cal never seems to break a 7-8 man rotation at UK has been due to lack of overall experience. He’s had to pick his top 6 or 7 and then roll with them just so they can get the experience they need. That will not factor much next year.

Tim Sullivan must not be much of a sportswriter if he’s never heard of Swen Nater,, who never started a college game but was a first round pick 40 years ago, and became a journeyman NBA player.

Kentucky hate is equally proportional to the fear these losers have They criticize UK for one and done and now criticize the players for staying. Next year is going to be a ball (especially if twins return) watching the fear envelop these haters.

Who in the hell is Tim Sullivan? I wish KSR would quit giving free press to all the haters. They know they can say something anti UK and KSR will post it all over the site. Anyways we are going to be loaded to the hub once again next year. Can’t wait for the ride

WCS Towns Dakari Lyles Lee Poy sounds like 2 deep at the 3, 4, and 5. Bring back the twins with incomers Ulis and Booker and we are 2 deep at the 1 and 2 as well. Do you guys think Lee will make for a good 3? He has athletism and Defense but maybe not the skill set to be a wing. Thoughts?

    • Logan
      6:42 pm April 23, 2014 Permalink

Sure Lee has the athleticism, but I think he is going to have to develop at least a mid range jumper (kind of like Young showed in the tournament when he would catch and shoot coming off of off-ball screens) if he’s going to be an effective 3. If tries the moves that he started doing in the tournament, it’s just going to become too crowded with Lyles and Darkari/Wille already down low. I still think Lee will be working a lot on developing a jumper this summer though.

With Towns’ ability to shoot the 3, he could essentially serve as the 3 in some offensive sets while Lee plays the 3 on defense if it’s man-to-man.

Why didn’t Tim Sullivan respond with a similar smart-a$$ remark when Chris Jones announced he was returning for Louisville. Even someone with his limited basketball knowledge should know that Alex is the better NBA prospect of the two. Jones would not have been drafted; Alex would have. Stay classy, Tim.

Sullivan, what a troll. I’d like to see a national survey (or local, for that matter) to see how many people have heard of Alex Poythress vs how many have heard of Tim Sullivan. Poythress is like Chuck Hayes with more athletic ability. Solid player who will make an impact at the next level.

Hey Tim how’s that Courier-Journal springboard working out for you asshat? Here’s hoping if you have kids despite your lack of testicles no one ever publicly takes an unnecessary, classless shot at them like the one you just fired at Alex. It would be bad enough having to call you dad. And since you’re feeling so mouthy maybe next time you can give Poythress your thoughts face to face. Yeah, that’ll happen.
