Wenyen Gabriel not invited to NBA Draft Combine

Earlier this week, Hamidou Diallo’s high school coach said Diallo told him all six Kentucky players who declared for the NBA Draft were invited to the Combine. Turns out that’s not true. Yahoo’s Shams Charania published the combine invite list, and while Diallo, Kevin Knox, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, PJ Washington and Jarred Vanderbilt’s names are listed, Wenyen Gabriel’s is not.

Seventy-three players in all were invited to the combine, and considering Wenyen hasn’t shown up in any mock drafts, the news that he didn’t receive an invitation isn’t surprising. While that alone may be the push Wenyen needs to return to school for another season, he may be prepared to explore other options in the G-League or overseas. Here’s hoping he returns to Lexington.

ICYMI last night, Diallo’s coach also told the Herald Leader that he’s heard Diallo will not participate in the Combine:

Looks like he’s tucking in his chicken wing, trying not to foul.

Also notably absent from the invite list?

    LiAngelo Ball.

Can’t wait for the media to run with that story!

The only thing I can think of is why waste an invite on the clear number 1 pick when you know he’ll decline?

Is Vanderbilt ambulatory enough to participate in the combine? Or is he going to sit and watch like usual?

I know there’s a small portion of the fanbase that complain about Wenyen’s play, but I truly believe he’s on the verge of a breakthrough. We saw glimpses of the type of impact he can have in the SEC tournament. I’m not expecting All-American just the best version of himself. Now if Wenyen will make the decision to come back, then UK will have added valuable experience in the front court.

While I disagree because he has heavy feet, and can’t dribble or pass well, I agree we need some depth at the 4/5. There seems to be a game or two where WG looks great but honestly his best hope is shooting 3’s and hustle. The rest of his game is weak but that doesn’t mean he can’t be a big part of the success

Guess Hami doesn’t want his game exposed any more than it already has been…

Mc12 you say “heavy feet”? Maybe he’s just angry and needs to play with a different mindset. I agree he is under developed, but would blame his athleticism and lack of vertical on not getting the invite.Cal will help him develop that if he stays. Hoping to see it all unfold.

Wenyen has a good shot at becoming the next ‘Worm’. I love the kid. Unheralded, yet quietly valuable.
