Today’s a big day, sports fans. We have real life NBA to watch, more real life MLB to watch, news around basketball and football at UK, and a former Kentucky high school basketball star who may just end up transferring back home to play for the Cats. Plus it’s National Hammock Day! Let’s get right to the fun…
John Calipari really seems to like his new basketball team.
Coach Cal and his staff joined the players on campus on Monday to begin early one-on-one instruction. Interactions have been limited and the whole team hasn’t played together in front of the coaches, but there’s still plenty to be excited about in this new group.
Tuesday evening Calipari tweeted, “Little extra bounce in my step the last two days because I’ve had a chance to work with our guys. Hasn’t been much — just individuals — but getting to see their faces and talk a little basketball has me smiling.
“We’ve got a determined, dedicated and hard-working group. We’ve got a long ways to go obviously but I like this group. Talent and some veterans. [Keion Brooks] is way better and [Davion Mintz] and [Olivier Sarr] have been great.”
Cal had even more to say to Andy Katz on Katz’s podcast:
New (but familiar) name to watch: Adam Kunkel
It’s rare for a transfer in the OVC to make waves around the basketball program in Lexington, but here we are.
Adam Kunkel, formerly of the Cooper High School Jaguars in Union, Kentucky, announced he is entering the transfer portal after two seasons at Belmont. Kunkel was a First Team All-OVC guard in 2019-20, his sophomore season, after averaging 16.5 points per game and shooting 39 percent from three-point range.
Once news of Kunkel’s transfer spread around college basketball, he began hearing from several high-major programs, including the one he grew up rooting for at the University of Kentucky. The staff at UK spent some of Tuesday watching film on Kunkel (he had 35 against Boston College and 16 against Alabama, so hopefully they watched those) after reaching out to discuss a potential transfer.
A 2018 All-State selection in Kentucky, it’s hard to imagine a world where Kunkel will pass up on the Cats if the opportunity presents itself, but he also heard from nearby Cincinnati and Xavier, as well as Kansas, Louisville and others.
The second preseason of the current NBA season begins today!
Down in the Orlando bubble, NBA teams will begin a six-day stretch of scrimmages before the actual season restart a week from tomorrow. All 22 teams in the bubble will play three exhibitions over the next six days, beginning with a televised doubleheader today featuring the Orlando Magic against the LA Clippers at 3 p.m. followed by the New Orleans Pelicans and Brooklyn Nets at 7 p.m. Those two games will air on NBA TV.
Former UK star Bam Adebayo finally made it to Orlando after a positive coronavirus test prior to the team’s departure, but he is unable to participate in any basketball until he passes consecutive tests, so he won’t join the Heat in tonight’s un-televised scrimmage against Sacramento.
Bradley McKee caught up with Jarred Vanderbilt.
Jarred Vanderbilt’s NBA team, the Minnesota Timberwolves, did not get an invite to Orlando, but the former Wildcat accepted an invite to chat with KSR’s own Bradley McKee for the next interview in Bradley’s series of Zoom interviews with former players.
We’ll have it posted online a littler later today.
The MLB’s preseason resumes.
I’m not the guy to provide the most accurate MLB information but a quick Google search tells me there are games all night but only one — the Twins at the Cubs — is televised nationally. 7:05 p.m. on the MLB Network, if you have the MLB Network.
Go Braves. Big comeback last night.

We have bowl predictions for Kentucky!
Bowl predictions aren’t real football, but we’ll take them right now. One website says Music City Bowl, another says Liberty Bowl.
It’s Henderson County Day on KSR.
Henderson County is a special place, known for losing to Madisonville in high school sports and having one of the 11 Taco John’s locations in Kentucky. And Mr. B makes some good pizza and wings. Tune in to KSR at 10 a.m. to hear more about the
