WATCH: John Calipari’s message to the team after the Ohio State loss

What was John Calipari’s message to the team following Saturday’s 71-65 loss to No. 5 Ohio State? See for yourself in UK Sports Video’s behind-the-scenes footage from the locker room.

“Here’s what I will tell you: at least we know, okay, we’ll be fine. We’ve got some other guys that are going to have to compete. Here’s what you’re finding out: it’s hard to play against other teams that are really playing. You can say, ‘Oh, he’s heard to play for.’ No. You’re at Kentucky. Listen to these dudes. Like they won a national title. You know what I would have told you if we won? ‘We lost to Utah. Hurry up, let’s get on the plane and get out of here.’ These dudes are like they won a national title. You don’t get it though. You just want to go out and exchange baskets. So, we’re learning, though. We’re learning. And the way you fought, you gave yourselves a chance.

“Nate coming back, making shots, right? Nate played his ass off. Give him a hand. You, again, no matter how you played, someone came in and played well. You grab them. You tell them, ‘Great.’ Because you played well. And everybody here is going to have opportunities. What you do with them is up to you.”

Unless we can get something out of Nick and EJ, this season is a wash. I don’t get how anyone can be at UK for 3 years and suck as bad as Nick these last two games. Just start all guards, a small forward, and Nate and hope we don’t lose 10+ games.

I have no doubt that Cal is intelligent, but he often struggles to express himself in a clear manner. He speaks in non-sequiturs, i.e., his thoughts seem jumbled together. When I read transcripts of extended interviews with Cal, as often as not, I can’t figure out what he is saying. Players need clear, concise instruction and I wonder if Cal’s rambling thought process confuses them.

Cal’s speaking style does not translate well to written transcripts, but it’s not at all hard to follow what he’s saying otherwise. He has been talking the same way since before he got to UK, so why is that even relevant? It’s not.

We know that Ohio State is a top 5 team for sure. We got nothing from EJ or Nick, Kahlil and still had a chance to win. Like always we will be in the thick of it in the end. Cal is a great coach . What we need is some of are fans are goofy and need to go silent.

Has Cal “figured it out yet” ?

    Just wondering.

Actually, that is a good point. The focus – every year – is when will the team “get it?” Our young teams clearly have to process and respond to their new environment, but I suspect that it takes a while for Cat to get it, too. It typically takes him a couple of months or more to figure out how to use the athletes that he has assembled. It’s like he is getting a new sports car every year, but has to grind around in 3rd gear until he figures out how to get the most from the car.

We’ll be fine. We’re the gold standard.
