WATCH: John Calipari joins College Gameday at the Final Four

Before the National Semifinal games got underway, John Calipari spent a few minutes on the set of ESPN’s College Gameday to talk about his 2017-18 Wildcats.

Still not over the season-ending loss to Kansas State, Calipari admitted the pressure may have gotten to his young team.  “Maybe it was because of what they (Kansas State) did…but we had the plays to win the game and had our chances.”

Even though the season ended earlier than he anticipated, Calipari said, “This team, I tell you, it was the most rewarding year I’ve had.”

On an unrelated note, the man in the middle of the screen does not look like the man pictured in the graphic on the top-right corner of the screen.

I give Cal props for not going after Seth Greenberg. It was shameful, and extremely unprofessional, the way he completely disrespected UK and this year’s young team, kicking them when they were down. You never heard sh*t from him, when they were getting it together late in the year, finishing 9-2…while Virginia’s Jr/Sr-laden team that he opined should be getting attention, rather than UK’s “entitled” freshman, got bounced by a 16-seed as the #1 overall seed. Nope, didn’t hear jack-squat from him then, did we?

Not making excuses for our final loss, but Luckie calls games in a distinctive way. Stats show when he is on the whistle, there can be an extraordinary amount of fouls called, shooters can have trouble getting into a flow and there are more turnovers than usual. (2010 vs WVU and 2018 vs SC were similar to the KState game). He seeks to mirror calls on both ends of the floor. He is prone to call technicals on well known coaches. Just wish players didn’t have an added obstacle when they’re used to playing one way during the year, to have to adjust to a different type of whistle on a very big stage.

Proud of this team and Coach Cal! Go ‘Cats! Go Big Blue!

Win or lose, that was easily one of the worst-officiated games I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching, in 40+ years. Pretty much from tip-off to the final horn, it was the most disruptive I’ve ever seen an officiating crew through the entirety of a game, on BOTH ends of the floor. If that game had gone to OT, the finish would have been worse than the Bama-Minn game back late last year….probably with BOTH teams finishing with less than 5 players.

Sheli the whistles could not disrupt our shooters, we did not have any good shooters. This blame the refs for every loss is getting old. Facst are this team was was too young and not talented enough and from a bad conference that did not help us get better. People say we finished 9-2, yeah look what we beat, outside of UT all the teams were non tourney or bubble teams and we still struggled to win them. Vandy was horrible and we struggled, Mizzou we lose. SEC was blown out of Tourney, 4 teams out while losing by 20 plus. If we ship these guys out and bring in 5 more we can look forward to same thing next year except an earlier exit unless we get a lucky bracket like this year that gifted us a sweet 16. I know we are fans {fanatics} but join the real world once in a while.

51 fouls called…FIFTY-ONE!! There is no way to get in ANY kind of rhythm during a game like that. Even a veteran team struggles in those type of games, let alone an incredibly young team that started pressing late in the game…
Let the kids play unless it is an obvious foul! The Loyola-Chicago/Kansas State game was just as physical and there were only 34 fouls called! I am not making excuses, for we did not play well enough to win. But I still would have liked to watch them play anything that resembled an actual basketball game and see what happened.

Nova reminding me of the UK teams from the mid-late 90’s. Fast tempo with everyone a threat from the outside! Great spacing and opens up the court with the defense having to stay out on shooters EVERYWHERE. Delk, Walker, McCarty Anderson, Mercer, Sheppard, Pope, etc in 96. Mills, Sheppard, Turner, Evans, Padgett, in 98. Always 4 shooters with one true big! So much fun

Wright going to 2 of the last 3 championship games is the definition of fact. Wright has been far and away better than Cal during that span. Wright builds teams with four-year guys. As much as fans hate to admit, Cal got his elusive title due to striking gold with Davis.

Wright is a good coach but what has he done before this short stretch? Since Hank is not smart enough to do his own research I thought I would help him out. So Hank how patient would all you banner counters be with a coach with a record like this? You and all the other would be crying “the sky is falling” and would be calling for his firing or retiring. So again Hank you’re an idiot.

You cannot tell me that Cal has been better than Wright the last several seasons. That’s the point I am trying to make. And at the end of the day, banners are the goal. Cal has even admitted as much, stating how little he cares for the conference tourneys and that he would rather focus on the NCAA tourney. And thanks for that little insult thrown in at the end, it’s a nice touch. Doesn’t make our fanbase look crazy at all.

    • bigbluehank
      12:37 pm April 1, 2018 Permalink

That’s exactly what I’m saying. What don’t you understand? During the last 3 seasons, including this season, Cal has gone 2nd Round, Elite 8, Sweet 16. Wright has gone Champion, 2nd Round, Championship Game. Which record would you rather have? Wright has out-performed Cal during this span. Perhaps I’m just not making my point properly.

    • 4everUKblue
      12:52 pm April 1, 2018 Permalink

Why don’t you get what I’m saying? You are jumping on the Jay Wright bandwagon when the last 3 seasons is all he has to brag about. Compare the two coaching records and tell me which you’d rather have, 2 good seasons or 6 good seasons. You don’t get to pick a season here and a season there. Why is this so hard for you? I’m sure you would have been just fine with Jay Wright during all those years of poor results. Oh that’s right you just want to look at the last 3, one of which was not good. You keep making yourself look uneducated Hank.

    • bigbluehank
      1:02 pm April 1, 2018 Permalink

Cal’s results have declined the last three seasons. Wright’s have improved. Based on each trajectory, would it not make sense to go with the latter? 3 years is not really an anomaly.

      12:55 pm April 1, 2018 Permalink

So Cal is in his 9th season and Jay has out performed Cal 2 of those 9 yrs and you want Jay Wright? That’s what you’re saying Hank. You do realize what you’re saying now right?

    • 4everUKblue
      1:37 pm April 1, 2018 Permalink

Again Hank….only 2 of the 3 years have been good to a banner counter like yourself and that’s only if they beat Michigan and I think they will. Assuming they do win the NC this year, that would be 2 successful seasons to a banner counter. What will you say about Wright if he does not win this year?

  10. Cletis75

Wright has definitely looked good lately, but let’s not act like he hasn’t underachieved at times. He has failed to make it past the 1st weekend with a number 1 seed before. His national championship was won on a 30 ft jumper, so let’s not act like he hasn’t been a little lucky himself. It has taken him nearly 20 years to build that success.

I found it interesting that the ‘Nova team had zero tattoos displayed. I also liked when they interviewed the player from ‘Nova, after the game, he was extremely focused on his team mates, and “Villinova Basketball”, and not “my game” or “me”.
We don’t see that as much anymore.
Both teams are supposedly without the “one and dones” in the championship.
One player, for Michigan, in the championship game, is a UK transfer.
Pretty interesting to see if Cal can become innovative enough to get back to playing past the sweet 16. I am hoping he does.

I have been and will continue to be an adamant UK fan, regardless of the levels of success. Just because I’m no longer a huge Cal fan doesn’t make me a bandwagon fan; it just means I’d rather see somebody else in charge. Most coaches exhibit “bandwagon” qualities themselves, as evidenced when they leave a school for a better offer elsewhere.

    • 4everUKblue
      12:47 pm April 1, 2018 Permalink

You misunderstood me Hank, I’m saying you’re a Jay Wright bandwagon fan. Jumping on after the NC, you’re obviously only looking at the last 3 seasons of which 2 have been very successful, but you choose to ignore the seasons that came before that. That is a bandwagon fan, I suppose if Wright loses in the sweet 16 next season you will jump back off his bandwagon. A coach taking a better offer at a better program is no different than you or I changes jobs for a better situation and pay, last I checked fans don’t get paid for jumping on or off a bandwagon. You see being a fan is not a job for most of us.

    • bigbluehank
      1:10 pm April 1, 2018 Permalink

I’m not just a Wright fan because of the last three seasons. I like his demeanor. I like the way he recruits and builds teams. I like the way his teams play, as well as their style of offense. I like that he doesn’t make excuses and doesn’t have to give the “we’re the youngest team in the nation” spiel. I like that he is concerned with his team’s success rather than making sure a player gets enough clock in order to make a good impression on NBA scouts. If you think that makes a bandwagon fan you may want to take another look at the definition of “bandwagon”.

    • 4everUKblue

I like this year’s Nova team too and the year before last, but I can’t say he is better than Cal based on 2 seasons. Have you kept up with his teams all these years or just the last 3, two of which have been very successful. Can you see into the future on this one too and say he will continue to succeed at this level? You say Cal will never win another title so you must be able to see what’s in store for Wright too. This Nova team is very good but that does not make me want to ditch my coach and I fee sorry for you because Cal will only leave when he is ready. So you’re going to have to deal with it and all your crying is not going to help anything. And if potential recruits were to read this site, it would surely make them wonder if our fanbase was loyal to the coach and players.

I’m not proposing to dump Calipari, but I will say that maybe the one-and-done strategy has outlived its day. The best teams this year, with the possible exception of Duke, were veteran teams. Villanova, by far the best team this year, is an example of the extreme opposite of one-and-done; six of their top eight players are redshirts. The teams that have done well in the tournament this year, both favorites and winning underdogs, are good-shooting teams. You only have to watch a few minutes of a McD all-star game to see that none of the “top” high-schoolers can shoot worth a d***.

It’s ironic that your name begins with “rock”, because it appears you’ve been living under one.

1.) Virginia had a”veteran team”, was ranked #1 most of the year, and lost to a 16-seed by 20 pts….and they were the #1 overall seed as well.

2.) We’re only 3 seasons removed from the 38-1 season that was largely on the backs of young, former “McD all-stars”, who….last I checked…were some damn good shooters. Go ahead, tell us the Harrison twins, Booker, Towns, Lyles, and Ulis couldn’t “shoot worth a d*** “.

3.)Lastly, between the FBI scandal, the NCAA’s ineptitude, and the ongoing changes in the NBA…and the G-League…it’s inevitable that the 1&D era is about to end anyway. Look at what happened to Syracuse recently ; a signed, top-10, McD’s A-A, dumped Syracuse and jumped straight to the G-League. That’s likely to become a trend, with all of the uncertainty and chaos surrounding the NCAA.

Fire Chokeipari this instant! We need Jay Wright who now has 2 titles! Cal should have 4 titles now but he can’t coach, just recruit!

Thanks henderblue, I didn’t think so. I feel like I need to start with the ABC’s with Hank.

I fail to understand why ANYONE would get into a pissing contest with this bigbluehank guy. The guy is obviously a bandwagon type of guy and no matter how much evidence you provide to prove over the same period of time Cal has BY FAR the better performance, he’ll stick with the bandwagon approach and feel good about himself. Let the guy post this nonsense, make no replies to him, and eventually he’ll go back to the rock he came out from under. Oh, and this is purely an advice post, not a reply to Mr. Bandwagon.
