Dan Issel may hold the all-time scoring record at Kentucky, but he does not have an NCAA Championship ring. That was the message Issel delivered to the current Cats when he stopped by practice this afternoon.

“Cal just said I’ve done everything. I graduated in 1970. Look up there. Do you see a championship in 1970? So, I didn’t do it all. And you guys have a great opportunity to do it all. I watch every game, come to some. You’re getting better every game but as you know, it just takes a lot of hard work.”

Great words from one of the greatest.

Gotta love Big Dan. He, Mike Pratt, Mike Casey and others were what made me a Big Blue fan back then.

That was a great team, for sure. If Casey hadn’t broken his leg right before his senior season, and if Greg Starrick hadn’t transferred, UK would have had a shot at the championship. As it was, they were very close, losing only due to a dirty play by Vaughn Wedeking.

Am I wrong, but the number one scorer for UK basketball is Valerie Still?

Dan the man. What a great player at UK…
