UK looks totally out of sync in 85-67 loss to LSU

It says a lot about UK’s performance tonight that even when the game was technically within reach, it really wasn’t. The Cats turned in one of their worst performances of the season in Baton Rouge, losing to LSU 85-67.

Where do you start? Marcus Lee, Skal Labissiere, and Isaac Humphries all got into foul trouble early, leaving UK with few options inside. The rest of the team wasn’t much better, shooting a paltry 32% from the floor in the first half. Jamal Murray tried to keep it close in the second, scoring 17 second half points, but it wasn’t enough, and that’s with Ben Simmons only scoring 14 points.

Anthony Davis’ reaction says it all:

More coming all night…

Worst game in the Calipari era. Period.
No heart. Worst shooting team in UK history.
Honestly, I could care less if they win another game.
    Unlikeable.
    Uninspiring.
    Utterly Unwatchable Kentucky team.

Played terrible….2011 team absolutely terribly on the road as well. But….maybe time to tell Briscoe to stop shooting threes….Skal is not a center…he will never be a center….either play Humphries behind Lee or Wynyard. Anyway….Cal will figure it out.

Sadly it was not the worst game, Cal is not a great coach he is a great recruiter and great for the community. He lives off recruiting NBA players, when he makes mistakes in judging that talent team is average to horrible. Was same thing the NIT year, with a loss to Bobby Morris. Most of the time he gets it right and has a top team because of the talent, many coaches would have won the title last year with the team UK had, just no coaches could get that type of team put together. Just honest, did not like the hire but have changed my mind on that since he is so good for the community. I could care less how many players we have in the NBA, I want titles but Cal wants it the other way and sacrifices UK and the fans for that. Not saying it is horrible as the schools do make tons off these kids but as a fan I want titles.

Everybody will figure it out. This team was ranked based on the UK logo on the jersey. Nothing else there really. When your toughest player is 5’9″ on tiptoes and your best athlete is softer than a roll of Charmin you aren’t going to accomplish much.

WeareBBN every fan wants titles and granted I don’t like some of Cal’s methods either but do we really wanna give up a man who has given us 4 final four in five years. Quick, tell me who would we get as a replacement who could equal that or bring us more championships, who??? We’ve gotten spoiled because we’ve been at the top so all we can find to complain about is we should have had more NC’s. I wish we would have gotten 9 and 10 but I’m not willing to get rid of a coach because of that and the fact he’s gotten us 4 final fours in 5 years. We fire Calipari and we’d be the laughingstock of college bball and known as the fans who can never be pleased short of a NC every year. Be a little reasonable and be happy with what we got. Maybe you want back BCG or Tubby’s one final four in almost 10 years, or Pitino’s 1 NC and 2.FF’s in 8 seasons, Joe B. Hall’s 1 NC in 13 seasons? Compare that to Cal’s 4 FF’s in 6 seasons!

Don’t expect it to get better, where will the offense come from? Team totally unprepared and not capable, great job Cal. Team has way more liabilities on offense in Lee, Poy, Skal and Briscoe. Lee and Poy can only finish off put backs or assist/lobs so Ulis and Murray have all the pressure to put up points. If Lee, Skal and Poy get ball in the post usually bad things happen. Briscoe can drive but is not finishing and if fouled is a give away, still feel he has value for his defense. How is nobody working on changing his shot??? HOW? Skal comes in and we get worse, he is too weak to do anything on either end. Poy is almost as lost now as he has been his entire career, sure he will have a great game every 10 games so everyone will think the switch is on, he could be here 20 years he will just never “get it”. Just being brutally honest folks, love UK, bleed blue but am also a realist and this is what I have seen so far this year. Right now only offense is Ulis and Murray. As a team we seem to have no clue what to do on offense.

Worst part to me is our experienced “leaders” did not show up at all, I am talking about Poythress and Lee. At least Marcus had some fire, Alex shouldn’t have even made the trip. He had the deer in the headlights look all night long and looked lost. Very disappointing for a senior. Tyler, Murray,Mulder, Willis, Briscoe were just about the only ones with any effort with Tyler well above everyone. If every player on our team played with his effort and heart we wouldn’t get embarrassed like this and Ohio St. pissed at Alex the most, he didn’t even look interested in being in the game! Played lazy.

I could not agree more. Once Poy kept making mistake after mistake, Cal should have sat him down. I know Im not the coach but common sense tells me that Poy hurt us early tonight & becuase of that the teams confidence was gone for the whole game. I honestly would have sat Poy down once I seen him look lost after the first half. I know he is a senior but he sure played like a lost freshman.

Biggesf problem with poythress comes down to who do you put in after he has a bad game…humphries? We have no idea what wynyard has. All of our big men play soft if not for lobs. We foul out because of cheap and bad fundamental basketball. We just dont have a big man that can’t foul right now. And with our team as it stands someone has teach them to keep their hands up and let them take the tough shot. Stop taking the head fake. Thats rookie ball.

Bye bye top 25 ranking. This team will be lucky to make the tourney and finish .500 in the SEC.
Most over-ranked and disappointing UK team since the last overhyped and underwhelming Calipari team from couple of years ago.

Alex only plays great when he’s the 6th or 7th option he’s weak minded on the court. It doesn’t matter how good ulis/murray are if you’re bigs can’t rebound and you’re other 5 star guard can’t put the ball in the ocean you’re not going to win a title. expect a blowout at allen field house on the 30th.

Do you not have anywhere else to post the funny gifs and cartoons that were the majority of the blog, plus only a select few could ever get their comments posted. Anyway, who cares? Can’t believe that’s what you post about after this game.

When teams contain Ulis like this, Cal has to make someone else run point until D changes. Ucla-Lsu, both “boxed” Ulis in on offense causing great confusion which in return causes Briscoe to drive in each time forcing missed foul shots. There has to be adjustments when teams force our best point man out of the game. And someyhing is still bothering me, we go for every pump fake; even on the 3 pt line we fall for fakes. Along with that, we still can’t gaurd the pick N roll nor box out. I love our Cars, its frustrating seeing them make fudamental mistakes over and overall. We will recover I believe.. Go Cats!

Ok….tonight sucked…but pump the brakes a bit. This is January 5th. Its not the end of the season. I have never really thought this team would be a juggernaut, and the tourney is typically dominated by guards, and we have Ulis and Murray. Tough night for sure.

This is starting to look a lot like the nerlens team. Skal may as well be a non issue as nerlens was injured for the season. Have a guard in briscoe that loves being fouled and cant make a free throw to save his life. I hoped we would never have a team like that again but this is the one and done lifestyle. Some are great but only if they can or want to play together. I expected a loss but an 18 point loss? This may turn into a very long season. Come on cats get angry and hungry. No resting on the laurels of teams past. Man up boys!

We are going through this Coach Cal complex again, last year it was the twins and this year it is Isiah Briscoe. EASILY the worst shooting starting guard UK has had in years. Yet, he doesn’t care he just keeps shooting and bricking. Gets to the line and can’t even make free throws. So why does he get all these minutes? That and he has nothing inside, he needs a big that can BOTH score and rebound. You know something like a KARL TOWNS. They got pushed around today AGAIN, just like they did at UCLA and Ohio state. They need to give Tai Wynyrd a chance, I thought he could have helped them tonight, we they other bigs getting pushed around and in foul trouble.

They looked terrible tonight, but jesus some of you are overreacting. I should go back and find some comments during the 2013-2014 season or the 2010-2011 season. This team is extremely inconsistent, but when they play hard and are on they look like a legitimate final four team (look at Duke tape and first half vs Ole Miss as examples). The issue is that this team doesn’t get any consistent play out of anyone, especially the bigs. We’ve looked great a few times but have looked mediocre more often. If we can somehow get consistent production out our bigs, even if it takes a miracle, we could easily be a possible final four team. If we don’t, then we most likely won’t make it past the sweet sixteen.

I will never understand how a D1 scholarship guard shoots 35% from the the free throw line. ALL YOU DO IS PLAY BASKETBALL.

    • cats42301
      12:07 am January 6, 2016 Permalink

I agree with you there. As a short guy who knew the only way I’d play in HS was to get great at shooting, it pisses me off greatly when you see guys like Briscoe who get bball scholarships and can’t shoot the ball worth a crap! It just tells me that even though they may have talent, they worked more on how awesome they could be dunking the ball and showing off than they worked on the basics like free throw shooting and I just find that lazy! There is no reason a college player shouldn’t be proficient in fre throws unless he just doesn’t care and doesn’t practice because free throws don’t get you on sports center plays of the day.

The guards are not the problem. The problem lies in the “bigs”. Skal was supposed to be a first team all SEC caliber player and is playing like one of the worst bigs in the SEC. This team will not be consistent until he is good. It is not going to come from Poythress, he has proven he can’t do it. Lee does what he does, plays d and gives high energy, but he cannot be depended on to score. Skal is the missing link to this team.

52% free throw shooting tonight…52% FREE THROW SHOOTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Unbelievable.

These guys can hit 30 footers, make acrobatic spin moves and soar above the rim for dunks. (Well most teams…I don’t know about this one…LOL)

And they can’t make a simple free throw looking completely helpless and buffoonish.

And for the person who made a comment about Cal being fired, you have lost your mind. Yes we as Kentucky fans expect a national title every year. It doesn’t happen and won’t happen. What more do we want from Coach Cal. Four final fours in six years, a national title. Program is back in national prominence where it should be. Coach Cal is the only one for Kentucky. No one else does what he does. For you fairweather fans shut up and appreciate what we have every year at Kentucky. Go Big Blue, Go Coach Cal…

The problem is easy… cal is not a coach, the dribble drive offense is awful. We run no screens for jamal. He is one of the best shooters in college and cal doesnt know how to use him. Everything he hits he has to creat. Any other team you watch runs screens for there guards. To me cal cant devecant his palyers. Poy is no better now than he was as a freshan. If cal would chang the offense for this team and get the guards some open shots it would open the paint up alot. Every team knows ky is going to drive the ball so there just hanging out in the post, were not even giving out post guys a chance. Love cal but he has to learn when the dribble drive will work and when he needs to change it up.
