UK in contact with Blackshear Jr. about grad transfer spot

Kerry Blackshear Jr. is a name to watch in the coming days. The former Virginia Tech big man announced he will leave Blacksburg as a graduate transfer for his final year of college basketball next season. Soon after he shared the news, ESPN ranked him as its top transfer on the market this spring.

Blackshear will probably take a glance at Kentucky as a potential landing spot, and it’s easy to think John Calipari will entertain the idea of adding him as another weapon inside. In fact, a source told KSR the two sides have already been in contact with one another about bringing Blackshear in as a grad transfer next season.

If the name Kerry Blackshear Jr. sounds familiar, it is because we have already seen him in Rupp Arena once before. He started for Virginia Tech when the Hokies gave Kentucky all it could handle in December of the 2017-18 season. Blackshear went for 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting with five rebounds in the 86-93 loss to the Cats.

Maybe we will see more of him in Rupp Arena in 2019-20?

Before you get too excited, you should know he also entered his name in the NBA Draft. He is considering all options for the next step in his basketball career.

Thanks for the info Drew. Know it may be a long shot but this would be awesome. His game would mesh well with our other bigs, as he has both the ability to shoot the three and bang down low.

For the reasons you said I don’t think it’s a long shot. We are not getting the “best of the best” in recruiting as of late although Maxey, Whitney, and Brooks are studs we need another big man or two.

Seriously! Everytime I saw this kid play, I would think “Man I wish he was at Kentucky, he’s a beast!” He put up 18 points with 15 rebounds against Duke in the Tourny. His experience would be awesome.

I have a coworker (Louisville fan) that called this today. It would be great to throw Hagans, Maxey, Whitney, Brooks and Blackshear out there. Whose spot does Keldon take? CATS

Brooks isn’t signed yet. Would Blackshear change that commitment?

I don’t think so Cal sold brooks on a Kevin Knox type of role where he plays the 2-4 and brooks prefers to play on the perimeter whereas you play Blackshear inside

Nah, Blackshear cuts into Nick/EJs minutes in theory. Ccat hit it on the head.

Yep – he’d start. His inside game is more developed than anyone we have left. Hope we get him.

UK wouldnt be in contact if they didnt want him. Cal wants him bc he put up solid numbers against elite competition. Amd we dont have a solid 5 presences yet

Lets face it Nick and EJ are both soft while Blackshear is anything but soft. We need this guy if he doesn’t stay in the draft.

I think the jury is still out on EJ. Think part of his issue was adjusting to a role where he wasn’t a focus on offense. Another off-season to build up his body and refine his defense in Cal’s scheme will do wonders. Nick… well he certainly isn’t a hard player.

Hard to see this happening but would be awesome if it did. I don’t see how Nick Richards would get much playing time if it did happen though.

Having more than 3 players at the 4 and 5 spots is needed. Only having 15 fouls at those spots is insanely thin. Think about last year. Our power was in our smaller starters, but our shot blockers off the bench were monsters.

If he comes, he and EJ start with Sestina and NiCk off the bench. Sooooo much experience!.

If he doesn’t stay in the draft then this makes perfect sense for him. Buzz Williams left… the team is losing two senior starters who averaged double figures… The prospects of a title contending team are notsogood in Blacksburg, however – In Lexington things are a little different!!

Name a coach with a better track record of developing big men for the NBA than KP (and Cal). U think these guys don’t know this? They get their info from blogs? Their future agents hv been waiting in the wings for years biding their time and their patience is only rewarded if their guy gets a contract in the league. There will be chirping in his ear from people who actually know basketball and if u do, u know the path to the NBA for a big man runs through Lexington. Ask Bolden.

Who was the guy in Virginia Techs team that was related to a player from UK last year? I remember the story but can’t think of who it was

I believe you’re thinking of Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who was SGA’s cousin.
