John Calipari called in to Kentucky Sports Radio this morning to wish Matt a happy birthday, and stuck around for a segment to talk about his new players, who are now all on campus and enrolled as UK students. It’s the first time he’s really been able to talk about the freshmen since signing day, so our ears were definitely perked. Here are a few highlights:
— Cal said he’s looking forward to “getting the taste out of our mouths” from last season, and that this squad has “talent, great size, athleticism,” and can shoot better than the 2010 team.
— Also, Cal may be the only person in the world to say that “Hey Soul Sister” is a better song than “Into the Mystic.”
— How about the Harrison Twins? Cal said that Andrew is “really good,” with a “great feel for the game and skill set.” As for both twins, he said that he sat down with them and their parents to form a “great plan for how we’re attacking their personal growth to get them to that next step, that next level of what they can be. If they’re the best version of themselves, it’s scary. They’ve got great size, skills, and should be great defenders.”
— That’s great, but he saved the best quotes for Julius Randle, who he called an “alpha beast.” How good is Julius Randle? “Scary. Really scary.” Cal compared Randle to Michael Kidd-Gilchrist in how he takes practices to the next level and has that killer instinct:
“There are guys that have a deer-in-the-headlights look, and there are others that squint their eyes like ‘I’m gonna rip your throat out.’ He’s one of them.”
Yeah…the season can start right now, please.
Check out Cal’s full segment, which comes near the end of hour two. It’ll be the best thing you do today.
