What’s the national media saying about Kentucky vs. Kansas State? Here’s a roundup of their Sweet 16 picks.
All seven of CBS Sports’ college basketball writers picked Kentucky to beat Kansas State; in fact, Matt Norlander was the only one NOT to pick Kentucky to advance to the Final Four. He has the Cats getting upset by Loyola in the Elite Eight.
If Wade plays at 100 percent, I like Kentucky here. If Wade doesn’t play or is limited, I love Kentucky. I just think the Blue Wildcats are bigger, more athletic and more talented than Kansas State at every position, and that’s not good. Even if they guard Kentucky well, they are going to get killed on the defensive glass.
The Final Four will be Kentucky, Michigan, Villanova and Duke
Going into the NCAA tournament, we went with Virginia, Michigan, Villanova and Duke. Yeah, that’s not going to happen. But Villanova and Duke have looked better than advertised through one weekend. Michigan’s offense has gone MIA, but its defense has been good enough to help the Wolverines get through the shooting slump. Kentucky has gone from a 5-seed in a tough region to the highest seed left in the South. The Wildcats are rolling right now and will have too much for any of their remaining opponents.
Kentucky over Kansas State. We don’t know for certain if Jarred Vanderbilt will play for Kentucky, or Dean Wade for K-State. We know which team is better and more talented, either way.
With all due respect to Kansas State, everything is coming up Kentucky in the South Region. One week ago at this time, it looked like Kentucky would need to beat Arizona and potential No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton just to get to this point. Thanks to Buffalo, that was not the case. Then, it appeared they’d have to get through ACC champ and No. 1 overall seed Virginia to advance to the Elite Eight. UMBC’s historic upset removed that hurdle, as well. Now, John Calipari and his Wildcats need to beat Kansas State and one of Loyola-Chicago or Nevada to march on to San Antonio, and while no game is guaranteed, it seems like a much easier task than what they were looking at seven days ago. Kansas State will likely get Dean Wade back on Thursday, but needs him at or at least near his best to have a chance to upset Kentucky. The fifth-seeded Wildcats are playing their best basketball of the season, winning nine of their last 10 games, while finding a ceiling on offense that eluded them for most of the season. If one game on Thursday is a blowout, it will be this one.
Kentucky 80, Kansas State 67
Jeff Eisenberg: Kentucky over Nevada; Gonzaga over Michigan; Duke over Kansas; Villanova over Texas Tech. Duke over Gonzaga.
Henry Bushnell: Kentucky over Loyola; Gonzaga over Texas A&M; Villanova over Texas Tech; Duke over Kansas. Villanova over Gonzaga.
Zach Pereles: Nevada over Kentucky; Michigan over Florida State; Duke over Kansas; Villanova over Purdue. Villanova over Michigan.
