UK Athletics urges Big Blue Nation to fight racism and bigotry

UK Athletics has released a statement on the recent and continued racial injustices going on throughout the United States.

After the recent killings George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, among countless others, UK Athletics urged the Big Blue Nation to stand against racism and bigotry.

“Our student-athletes inspire. They uplift. They lead,” the statement read. “Even in the midst of a time of great pain, especially for our black student-athletes, they are doing it again. Faced with yet more reminders of the presence of racism and bigotry in this country after the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and too many others, they are speaking out. They will not do it alone.

“We call on the Big Blue Nation to join us: listen, hear, empathize, act, support our black student-athletes, just as you do when they represent us in competition.”

Not long after, UK Athletics, both Kentucky basketball accounts, and the UK football account were among the sports to take part in #BlackOutTuesday, a social media movement supporting the protests against police brutality and equality as a whole.

UK head coach John Calipari also released numerous statements on the matter, including a two-minute video showing heartfelt support for those affected by racial injustice and calling to end racism.

We must demilitarize police. They are escalating the same violence they initiated.

The actions of some cops is not the true picture of all cops. The media just shows the bad things to divide us… there are a heck of a lot more good cops then the few bad ones… No excuse for what happened in Minnesota but that is being made as the status quo and it is not… Just like the media doing their very best to show all the looting and violence and that has overshadowed the ones who are there to actually protest and have open dialogue to bring about change…

That was very well put. Thank you. This country is insane right now and until we join together to fight the real enemy, that enemy wins. Or masters live what is happening in this country right now, take all the focus away from them and puts us against each other.

I can’t wait till November. Our fearless leader didn’t start this problem as has existed for many generations, but he has helped to deeply intensify. Neither myself, nor millions of other Americans will bow down to his bullying, aggressive, and tactics of spreading fear. Agree that most police officers are good, but the bad ones need to be called out, fired, and held legally responsible where applicable. Total transparency is needed in these issues – don’t want to hear cost too much money as unacceptable excuse.

What those 4 police officers did in Minnesota, was nothing but murder, plain and simple. The media in this country is the real enemy of the people. 2016 when all this started police killed 783 Americans, 47% were white Americans, 24% were black Americans and 16% were Latinos. Also that year, police killed 20 unarmed Americans with 20 being white, 16 black and 6 Latino. You can name most if not ALL of those 16 unarmed black Americans killed but how many of those 20 unarmed white Americans killed can you name? You can’t !!
Harvard professor Roland Fryer, a black American released a study in 2016 stating that his finding ” is an inconvenient truth the the NFL and the black community as a whole. The one statistic often left out of the conversation is the number of police killed every year. Out of an estimated 900,000 full time federal, state and local officers 124 lost their lives in the line of duty to only 6% of the country’s population, black males which comprise 40% of all cop killers.
Even though the media refuse to report it, police kill almost twice as many white Americans a years then they do black Americans…..https://www.statista.com/statistics/585152/people-shot-to-death-by-us-police-by-race/
My wife is African American and even she says the one sided media slant has to top before is destroys this country to the point of no return.

Why do people spew these stats to minimize the terrible racism black Americans deal with on a daily basis?

Did you have to train your son how to stay alive during a traffic stop?

Do you have to lie flat on the ground on command or be choked to death?

The media is shining a light on the abhorant behavior of the police which has stolen way too many lives, black, brown AND white.

crazycatfan don’t come on here with facts to back up any logic. It just doesn’t fit the ‘narrative. Facts are optional here and it will insult the intelligence’ level of most posters.
Another perfect example. The videos have now been released from the restaurant owner shot in Loserville and he fired at the cops out his door FIRST! Can’t have that all over national media; doesn’t fit the ‘narrative’. Oh, they recovered SEVEN other hand guns and a shotgun from inside the store. Man ALL of these cops are racist!
BTW, I agree 100% with your wife’s correct in her analysis.

Fighting racism and bigotry coming from UK whose men’s basketball coach openly supports Black Lives Matter…. The same group who terrorizes anyone who doesn’t march with them and yell racial slurs and insults at anyone who doesn’t do what they say. I’ve experienced this first hand. My children are scarred. We were in VA beach celebrating a wedding with an active Army member, who is black, and a white woman. Didn’t matter to the terrorists. They chased the party into a restaraunt, Nautilus to be exact, and terrorized everyone present. Way to stand up against bigotry UK and Cal!

I don’t know anyone that isn’t against racism. But, you can’t talk about this subject and not also add that it is just as wrong to loot, steal, assault people and set businesses and cars on fire. None of the folks associated with UK or any of the professional sports teams seem to include that in their statements. It is infuriating and really seems like they are ok with this criminal behavior. The bad cop was quickly charged with murder and will pay the price, as he should. But that horrific murder has escalated into more innocent people getting killed and 10’s of thousands of illegal activities. It is immoral for these same coaches and athletes not to condemn these acts of violence, as well.

The lack of condemnation of the criminal acts in the aftermath of the horrific murder has really made me question my continued support of the sports programs. The coaches and players seem to condone these acts. It is really sad.

Unfortunately everything is now political. You can’t escape it in sports no more than you can by reading the front page of the newspaper. Everyone has to fall in line and make a politically correct statement about protestors, they are peaceful, we support them, etc. etc. Why do so few lack the moral courage to state the obvious, that there is no justification whatsoever for the rioting and looting. If you want to believe that America is a racist country, immoral since it’s founding, you are free to do do. But regardless of your beliefs on the state of race relations, there is no rational way to justify what we have seen in the last week. For anyone to justify it as a natural and therapeutic reaction to the death of Floyd is utter nonsense. This is not about a death at the hand of police. This is anarchy. Those who are anti-police and think all cops are bad, you are getting a front two seat what it looks like when there is no rule of law and no police to come save the day. You asked for it and you got it. Is this really honoring anyone’s memory? Is it making society better? There is an obvious answer, but most are afraid to say so.

I agree that political correctness is crazy overboard. However, it is possible for you to condemn the looters and support the protestors. No intelligent person can justify riots and I havent heard any attempt to do so. You spoke ad nauseum on the bad actions but never mentioned the righteous endeavor of those marching for human rights, dignity and justice. Don’t let the actions of the lawbreakers detract from the message. It’s beautiful to see all of these races coming together for a cause and gives me hope for the future. I never thought I would see such unity and its sad that it comes at a time when the country is so divided over stupid political ideologies.

Virtually all the mayors of the big cities where there are police problems are Democrats. They have jurisdiction over the police. When a problem like Minneapolis arises, it’s never their fault even though they are ultimately responsible for the police force. But they take no responsibility and instead blame it on racism. That makes the idiots who voted for them happy and they get reelected. What a vicious circle.

I’d like to see an article entitled, “UK Athletics urges Big Blue Nation to Obey the Law, Tell the Truth, Do Not Steal, Have Respect for Authority and Keep It In Your Pants Until Marriage”. Those are the things I’m seeing missing all over the USA and which would have biggest impact on this issue and a whole host of societal problems.

I was reluctant to post a comment, because I realize it’s fruitless to engage in dialogue with people of different opinions without being face to face. But I will say this. I’m not surprised at how some people in this thread are quick to point out the faults of everyone and not just admit that we as a Nation of people have a serious problem with race relations. Let’s stop the negative finger pointing and collectively figure out a way forward and address all the issues head on with open minds and hearts. I think that’s what the UK Athletics is asking of the BBN.

    Respectfully Skyzoo

Just as I presumed, the narrative constantly changes because no one really wants to talk about the elephant in the room! Some people participating in this thread still want to consistently deflect and make comments contrary to what the social injustice issues plaguing our country. Instead of making excuses, and or assumptions about what you perceive the problem is. Do some constructive research and how about we open our eyes, our hearts and our minds and stop passing blame and realize America has a serious problem that until we come together as one, we will revisit these negative and hurtful days again in the future. I don’t profess to have all the answers, but I do know that things have to change. Thank and with Respect to everyone reading this.

Isn’t it ironic that KSR shows a photo of the Cheerleaders. UK fired their coach – a black man that had won 18 National Championships at UK and was universally praised by former members – because of a complaint by one white parent. Very hypocritical of UK. If they truly believe in fairness and justice, and aren’t just spouting the PC line, rehire Jomo Thompson.
