UK adds former UC Irvine guard as walk-on

The Kentucky basketball team announced the addition of another player to its roster today, a walk-on who previously played at UC Irvine.

Riley Welch has enrolled at UK and will be a junior for the 2019-20 season with immediate eligibility. He joins freshman Brennan Canada and sophomore Zan Payne as the three walk-ons on Coach Cal’s bench.

“I can’t even begin to describe how excited I am to be joining the greatest program in the history of college basketball,” Welch said in the press release from UK. “There is nothing better than University of Kentucky basketball and I still can’t believe how fortunate I am to be able to learn every day from a Hall of Fame coach as well as compete against the best players in the country day in and day out.”

At UC Irvine, Welsh appeared in 27 games as a true freshman and scored 14 points. He transferred to College of the Desert, the one-time home of former UK quarterback Stephen Johnson, for his sophomore season, in which he averaged 8.2 points 5.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Fun Fact: His father is John Welch, a longtime NBA assistant who has been with the Clippers since 2016.

Yup, this is nothing more than another APR-boost addition, LOL. Hopefully the kid gets to dirty up his sneakers in more than just practice while he’s here.

Doesn’t APR only take into account scholarship athletes?

Every walk-on Cal has had, eventually got a scholly. If the kid proves himself in the classroom…he’ll be on scholarship before his 2nd semester there…bank on it.

Yes, I think that is a good comparison. Brad wants to coach eventually. This guy’s father is a coach. What better way to boost your resume than saying you played at UK under some of the best coaches in the business. That well may be his motivation rather than really playing very much.

Hey, an Anteater…one of the better nicknames out there; of course, the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs are good, too; they were in Pulp Fiction, if you remember.
The kid has one thing right, “the greatest program in the history of college basketball”. He’s smart.

Did none of read the last part, where it says his dad is an assistant coach for the NBA Clippers. Connections and more Connections is what this is about. Also, probably a great kid. He can add more to this team that any of you that are talking shiiit about him. Why not just say “Welcome to the team young man”! I swear we have some of the greatest fans in the world, then we have a few of you that are just punks.

Anyway, Welcome aboard young man, enjoy every second of it and learn everything you can.

I like this kid , hope he can get in and give us some thrills and complete his dream at the same time . Rooting for him to achieve the most he can. There was a time where we thought the same of jarrod polson too , he would up having a few feathers of importance in his hat .
