UCLA ends up hiring Mick Cronin

Getty Images

After all of that, UCLA ended up hiring Mick Cronin. After being turned down by John Calipari, TCU’s Jamie Dixon, and Tennessee’s Rick Barnes, the Bruins settled for Cincinnati’s head coach, giving him a six-year contract worth $24 million. He will be introduced at a press conference tomorrow morning.

Imagine being a UCLA fan last Monday, hearing the news that your school is swinging for the fences by going after John Calipari, and then finding out this morning that you ended up with Mick freaking Cronin. They should have just kept Steve Alford.

Life comes at you fast.

I assumed Beard would’ve been in the running after the season ended… This is just strange to me

Yeah, I don’t understand why more programs aren’t making a harder run at him. I would take him over Barnes.

This will surely bring in top-level talent, the likes of which Hollywood has never before seen.

Makes Gillespie hire seem pretty reasonable- if only in comparison.

Did Gillespie make 9 NCAA tournaments in a row?

Yeah just making the NCAA suddenly is a great accomplishment. Lol

      Sorry,
Didn’t realize Mick’s mom would see this.

He’s been very good, but not great at UC. He deserves a shot with a program that can recruit more talent. He may not do better at UCLA, but I’ll be interested to see if he can. Maybe not a home run hire, but a consistently very good coach.

Cronin has had a respectable career at Cincy. This isnt a home run hire but it’s not a bad hire either.

It’s not a home run. UCLA hit a pop fly that dropped in for a single when the shortstop, left fielder and center fielder thought one of the others would catch it.

    Got tired of hearing “no”.
They shouldve gone after Bruce Pearl.

3 years and they will fire him. He should have stayed at UC. UCLA is a graveyard right now

We’re better off with Alford. Speaking of Alford, is there anyway we can replace Barbee with Alford??? He’s available and I would think a better coach and recruiter

They really wanted to throw money at someone, didn’t they? He’s not a BAD coach, but 4M per year!?

After a little more thought, i think maybe that pay increase is more about cost of living in LA than the value of Mick Cronin.

    • makeitstop
      1:37 pm April 9, 2019 Permalink

DEFINITELY not about the value of Cronin. Don’t close the chapter on this search yet, remember the UT football coach search. They actually HIRED a guy and got blowback so they backed out and the rest is entertaining history. Mick may want to make sure that check clears bf he calls the movers.

I’m not so sure. I’m a moderator on Reddit’s official college basketball sub, all of our posts, and subsequent conversations, are overwhelmingly favorable towards this hire. I’m talking about officially flared and verified UCLA fans. It’s mostly UK, KU, dUKe, and UNC fans calling this hire shite (which I think it is) and saying UCLA could and should do better.

They really should have just kept Alford and told Lavar Ball to take a hike. They were doing just fine until that sideshow came along.

I was so hoping they’d hire Lavar. Well, this will hv to do.

Whether I like Cronin or not, he is a douche, as a Murray State alum it’s nice to see a former Murray State coach get such a high profile job.

He and Cal have a colorful history as I recall. Didn’t he accuse Cal of cheating and he went after him w “u better pray I don’t want some kid u want bc I’ll get him” lol.

Cronin isn’t a terrible hire, but the point of letting Alford go was to bring in someone better, not sure than Cronin

Well, the good thing is that I feel like this hire will assure us that UCLA will not put any additional distance on us in the NCAA Championship count.
