Tom Izzo shares his thoughts on Kentucky

Kentucky and Michigan State are set to be one of the headliner college basketball games early in the season. The Cats and the Spartans will battle it out in the State Farm Champions Classic at the United Center in Chicago in early November; just the fifth game of the season for Kentucky. It is sure to be a battle of top-5 teams.

Following Michigan State’s practice yesterday Tom Izzo shared his opinions about the team to reporters. Joe Rexrode, a beat writer for the Detroit Free Press retweeted:

It’s well known that Izzo and John Calipari are friends, so you might just chalk this up to banter or a spark for his own team. Either way, the pressure is building and it seems the target is going up on the backs of Wildcats. Maybe we’ll get Calipari to return fire?

Where do you get “the pressure is building” by reading izzo’s comment?

No pressure on UK, Calipari has the kind of players that Izzo only dreams about!

Considering these two teams are the favorite to cut the nets down come April 2014, I’d say the pressure is there for both with the early matchup of the #1 and #2 teams.

I guess that would be the natural reaction when we are sitting on your face.

I love this kind of stuff. Izzo is a great coach, and Cal will probably keep the friendly banter going.

I can’t believe Izzo said that w/o making crystal clear he was joking, following up with a Lou Holtz-esque comment like, “Seriously, we’ll be lucky to hang with those thoroughbreds Cal is bringing in. Not sure how we’re going to stop them.”

Because I predict that is EXACTLY how Cal will be responding PUBLICLY if he responds at all. Otherwise, it’s lockeroom material and if nothing else changes between now and game time, I predict a KY win by 3 or more points.

It’s banter; and it’s fun! Izzo wouldn’t say something like that if he didn’t mean it in fun.

We lost last year to Robert Morris in the NIT, we have a top 3 program gunning for us, we must be doing something right.

Humm, I have said all summer, If we can get past Michigan St. I believe a 40 win season is possible. This game will be a great test for the CATS. The question is, can Cal get them ready for that level of play that soon? It will be fun. Can’t wait to watch.

My prediction is uk goes 37-3 this yr. They’ll run thru the soft eastern conf but their only loses will be to the Spartans and UL(December 28 and national title game)

UL is going to be a good team, but they aren’t going to beat the most talented team Cal’s ever had @ Rupp. It’s also rediculous to predict the two meet in a title game. I say subsitute @ UF for UL.

@16 UofL won’t beat UK at Rupp. Pitino has never beaten a Cal coached UK team at Rupp & never will.

Izzo is class. No way this is anything other than good hearted banter….and I love it. Good natured smack talking is what makes college sports fun. I look forward to them being a stepping stone on the way to #9.

@17 UF?? UL is just as talented if not more than uk this year. 7 returnees 6 of whom could start for anyone in the country. Cal has never coached against a pitino team this talented! Oops he did last year and got spanked!

UofL has 2-3 future NBA players. UK 8. Yea, I’d say UofL has as much talent.

#16, what Eastern Conference? Do you mean that UK is going to be playing NBA teams? In that case, I’ll take 37-3 in a heartbeat.

Louisville has just as much talent as Kentucky? Thanks, I needed that laugh.

Calipari got “spanked” by Pitino last year? Louisville won by a whopping 3 points at home. Yep, a real spanking!
