Tom Crean once asked team managers to find him a live bat

We here at KSR love a good tale of Tom Crean being a crazy person and Mark Titus gave us just that during his appearance on today’s Pardon My Take podcast.

According to Titus, there is a story floating around Indiana’s campus that Crean asked his managers to go out and buy a live bat for a pregame pep talk. When the managers told him that is impossible, Crean wanted them to go bat-hunting through someone’s attic.

From today’s Pardon My Take with our friends Big Cat and PMT:

At one point Crean wanted to get a live bat for — a live, like, animal bat — for a pregame pep talk and he told the managers, ‘Go find me a bat.’ So the managers try to go find a bat and they realize — you can’t buy a bat and owning a pet bat in Indiana is illegal, so they tell him this and his response is, ‘Well do you guys know anyone with a bat flying around their attic you could catch?’

Titus also told the story of how Crean called him out of the blue one day to complain about something Titus had written.

You can hear it all around the 35:00 mark here.

I have to think Crean was planning to motivate his team by repeating the reported exploits of Ozzy by biting off the head of said bat…whoops, RCF was way ahead of me on this one.
