We’re inching closer and closer to college basketball season, and in turn, national outlets are releasing preseason lists. Today’s comes to us from ESPN’s Jeff Borzello, who ranked the Top 80 (!) Impact Newcomers in college hoops. As you might expect, several Kentucky Wildcats made that list. BJ Boston is No. 5, Terrence Clarke No. 13, and Devin Askew No. 23. Borzello notes that Olivier Sarr would also have made the list if he had officially been cleared by the publishing date.
Here are Borzello’s notes on Kentucky’s freshmen:
5. B.J. Boston, Kentucky (freshman): With all the personnel losses for the Wildcats from last season, John Calipari will need someone to emerge as the go-to-guy offensively; my money is on Boston.
13. Terrence Clarke, Kentucky (freshman): Clarke will impact the game in a variety of ways, and Calipari will find interesting ways to utilize him. Great physical tools and makes plays at both ends.
23. Devin Askew, Kentucky (freshman): Askew might not be as athletically explosive as some previous Calipari point guards, but he’s tough and never seems out of sync. Can score at all three levels.
Other familiar names in the rankings: Cade Cunningham (No. 1), the five-star phenom who chose Oklahoma State over Kentucky; Auburn freshman Sharife Cooper (No. 12); BYU big man Matt Haarms (No. 42), who considered transferring to Kentucky from Purdue; and former Wildcat Johnny Juzang (No. 45), who is now at UCLA.
