Three Wildcats are in ESPN’s Latest NBA Mock Draft

Even though the Kentucky Wildcats aren’t cruising by opponents, NBA scouts still see plenty of potential.

ESPN NBA Draft guru Jonathan Givony (formerly Mr. Draft Express), has three Kentucky freshman in the first round of his latest mock draft: Kevin Knox, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Hamidou Diallo.

12. Kevin Knox to the Charlotte Hornets
19. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to the Chicago Bulls
28. Hamidou Diallo to the Brooklyn Nets

You’re probably surprised to see Diallo’s name on this list.  After all, the shooting guard has reached double digits only once in the last seven games.  It’s ironic that he was projected to the Nets at the end of the first round last year, but Givony still believes it could happen.

Diallo’s stock has stagnated somewhat as he hasn’t made the type of progress scouts were hoping to see with his feel for the game or skill level. Still, he’s one of the best athletes in the draft and could very well continue to improve with the right skill-development coaching, as he’s very young and reportedly has a strong work ethic.

I wouldn’t call it pleasant. Maybe a little harsh, maybe I’m stupid. I’m just being honest. If Hami is a good ball player, then I’m a genius. Knox is a sissy. SGA is the only one that plays and tries. I’m not a coach, don’t want to coach this team. Just am ready for this season to be over. The OAD model has bitten Cal in the a** this season.

“..with the right skill-development coaching…” This is one of the narratives that is hurting recruiting lately. True or untrue, the staff has a reputation for not developing their players.

And my guess is Hatter you were like many here who blamed Cal for not making the FF last season because he didn’t play Hami.

The thing that isn’t true is that the staff has that reputation. I don’t know how anyone who even watches college basketball could think that.

Karl Anthony Towns, Tyler Ulis, Eric Bledsoe, and Josh Harrleson. That’s four guys who got drafted way higher than anyone expected when they signed with Kentucky. Four guys that made more money on their first contract playing basketball because of Kentucky and Calipari.

There aren’t many statements dumber than what UKLugo said.

The only crap a** thing around here is comment No. 1.
That said, this is ridiculous…none of the Cats are ready for the league. NBA gossip hurts kids.

It’s not Crap a**. Would you draft these 3 players for your team? No player on this team, this season is NBA ready.

That just shows how bad this draft is going to be

    • DelrayCat
      4:55 pm February 9, 2018 Permalink

The “problem” is the fact that a drafted player makes FAR LESS than the veteran minimum. These players can be stashed at the end of the bench and be used as cheap labor for the NBA. This allows teams to buy high on the stars and pay them huge money and hope for the best on these young players. If they pan out….great! But if not, oh well…they still helped to make the numbers work under the salary cap.

You can’t blame the kids. Scouts and NBA reps aren’t honest with them in their evaluations and they get this false hope that they are actually ready for the league when in reality they aren’t. (James Young, Daniel Orton, Doron Lamb)

Why would a scout tell a player he’s better than he is? A scout is not an agent. And I thought 1 purpose of the NBA draft combine was to advise players if they’re ready or not.

  7. davis2319
    1:15 pm February 9, 2018 Permalink

Still think this team can be special. Who thought that the 2011 team would make the final four? Who thought that the 2014 team would make the national championship? No one did. This team is different than those teams, but they are still talented. Just a very raw group

I hope they can get it together and make a run this season. They just aren’t NBA ready.

Drafting players in today’s league is not only about how they play this year. It’s a projection. Not sure why people can’t understand that. Are they ready for the league right now?…no, of course not. Do these teams see the potential…evidently so.

    • ClutchCargo
      1:46 pm February 9, 2018 Permalink

Exactly. Employers don’t come and recruit on campus expecting to find people who will immediately step in and perform just like someone who has years of experience. It’s about how you are projected to do in the future. Why should the NBA be any different?

  9. Bluebloodtoo
    1:59 pm February 9, 2018 Permalink

The nba draft is about potential, but the only one on this list that is coachable at this point appears to be SGA. i think his ceiling might be a lower than the other two. Regardless of that, only one of these guys is currently projected to have a guaranteed contact.

I don’t watch the NBA much, but Wednesday evening I got to watch a bit of Cleveland v. Minnesota. I cannot fathom where any player currently on Kentucky’s team would fit in to either of those teams. Shai as a project, maybe. But all of those guys can shoot and rebound, etc. I don’t say any correlation between what we are watching when the current UK team plays and the pro game.
