“There’s no athletic department in the country right now that people look at with more disgust than UofL”

Dan Wolken did an excellent job on today’s show, and between kitchen gadget reviews and interviews with Fran Fraschilla and Scott Roussel, he went on a lengthy rant about the University of Louisville. Wolken — who covers college football and basketball for USA Today — let it all out about UofL’s embarrassing string of scandals, the most recent of which will strip them of their 2013 NCAA Championship.

“Louisville, you look ridiculous, as a school, as a community that is rallying behind Rick Pitino and Tom Jurich after everything that has happened. The process may not be perfect but for the NCAA to finally stand up and say your athletic department has been a craven example of what not to do in college sports, that ‘this is not what it’s supposed to be about,’ I have absolutely no problem with that.”

“The volume of scandals and issues that have hit that school in the last ten years is nothing short of a national embarrassment,” Wolken continued. “Isn’t it time for a big cleanse? Just give the program an enema. Force it all out and start over. You’re in the ACC now. Louisville’s a good place. It’s established a level of success and competence and it’s got a good fanbase. It’s time to start over. Get rid of Jurich, get rid of Pitino, and start over. I think you would feel a lot better about yourself as a program and as a community to leave this crap behind. From a national perspective, I live in Atlanta, I get all over the country. There’s no athletic department in the country right now that people look at with more disgust than the University of Louisville.”

He’s not wrong. To hear his entire rant, listen to the podcast below around the 8:40 mark, or subscribe to our NEW iTunes KSR radio feed.

While he isn’t wrong with his statements, UofL will not get rid of Jurich & Pitino until they hire a president who will not tolerate such behavior. They’ve put winning ahead of morality and until they hire a president that is willing to change the culture of the university, the status quo will remain intact.

It’s easy for other Kentuckians to see what a slimy athletic department and institution the University of Louisville is, but it is extremely telling that someone who lives 6 hours away and seemingly has no skin in the game has such strong feelings of disgust towards the university.

I think Wolken is correct in the national perception is that UofL is the Modern Day 1980s Miami. It’s not just the recent basketball scandal and Pitino’s personal problems either. Consider:
    * Hired back Bobby Petrino, who put his mistress on the school’s payroll at Arkansas.
    * Kept Clintt Hurt on staff after he received a show cause penalty from time at Miami.
    * Allowed Willie Williams on the football team (kid that had been arrested like 20 times in high school) when even Miami denied him a scholarship.

These are the biggies. Not saying all the student-athletes and coaches are bad folks at UofL, but there is a clear leadership issue and a tendency to turn a blind eye to a lot of things to win and make money. I’m mostly disappointed in the interim president, former board members and local leaders. I just think the psychology of Louisville (a metro area run like a little Podunk town) is weird and their love and protection of the city and its school keeps them from seeing the big picture.

UK is not without its former issues, but give David Roselle and the school credit for cleaning up the 1980s mess and putting an infrastructure in place that has kept UK basketball scandal free for nearly 30 years. It’s hard for UofL to clean up with the same AD, coaches and weak administrators.

You could argue Baylor’s athletic department is in similar state of disgust.

To be fair, Baylor is kind of in their own stratosphere. I’m not sure there is an institution out there that deserves the death penalty more than Baylor.

Agreed. Assuming the stories are true, everything that went on there should get the football program kicked out of the NCAA and everyone involved banned from coaching at all levels for life

The difference is, Baylor cleaned house. Everyone is still employed at UL. Big difference.

I feel like Baylor as a university is the most disgusting academic institution in the country. Louisville’s athletic department may be the most disgusting if you isolate athletic departments from universities, but Baylor as a university was complicit in covering up a horrific number of rapes, and it went all the way to the top.

Let’s just all agree that both Baylor and U of L are disgusting, and both should get seriously smacked by the NCAA.

You could also argue North Carolina’s athletic department is in similar state of disgust.

Louisville is a sports villain program. Sports needs bad guys. This is really how it needs to be. The fall of the Soviet Union did away with the major sports villain, but maybe U of L will pick up the slack.

But we still have K.G.B. Putin hanging around. Of course, when he dies….UL will still be around, and Rick will probably still be coach.

We will always have Duke, UCLA, IU and, of course, UNC – because we all know the NCAA isn’t going to do a damn thing to that school.

I’m not surprised at all to be reading there are opinions like this around the country, and well deserved. The only thing that surprises me is that Bobby Petrino isn’t mentioned a single time!

    Who’d have guessed that!?!?!?

Hard to believe he’s the “role model’ at Louisville now!!

There’s a phenomenon in psychology called the Dunning-Kruger effect that I think could be interpreted to describe what’s going on at Louisville. The D-KE describes people of weak ability or intellect vastly overestimating their skills because they’re so terrible they don’t even have a reference point as to what “good” looks like (picture a kid who’s pretty good at Guitar Hero and thinks they’re Jimi Hendrix).

At U of Littlebrother, it seems entirely possible that they’ve been so sleazy for so long that the people at the top don’t even know what “ethical” or “decent” looks like anymore.

Sounds like the Dunning-Kruger effect could be applied to a lot of regulars in this comment section, as well.

Very well stated by Dan, I could not agree more. The more I hear and see out of u of l the more I appreciate what kind of program we have at UK. Proud to be part of the classy BBN.

So, if they get rid of Pitino and Jurich, how are they going to pay for that Yummy center deal they signed up for? If they don’t get rid of Pitino and Jurich, then they’ll continue to see these kinds of scandals. They have a lot of pressure on them to keep the brand alive so the University doesn’t go bankrupt on this Yummy deal they have. It’s kinda funny to watch them squirm in the mess they made.

Might be wise for Mr.Wolken to avoid the Yum Center for a while considering UL fans, living in Honalee, Oz, or wherever they reside, will not appreciate his comments.

No U of L fan here, but I don’t know what the big deal is about. U of L is the perfect example of society as a whole. It’s all about the money. They just got caught, and did a poor job of public relations. People should get off their high horse and look around. You want to talk about morality? Turn on the evening news and listen to the politicians and mega corporations spew their lies and vomit. THAT is what is truly disgusting. Go do some research and find out where your tax dollars are really being spent. The GOV would have you believe it is all being spent on the so-called freeloaders who are out of a job. Louisville? Heck Louisville is a drop in the bucket where questionable morality is concerned. Frankly, I’m tired of hearing about it. I’m ready for football season.
