The Sporting News ranks the top 10 Calipari and Pitino players

pitino-cal1

With the big rivalry game only a few days away, The Sporting News is getting in the spirit by ranking John Calipari and Rick Pitino’s Top 10 players. Here’s who TSN’s Ryan Fagan thinks are Cal’s Top 10 players:

1. Anthony Davis, Kentucky, 2011-12
2. Marcus Camby, UMass, 1993-96
3. Chris Douglas-Roberts, Memphis, 2005-08
4. Derrick Rose, Memphis, 2007-08
5. John Wall, Kentucky, 2009-10
6. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Kentucky, 2011-12
7. DeMarcus Cousins, Kentucky, 2009-10
8. Jim McCoy, UMass, 1988-92
9. Lou Roe, UMass, 1991-95
10. Antonio Anderson, Memphis, 2005-09

Mike DeCourcy put together the list of the Top 10 Pitino players, and I don’t think anyone will argue with #1:

1. Jamal Mashburn, Kentucky, 1990-93
2. Tony Delk, Kentucky, 1992-96
3. Antoine Walker, Kentucky, 1994-96
4. Ron Mercer, Kentucky, 1995-97
5. Francisco Garcia, Louisville, 2002-05
6. Billy Donovan, Providence, 1985-87
7. Russ Smith, Louisville, 2011-present
8. Reece Gaines, Louisville, 2001-03
9. Peyton Siva, Louisville, 2009-12
10. John Pelphrey, Kentucky, 1989-92

Agree? Disagree? Let’s hear it.

I would have D.Rose over CDR. Eric Bledsoe might also earn a spot on Cals list as he develops in the NBA.

      1:16 pm December 26, 2013 Permalink

It’s only for college. Bledsoe could be the next Jordan but he’s not moving up the list. Hence the reasons pelfrey, Donovan, and Reece Gaines made the list at all

For Cal, I would find it hard to leave Eric Bledsoe off of that list. Pitino should have Derek Anderson on his list to go along with Mercer.

Agreed. Crazy not have Derek Anderson on the list. In fact, he should be in the top half of the list.

Terrence Jones is one of Cal’s 10 best
Reece Gaines is not one of Pitino’s 10 best

TJ could have scored 25 a game if he wanted to… He took a backseat for the GOOD of the team! Besides Wall, Boogie, The brow, TJ is probably the best Cal ever had.

I’m surprised to see Mr. Doron Lamb to be exculded on this list. I believe he was the one who had a way with the ladies, not AD.

Anderson doesn’t make the list of Pitino’s best from UK?

You’d have to at least tap someone on the shoulder and whisper, “Walter McCarty?” wouldn’t you?

    How about Nazr? Magliore?

    As for Cal’s list?

I can see early exits taking people off the list – otherwise Brandon Knight, Doron, and Terrence all were very, very good …

But, yeah, some real talent there.

Knight has to be in Cal’s top 10. Behind Davis, Knight has numbers right there with Wall for best freshmen in UK history. And how do you leave Derek Anderson off Pitino’s list?

  8. DTuck
    1:13 pm December 26, 2013 Permalink

Those are obviously college lists and the NBA isn’t factored in. Derek Anderson is a travesty. He was a very important starter on the 1996 title team and was a player of the year candidate in 1997 before he was injured. Replace Gaines with him. I think he was trying to balance the list a bit with UK and UofL players. Donovan, Russ Smith, and Anderson all higher than Garcia.

Reece Gaines, Peyton Siva, and John Pelphrey over Derek Anderson? Come on…

I think you can make an argument for Julius already-look at those numbers.
Bledsoe should prob be on there – I remember liking Lou Roe’s game a lot back in the day.
Probably have to mention Knight and/or Jones too.

Anderson is on Pitino’s list for sure.

Gaines actually should be higher than 8. I would swap him with Garcia and drop Pelphrey off the list.

Last year after duke game, their were several people on here saying poythress was better as a freshman then mashburn was as a junior. I wrote a comment strongly disagreeing, and got the usual treatment, pitino lover, troll, etc.My dad and I still laugh about how delusional some of the comments were…..GoAts!

I had the good fortune of watching Cal at Memphis for 9 years prior to his move to UK. I am UK blue so understand my bias…I like JT’s list better. CDR was good but should be lower and Antonio Anderson was good but not top 10 (both improvements with JTs list)

Pelphrey, he was a leftover from Sutton, what about Epps or Turner, all they did was win. Maybe not the best scorers, but they were when it counted.

Pretty solid list J.T. but you have to swap out Bledsoe and Knight IMO. I also thing Gaines was better than Epps, but overall very good job.

I think you have to include Delray Brooks on Pitino’s list. Without Brooks, Pitino’s career would have been much different.

Sorry but no way should MKG be over DeMarcus. Watch the national championship game. MKG is the “star” who gets pulled out over and over when Cal is playing offense vs. defense the last couple minutes

  29. The Bottom Line
    3:38 pm December 26, 2013 Permalink

Derek Andersen and Sheppherd were both far superior players as compared to Silva. For that matter, I’d take Travis Ford over Silva.

  30. Catfan2000
    4:08 pm December 26, 2013 Permalink

I think everyone forgets that Chris Douglas Roberts was the dominant player and star all season long of Caliparis Memphis team that year. Not Derrick Rose. This is commonly forgotten because of the two’s NBA careers.

  31. UKBlue1!
    4:18 pm December 26, 2013 Permalink

What about Derek Anderson and Nazr Mohammed for Pitino? Demarcus Cousins Terrance Jones for Calipari. There is no way either has coached 10 better players that these.Without Jones Calipari does not win the NCAA. Demarcus Cousins might end up being the best Calipair has ever coached. The guy is a freaking beast and he is only 22 years old.

Jeff Shepard was the 1998 Final Four MVP- on a championship team -he should be on that list. Yes that was Tubby’s team but Pitino recruited him and had him for 3 years…..

  34. Sugspaul
    6:16 pm December 26, 2013 Permalink

I’d take Darius Miller over John “Can’t Guard Laettner” Pelphrey. I loved Epps as much as anyone but what about Sheppard, Nazr, Anderson, Magloire. Hell Travis Ford was a more talented PG than Epps.

Go back and watch it….. again…… and watch Pelphrey. He’s terrified of fouling Laettner and pretty much runs from the play

    • will
      1:53 am December 27, 2013 Permalink

It was Feldhaus and Pelphrey. But you should know they did exactly as Pitino told them. No guarding the in bounds and keep your hands down so not to foul. They were coached to act as they did.

  37. Trill
    7:30 pm December 26, 2013 Permalink

The lists are terrible (Pitinos in particular) I think they were just trying to even things out because you should probably have 7 players on Pitinos list from UK alone and Pelphrey should not be included. Not having Anderson or McCarty on the list is a joke.
