Mike DeCourcy over at The Sporting News has a Kentucky basketball story unlike any you’ve probably read.
It is a profile of a lifelong Cats fan and blogger who recently underwent the transition from man to woman, and how that UK fandom never changed, when everything else did.
An excerpt from the story of Danielle, one of the newest faces in Big Blue Nation:
She has followed Kentucky basketball passionately since she was 7 years old, but nearly 25 years later, this will be Danielle’s first season as a UK fan. She has a few more letters on her name and an entirely different identity than when she first joined Big Blue Nation.
“It doesn’t change the perspective at all,” she told me. “It only really changes the clothing I wear.”
This is true only in regards to basketball. Everything else in her life is different. Danielle is a transgender woman. Transitioning from Daniel to Danielle within the past six months has not been as simple as putting on a sleeker pair of shoes. There have been hormone pills, hair removal treatments and voice lessons. And therapy. There have been difficult conversations and moments of despair. [The Sporting News]
