The Sources Say Podcast Ep. 13: Cade Cunningham commits to Oklahoma State, Kentucky defeats top-ranked Michigan State

KSR’s Jack Pilgrim is joined by Travis Graf and David Sisk of Cats Illustrated for episode thirteen of the Sources Say Podcast.
This week, the trio of recruiting insiders opened the show by discussing Cade Cunningham’s abrupt commitment to Oklahoma State.
A few talking points:
  • Out of the blue, Cunningham announced his commitment to OK State. How’d that unfold?
  • The silence over the last few weeks made it tough to get updates
  • Did Cunningham troll Kentucky with his commitment video?
  • Why Devin Askew’s commitment to Kentucky allowed John Calipari to go all-in on Cunningham

Then, Pilgrim, Graf, and Sisk break down a few other recruitments…

Among the topics:
  • Isaiah Jackson has a decision date. Will it be Kentucky?
  • Would we push for a commitment from Jackson if it risked losing Greg Brown?
  • Jonathan Kuminga was at the Champions Classic to watch Kentucky play. What did he do afterward that is turning heads?
  • Kuminga sat by several familiar names at Madison Square Garden
  • On Wednesday, Kuminga cut his list to ten, but left LSU off completely. Why is this significant?
To close the show, the Sources Say crew discuss Kentucky basketball opening the regular season with a 69-62 victory over top-ranked Michigan State.
  • Who were the standout performers?
  • Is this one of Calipari’s best defensive teams?
  • Will the drop-off in talent on the schedule help or hurt the Wildcats moving forward?

Matt, it seems as though you’re leaning towards running for senate. You will dominate Moscow Mitch in the polls. Just please be sure to make the little turtle boy cry and go back in his shell. He seems to be overly sensitive to being called ‘Moscow Mitch’, which is hilarious and pathetic. Kick his ass, Matt!

Matt would get eaten alive and living in Louisville I have of UL fans that r democrats and they wouldn’t vote for Matt. I wish he would move into do nothing Yarmuth district and take his ass out. I’m tired of watching him cut ribbons for nothing he has done.

I am a conservative that enjoys your show very much. As I also enjoy the Dan Le Batard show. While my passion for UK is the main reason I listen to KSR both shows are just simply entertaining. Despite his claims, he occasionally discusses political issues and enjoys doing so. Often leading me to choose to turn on Tyler or Sturgill instead to finish my commute. An action I’ve never done while listening to KSR. With that being said, if he’s not in the show, I won’t listen. As is the same with KSR when you’re not on the show. With absolutely no disrespect to Ryan, Shannon and Drew who are great, just like Stugotz in Le Batard’s absence, the show is just not the same.
I can only imagine how frustrating this must be for you. I selfishly hope you don’t run and I get to enjoy KSR for years to come as it’s always been. Best of luck on whatever you decide. Go Cats!

Matt will get spanked, and deservedly. Talk about whining—Jones whines in his post about having to follow the law. i Heart knows it, but like most democrats, Jones doesn’t believe in the rule of law.

Jack, Travis, and David…really? Not a single one of you said you were wrong! Wow! Pathetic! Instead, Graf said he knew when Cade said 15 minutes stay tuned that you knew he was going to OK State. And all 3 said that once Cade’s camp “went dark” that you had a bad feeling, in other words you didn’t think he was coming. Backtrack much? Why would anyone listen to you guys concerning recruiting? And you keep going with this podcast and keep predicting Kuminga and Jackson and others. Why? If you guys have sources then we all have sources because you guys are guessing! Here’s how to be a recruiting “expert”, pick Kentucky and if he goes to Kentucky just say “I told you so”! If he doesn’t go to Kentucky, just say one of these things “his camp went dark/recruiting is fluid/kids change their minds/I knew it 15 minutes before the commitment!” Clowns!

I understand it is upsetting to not get Case because I am kinda mad about it too but these guys were just saying what their sources said. Like what the title of the podcast is. I feel overall Cades recruitment was not as open as perceived. Not our guys fault for taking him at his word!

HarryA, you are the only person who has responded with some sort of reason to my posts. However, the first thing that Jack, Travis, and David should have said was “I was wrong!” Instead, they took no ownership whatsoever. They made excuses and played the blame game. Again, “recruiting is fluid/kid changed his mind/his camp went dark/I knew he wasn’t going to Kentucky 15 minutes before the commitment!” Those are excuses! Fake news! Click bait! Go back and listen to the last few podcasts and see what they said about Cade Cunningham, the practicality guaranteed us Cade was coming without saying the words “done deal”. I can’t believe the 3 of them are still posting on HOB, twitter, and putting out this podcast. KY fans should never believe what they say ever again. If you don’t know where a kid is going, just say I have no clue. Travis Graf has no idea where Kuminga is going to college and neither do I. The difference between us is that I’m not post on a site we pay for and put out podcasts that we spent time listening to and getting our hopes up! If he has sources, then we all have sources. Here you go, here are my predictions Jackson to Alabama and Kuminga to Duke. If I’m wrong then (fill in the blank again) “recruiting is fluid, kid changed his mind, his camp went dark, I knew it 15 minutes before he committed, or I can only post what my sources tell me!” That way I’m off the hook, not my fault. But if I’m right, “TOLD YOU SO!!!!”

I agree that when analysts or recruiting insiders are wrong they should admit it is their fault but for the most part the big time recruiting guys like Evan Daniels, Corey Evans, etc. never really come out and say my bad, it’s usually just my sources were wrong or something like that. Things sounded promising about Cade for a while and obviously Travis and jack weren’t the only ones thinking it (Evan Daniels and Jerry meyer). If I had to bet I would’ve bet on Kentucky but apparently his family ties were too much to overcome. I still enjoy this podcast very much and think that the information they give out is what they are hearing and a lot of the time it turns out to be correct but sometimes like this instance it is false. I understand why you’re frustrated though, most of BBN. Hopefully we get some other guys!!

HarryA, I have listened to every single one of the Sources Say podcast, some of them twice because I drive a ton for work so I get what you are saying. However, just because Evan Daniels and Jerry Meyer didn’t publicly come out and say they were wrong, doesn’t mean these 3 UK recruiting “experts” shouldn’t. They are on our team, we listen to their podcast, the more we listen, the more followers and advertisers they will get. This situation with Cunningham, they went to extreme. They even had 2 podcasts a few weeks just because they were “hearing” more and more info about Cunningham and UK. So they started this huge build up with more and more buzz with Cade and UK only to find out that he goes to OK State. Here’s the thing, I think the 3 of them are NOVICES with a few sources that doesn’t know what to do with their sources. For example, let’s say the genius (Travis Graf) calls his Cunningham source and says he I’m Travis Graf UK basketball recruiting insider, what are you hearing with Cade’s recruiting. What do you think the source is going to say, “oh he’s going to play for his Brother at OK State!”????? Hell no, he’s playing the same game that our “experts” are playing which is….build build build build build up and get more and more buzz on Cade. It’s exactly what I have been saying, fake news and click bait to get more followers on twitter (which they mention every single time on the podcast) and more and more listeners on the podcast. Again, if you don’t know where a kid is going, just say so. And in this situation, they didn’t know and they should have said that. And now, they need to say they were wrong. Novices!

They said in their podcast the longer he waits the better for Kentucky, which didn’t happen, most people thought he was going to wait until Nov.29th in front of friends and family, so they had a reason to believe he would go to OK ST when he said stay tuned.

timwarren – FYI, I don’t listen to the podcasts, but I am a member of a pay site where Travis and David post “insider” information. After the Cade announcement, they did admit to being wrong and stood behind the fact that their sources were telling them UK and that they would never intentionally blow smoke up our a**es or just guess. From what I have read of them, when they are guessing they say so. Not meaning to come down on you too hard, but just fill you in on some info I guess you don’t have.

    • timwarren

BigBlue1976, Im a paying member of the HOB so I read everything Graf said and it’s not enough. I have also read all the comments on there saying Graf doesn’t owe us an apology and I disagree. He doesn’t owe us an apology because Cade didn’t pick us, but he does owe us one because of the build up he created on the podcast. Listen, they get paid for HOB and with any business marketing is a big part of it and this podcast is a big part of their marketing. For example, let’s say Travis sold televisions and he advertised that his store was getting in the best new TV on the market for a weekend sale but you have to be there at 8 AM. Then we show up and the TVs didn’t come in but he has other TVs we can buy. And of course, he’s going to blame the manufacturer or the shipping company. That’s what they did with Cade and KY putting up extra podcasts and having the “Cade Tracker”. Like I said earlier, bait and switch from a bunch of NOVICES!!! If you don’t know where a kid is going just say so!!! Pathetic!

You guys just don’t get it, do you? The difference is that MATT OWNS THIS WEBSITE so he can choose whether or not to allow comments. You are free to go to another site or comment on another thread, as you have done. Mitch, on the other hand, apparently thinks he owns the airwaves and all forms of public discourse. No matter what Matt’s political leanings may be, this should deeply concern anyone who claims to support the Constitution. I laugh when people throw around terms like socialism and communism – controlling the airwaves is one of the first power plays of a totalitarian government. Be careful who you support, because history has given us plenty of examples of people who wrap themselves in the flag or religion whose motives are dubious at best.

Of course Matt is not allowing comments on his “statement” so I’ll post it here.

Matt, you are not the victim here. The democrats had a legitimate argument regarding the tv show and the republicans have a legitimate argument here. This is nothing but a p.r stunt by you to gain sympathy and support and it’s really sad. You talk about both sides playing political games but you are doing the exact same thing. You know exactly what you are doing by continually delaying your decision and then going on this “book tour”. You are not the victim so stop trying to martyr yourself. It’s really pathetic. To say that you aren’t using the radio show to help your cause is just not true. You mention your book and hint around your decision every day. How can you say with a straight face that this isn’t a stunt on your part to gain sympathy and support? Do you really have that low of an opinion of the people that listen to your show? We are not as stupid and as naive as you make us out to be.

This is politics. It’s taking Matt to long to figure out if he is running or not. Mitch is probably aggravated about that. Also Matt and his co hosts blasted Bevin on the show a few times last week. So what is the other party suppose to do? Well file a complaint. U can’t talk politics on a radio show and not expect anyone not to feel like they are being cheated. Yes, it’s a low blow to Matt but this is what politics is. Either u get hit and fight back or you act like a child and write a long post on ksr and complain about it. I don’t think Matt has the backbone for politics but I’m no politician, I’m just giving u my opinion
