Once again, everyone played great for Kentucky down here in the Bahamas, but it was Dakari Johnson who really stole the show in the game’s opening minutes. The UK big man was absolutely manhandling our boy Eloy Vargas and the Dominican bigs inside, hauling in seemingly every rebound on both ends and muscling his way to the basket for buckets at the rim. He also showed off that new mobility and trimmed physique, something he attributes to a new diet plan from Rock Oliver. He said Rock weighs him everyday and the pounds are falling off from cutting carbs and eating more greens.
After his big game against the Dominican Republic, Johnson simply said of his performance, “I’ve done my best to just play my role and contribute to the team.”
He contributed alright. According to @KSRBevans, Johnson, who was playing in front of his mom for the first time on this trip, rebounded 29 percent of his team’s missed shots in the first half. That is insane, people. He finished the game with a double-double, 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Maybe the play of the game for Johnson was when a teammate (I forgot who) hit him on the fast break for a two-handed dunk. The Dakari Johnson of 2013 wouldn’t have been able to run the floor to get in position to make that play. It was all hustle and it resulted in a monster slam.
Great game for the big guy and Mama was proud.
