The most pleasant surprise last night? De’Aaron Fox’s shooting

Lost in the shuffle of horrible officiating, Isaiah Briscoe’s heroics, and Malik Monk sealing the win with four clutch free throws in the final seconds was De’Aaron Fox’s markedly improved shooting last night. Fox was 11-17 from the floor last night for 22 points, and those numbers don’t really do justice to how much better his jumper looked, a result of mandatory extra time in the gym.

“It’s just things that I’ve been working on the last few weeks,” Fox said afterwards. “It’s a lot of shots that teams are giving me and I just have to knock them down. Nothing more, nothing less I can say about that.”

John Calipari was very impressed with his freshman point guard.

“Yeah, he’s really spending time in the gym right now. He’s really mastering his craft. He made a 3, he made his free throws. He played well. He’s 11 out of 17.”

Isaiah Briscoe — whose own jumper has improved — said he and Fox are staying in the gym together to work on their shots, and it shows.

“He’s fine. We’re actually–we stay after practice, shoot every day. He’s in there before practice working on his shot. When you work hard, you don’t really worry about missing shots or anything like that. He knows how hard he works and, like he said, he’s been working hard. He was due for a good game. He deserved it.”

Box score says that Fox didn’t make a 3 or any free throws. Facts are optional for Cal’s quotes too.

Fox didn’t shoot any free throws either, so he hit or missed all of them depending on your outlook. He only took one three, but knocked down a few 15 foot pull-up jumpers. He actually did shoot really well – 65% from the field is solid (and the highest on the team for anyone not named Bam, who dunked 3x and missed a short one).

      Schroedinger’s free-throws?

His toe was barely touching the 3pt line on one of his made baskets, perhaps with all the action Cal thought it was a 3 and didn’t notice it was a 2. And with so many free throws in a game like that it would be hard to know who shot what. Sure, he can watch tape or review the stat box, but he’s a busy guy. Everyone says something incorrect at several points in life, luckily most of us don’t have ours printed for others to dissect.

But according to Drew he “still can’t knock down the jumper (although I think he did get one this time)”………. I know it’s only one game but his jumper did look a lot better last night.

Fox was 0-1 from in 3 pt shots last night and is 4-32 (12%) this season. It’s great he is putting in extra work on his shooting. If he were to hit even 30% that would make a big difference.

Yes he technically didn’t make a 3 pointer last night, but he did make a perimeter jump shot with his foot on the 3 point line. So he hit a shot from 3pt range… it just only counted as a 2 as his foot was too big.

Hey, they counted Johnny David’s shot as a three – why not De’Aaron’s? 😀

I cant believe Cal is letting them be lazy and shoot so many 10 to 15 footers!! If they keep it up they wont go anywhere. Fox and Monk can get to the basket any time they want. Reminds me of the Harrisons in that S,Carolina game we barley won. They should have killed that team. Wheres the drive and dish?? They need the “Tweak”

It reminds me of that time Kyle Macy did the same thing against Georgia in 1978. We barley won that one too! I was so mad!!
