The craziest game ever ends in heartbreak

I don’t even know what to say about that.

The game that would never end is finally over, and it ended in the most bizarre way possible.  After 45 minutes of non-stop fouls, the Cats fell to Arkansas 87-85 in overtime, after a dunk by Michael Qualls with 0.2 seconds left.  With a wing and a prayer, Aaron Harrison inbounded the ball only to watch it get stuck in the scoreboard in the middle of the arena, and after a replacement ball was found, the game quickly ended.

Julius Randle was magnificent, with 20 points and 14 rebounds.  James Young scored 23, and Andrew Harrison took the game to overtime with a three at the end of regulation.  The story of the game, unfortunately, may be fouls.  A whopping 60 personal fouls were called in tonight’s game, with more than a few very questionable.

It’s late, and the outcome sucks, but be proud of the fight these young Cats showed.  More coming all night morning.

And now everyone is gonna hype Arkansas like this is a “good” loss. It’s not.

Tired of losing… It’s supposed to end. It doesn’t. Yes they fought hard but the weaknesses are just too many…

Are you serious? This is a team of freshmen and they’ve lost 4 games. No, they’re not going undefeated, but they are freshmen. Loss to Michigan State, acceptable. Loss to Baylor? Bad ended, but an acceptable loss. Loss to UNC? Rough loss, but again, not unacceptable. This loss? It hurts, but the reffing was atrocious and that is a tough place to lose. They make freshmen mistakes because they are freshmen. Some laziness? Maybe…but they are freshmen, and lots of them have bad habits to break.

Quit being such a dramatic cry baby. Look at the game in an unbiased way. They never stopped trying, even with all of the terrible fouls and bad calls. Sucks to lose it, but it’ll help them in the long run.

Just tell me when it is supposed to end Ben.

UK is 0-4 in close games (12-0 in games decided by more than 5). It’s a sign this team can ONLY beat in scrubs that they are vastly superior too. Well I guess we can also thank Rupp arena for winning the UL game.

It’s not a “good” loss, but it’s not a bad one either. I think UK was down by 6 w 10 min to go and fought back. This team would not have done that fighting 4 weeks ago. They’re growing.
And no one forget: Arkansas record at home vs on the road. It’s a tough place to win.

That Arkansas team ain’t making the tourny, folks. Sure, the youngins are growing by leaps and bounds with each game, but when they don’t stick around for it to really pay dividends…

Matt Jones described a scenario where everyone but JR and JY come back next year; now THAT team might show the fruits of this year’s labor (and disappointment).

We shoot 47% from field to their 37%, we out rebound them by 20 {twenty} freakin rebounds. How do you lose? Andrew Harrison is LAZY and he had 7 turnovers, which is how many the entire team had for Arkansas. PLUS a team that misses 14 free throws, but coach is not worried about free throws.

    • mashburnfan1
      12:07 am January 15, 2014 Permalink

Randle had 6 turnovers as well, we will never beat any decent team in tourney with turnovers like this. The last one by Randle, throwing the ball right under your basket is unforgiving. You learn that in 10 yr old ymca ball. Of course when Young throws it in our own basket we think it is funny, this was essentially the same thing. You out shoot and out rebound anyone like we did this evening and it should be a double digit win.

    • jus sayin
      12:10 am January 15, 2014 Permalink

He had 5 turnovers and 2 of them were not his fault. He also had more assist than turnovers and played good defense on his man.

    • mashburnfan1
      12:13 am January 15, 2014 Permalink

And last thing I will say, Harrison was horrible yet plays 44 minutes, why not give Hawkins some time, especially in a game like this. I just don’t get why Andrew is depended on so much by Cal. How many times do you let him screw up and do nothing. The turnover where he catches it right on the half court line is just stupidity, always see the player go to back court to catch the pass. Andrew probably did not want to have to take 3 extra steps, lazy, worthless sack of crap.

    • kfund

Every player at this level should know on offense throw it under the basket, on defense throw it down the court. Inexcusable.

Mashburnfan1: “play Hawkins??” Wow! Amazing analysis. I imagine that crossed through Cal’s brain before he played Polson. Maybe give some thought to the likelihood that Hawkins hurt himself early in the 1st half diving for a ball.

Mashburn fan is a troll and an idiot. Do you get off blasting an 18 yo kid? Do you want your kid talked about like that? I guess it was Aaron in the number5 that hit a shot to send it to OT. He was out of control some but he was aggressive. You’re the same type that crushed Teague and knight and probably even wall when he said he wasn’t having fun. If you think Hawkins should play over Harrison you don’t know what you’re watching. Matt’s right: the team goes as far as Andrew takes them.

I know what to say. The same thing I have worried about all along. “Superstar” players with no fundamentals, and no free throws. Granted they didn’t get any favorable calls, but when you miss 14 Free throws and lose by two on an unchecked put back slam what else do you call it?

Julius was magnificent, yes, but there’s no excuse for that fumble inbounding the ball at the end. That led to an Arkansas basket. Sad thing is it wasn’t our only turnover in our last few possessions.

But the bottom line? We go 26-40 from the FT line and lose by 2. Cal, please don’t tell me not to worry about free throws.

Please believe me that I’m not one to complain about officiating after a loss. I’m much more likely to complain after a win, but that was an absolute atrocity. Probably should have overcome the bullshit calls and won but it was quite possibly the worst I’ve ever seen. Randle’s 2nd foul, Youngster 3rd & 4th fouls (or 2nd & 3rd- dont remember how many he ended up with), the over & back obvious push in overtime- a 2 pointer called a 3 in first half that was never reviewed (go back & look) dude’s toes were over the line- the non-flagrant on young, the flagrant on Lee. So many totally idiotic & unexplainable calls that almost unanimously went against the Cats. I’m proud if how they fought. hate that it ended like that.

The Harrison twins lack of fundamentals was huge. Not blocking out on the last play, sure. So many errors, lack of consistent intensity. Good plays at times, of course, but pure lack of fundamentals remains a major hinderance.

The free throws are on the players at this point. The team leaders should have everyone on the team shooting free throws before and after every practice and any down time. This is time for a players meeting and make up their own minds they are going to FIGHT the rest of the year.

Clearly missed officiating. The bump over and back was but one inexcusable call.

Until this entire team is ready to fight every possession and have the will to crush, not to match, but to crush the will of every other team they will remain mediocre, and a disappointment.

Even if this looks like the Knight team, that team had something this one didn’t, a reliable point guard and center who was consistent.

Arkansas had some bad calls called on them also. LIke the drive by aaron harrison in ot where no one touched him. yes the fouls that were called well a lot of them were garbage but bottom line our point guard is not a point guard and we can’t make a free throw to save our lives..just make 8 more than we did and we win easily..

kyboy, maybe you should stop listening to the announcers and actually watch the game. The guy they called the foul on (#2) did not touch him, but #00 ripped his arm off and the refs called the foul on the wrong player. Suprise suprise. Coincidentally, that would have been #00’s 5th foul and he should not have been in the game to miss the last 3 ponter that got dunked in. Again, stop listening to the announcers and only looking at #2 in the replay, because he clearly did not touch Harrison, but #00 about ripped his arm off. I guess if you are going to stick up for pathetic officiating it should a pathetic attempt at it. In that regard, job well done.

For those thinking this team was 2012 good…well sorry you bought the hype.

Truth is this team is going to struggle just like the 2011 team did in conference…but this team will only go as far as young and the twins take them…and that’s the simple truth. While There is no Brandon knight on this team, that’s not to say this team can’t significantly improve is turnover and terrible free throw shooting.

Randle can’t do it alone….somebody has to hit more threes down the stretch.
Willie Cauley needs to get back on this planet and stop playing with his towel.

I guess I am in the minority, but this gives me a lot of hope for the SEC and NCAA tourneys. The young guys had a lot of fight and lost in one of the hardest places to play in the country. The last second shots made by Young and Harrison shows we have guys to go to when we need a miracle. Yeah FT shooting sucked, but there were heinous foul calls and no calls. If Andrew harrison is the best pg in his class the others must be horrible. Just because you’re 6’6″ and can halfway dribble does not mean you are the #1 pg. There were a lot of positives in this game. I liked the hustle (not that last play) for the most part. This team played in one of the toughest places to play in the SEC, and they almost came away with a victory.

What cost them the game, in my opinion? UNFORCED turnovers (freshmen mistakes) and missed free-throws at key moments.

With that said, leave all of this ‘kick Andrew Harrison off the team’ crap off of this board! The kid did not have a great game, but the weight on his shoulders is already heavy enough. This was the most hostile environment they have played in this year, and somehow they were in it till the end. He will learn from his mistakes.

P.S., I will also say that James Young needs to stop taking ridiculous shots off of O-Rebounds.

College basketball is getting to the point in which you need NBA all stars to win on the road due to the extreme home court advantage. It is getting worse all the time. Granted, this was a loss that I expected and I am proud of our effort. I know that without a doubt if we played Arkansas anywhere else that we would likely win and possibly win big. I just knew that everyone intended for Arkansas to win this one due to the previous two losses they had and our inexperience. This will still help us for March. We now need to win one that we shouldn’t to make up for this loss.

Would be an easy game for officials if all they had to do was make sure that the fouls were close to even at the end of games. If you are going to make observations about the calls, at least come up with a better argument that each team fouled the same. lol

Florida went to OT at Arkansas too. So they just about lost to this team as well. That tells me we’re really close to the level of Florida.

The officials controlled the game through-out to keep it close on the spread. All you have to do is look at the Vegas odds. We went from a 2 point favorite to a 1 point under dog just before game time. They kept it close with fouls and other bad calls through out the game. No 10 on Arkansas should have fouled out in the first half, but somehow made it through the entirety.

With all that said, I think the Cats are making headway. With the youngest team in the nation, as long as we are headed in the right direction, we’ll be OK. Obviously, losses hurt your seed, but I think it is where we are we mostly freshmen. The defense is not where it needs to be, but is improving. By the way, Cal doesn’t make a big deal about free throws, because that is how he has to be for his young players (take off pressure). Free throws are all mental, but when you make a big deal, suddenly the basket shrinks.

    Go Cats!

I wonder if Wisconsin fans are ready to commit suicide after losing at Indiana? Ranked team losing on an unranked team’s court. I bet Wisconsin is going to be OK.

This team has 6 seed written all over it, I’m getting tired of the “they’re freshmen” excuse. Remember, these are one and dones. I don’t really care how good they will be in a couple years because they won’t be on our team! Wake up fans!

So Cal should recruit worse players? Is that what you want? Isn’t that why we got tired of Tubby? Can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Darth, not worse players… just decent players who will develop and stay long enough so that the manufactured excuses of “we’re a young team” and “they’re just freshmen” don’t cling to the UK program like a cheap suit. You’re always gonna have that excuse until Cal starts recruiting differently. Maybe he’s afraid of being exposed as an average coach. Notice that the only times he’s ever been relevant as a head coach has been on teams where he’s had superstars. 1 year of Marcus Camby. 1 year of Derrick Rose. 5 years at UK and going after nothing but one-and-doners. What about the rest of his 30 year career? How come the rest of it isn’t as storied?

Man, everybody standing there ball watching. I just can’t get over the lack of fundamentals in basketball today, just one guy to block out and three guys standing there, whats it going to take to get these guys to play every second of the game. Not to even mention free throws, every game they have lost is because of free throw shooting. Well it’s just a game but a little more common sense fundamental basketball would be greatly appreciated.

Don’t worry Cats’ fans, Matt Jones rushed onto Twitter seconds after the game to tell everyone how great the team played. So, we can all relax. Banner 9 is just around the corner apparently. I’ve never known Matt Jones to be wrong… After all, he’s a basketball expert. Just listen and learn!

No one has mentioned Poytress, I thought the effort he made getting the rebound and the pass to tie the game near the end of the overtime was one of the greatest individual effort plays I have seen in the last couple of years. Poytress and Randle are now playing with heart and fight. This team did some maturing tonight.

He never boxes out, he also always leaves his man open for no apparent reason whatsoever. His lack of fundamentals is frightening, and for some reason he always dribbles TOWARDS THE SIDELINE when bringing the ball up the court, someone needs to explain to him that is causing a double team with one guy guarding him, his basketball IQ is so low Obama’s approval rating is laughing about it.

We are what we are shooting FT’s. Both teams shot their season average…Should we be better? HELL YES, but it’s not gonna change over night, and probably not even by March. I do have a problem with the TO’s. 17 is unacceptable no matter if we’re @Arkansas, Duke or wherever…I don’t like to talk about officiating but it definitely leaned toward the home team. I don’t expect to get all of those calls and don’t expect opponents to get them at Rupp either. We take care of business and we would have won the game regardless…Lot’s to work on and less time than you think to get things right…

Seems like a lot of one on one drive and either blocked shot or steal for Arkansas. This team still doesn’t understand the drive and kick out for a wide open shot. They frustrate the crap out of me, so many empty possessions. They could beat most teams by 20 if they could learn to make every possession as if it were there last. And I believe they have figured out how to defeat UK every year, just tell them how great they are, and that they have won it all before they ever play a game. What was it Cal always said about drinking the poison, think they have consumed the whole barrel. Moral victories still count as a loss, any way you look at it..

We just played a shitty team in the sixth or seventh best conference in the nation. We cant shoot free throws and our players have no clue how to act in a high pressure situation. Yes, the refs sucked. That is no excuse for us losing this game. Bud Walton arena? Piss on that place, we are UK. Those guys won because they had something to prove. They were hungry, they played for their lives, for their fans. We have a bunch of primadonas that got by on their prodigial talents all their lives. They were bigger and stronger than the competition, this is a different world. You think want you want but im gonna tell you what has to happen. J Polson and W Stein are gonna have to get into some asses. They need to call midnight free throw practices for all players until they get this damn FT situation taken care of. Cal is gonna have to get mean and start the bench a time or two. Any man that cant hit 80% of his FT out of the coal lodge until he corrects the situation. We will get better but without some extreme measures we are bound for an early out of the tourney.

Best comment of the night, others have blue tinted glasses on. I remember the same comments around this time last year, “wait until the tourney, these losses will help us win in the tourney, moral victories, blah, blah.” Guess what, when you have bad losses during the year, they catch up with you, and sometime you don’t make the tourney, starting to sound familiar folks? This team has at least 3 more losses in them prior to SEC tourney. If we can make it out of the first round of SEC tourney maybe we make the tourney, but right now, not seeing it. Oh by the way, the Louisville win will not look all that good come end of the year, bank on it.
