The Cats are No. 12 in the updated KenPom rankings

Ken Pomeroy and his mysterious, magical machine of mathematics updated the KenPom college basketball rankings yesterday and your University of Kentucky Wildcats are the 12th ranked team in the country, several spots behind the top-ranked Louisville Cardinals. Groan.

The Cats are the fifth best offensive team, according to KenPom, and way down at 45th in adjusted defense. Louisville ranks first and fifth in the those categories. Groan again.

Pomeroy’s Pythagorean expectation approach — whatever that means — has been incredibly reliable in rating college basketball teams since he first began doing it in 2003; it often has a better success rate than the RPI ratings.

See the rankings for yourself here.

While Pomeroy rankings are the new black right now, I’d also like to point out that UK’s RPI, which the NCAA relies on heavily when determining seeding is #22. While this isn’t all that great at the moment, consider UL’s RPI is ranked #41 right now. Consider also their SOS, which has UK’s ranked #20 and UL not even in the top 50. I take this to mean that UK has a better offense than UL and the defense may not even factor into the outcome on this one. Both teams are nearly impossible to stop.

Just got redirected away from the main page to download Candy Crush Saga from the App Store. I didn’t even click on any ads… It warmed my heart so much that I decided to complain (GTA is more my style). Murry Christmas.

Well that’s interesting. That’s not supposed to happen.

GTA is more my style, too.

UL very well may beat us, but If you swithced teams schedules, and UK got to play at home every game against Hofstra and Fairleigh Dickonson, Id bet we would have a top 5 Kenpom, and AP ranking. Its easy to say our defnse itsnt as good when were playing AT UNC, NEUTRAL games against Baylor (in their home state) and Mich St, and our home “cup cake” teams include Belmont and Boise St (Boise was ranked 2nd highest scoring team in America).

Ive seen UL play, and they play intense basketball, but player for player, they are significantly smaller and less talented as EVERY position (except maybe Smith vs AA Harrison, but even that is not a huge UL advantage).

    We shall see

It’s pretty incredible to see just how pathetic some of the SOS numbers are for the Top 25 teams not named Kansas. Kansas at #8 SOS is the only Top 10 team (in kenpom) that are even in the top FIFTY. Only two other teams are even in the Top 100. Wow, Kansas didn’t do themselves any favors in their scheduling and their two remianing non con games are against kenpom #75 Toledo and #29 San Diego State. Yeesh.

The good news is the adjusted defense is trending upwards.

The Boys in Blue better be on their game because the calls will go to Louisville even thro the game is in Rupp. Pitino with that girl smile gets it his way just like he did in the NCAA Tour. last year. I have heard all the BS about what he did for KY but what about how KY made him “A Name ” in coaching. I have no respect for him or UL after his “Table Affair”.
