The Athletic: UK offers Calipari lifetime extension to counter UCLA offer

According to Seth Davis over at The Athletic, Kentucky has offered John Calipari yet another contract extension, this time for life.

The way Davis’ story reads, it sounds like Kentucky got a little worried about Calipari’s talks with UCLA, after granting him permission to speak to the Bruins about its head coaching job. UCLA offered Calipari a contract worth $48 million over six years, says Davis, but Cal declined the offer.

From the story:

The new contract would include a 10-year term as coach plus a promise to serve as a paid ambassador for the school after his retirement. Calipari’s current contract runs through 2024, after an extension in 2017.” [The Athletic]

So to recap, UCLA offered Calipari a pay cut (before accounting for California taxes) and UK came back with an extension?

Man, Cal is a master negotiator.

Now make him feel appreciated in Lexington.

Will he be a paid ambassador on how to underachieve on an annual basis with the country’s best talent?

I’m not sure why Mitch felt intimidated into drafting this. He talks about how much pressure is on this job yet this contract speaks the opposite. Does he take heat from fans? Sure, any coach at KY would at $8 million a year that’s delivered 1 championship in a decade and hasn’t made a FF in four seasons.

I love it! Keep crying you ignorant trolls and most of us will continue to enjoy the most successful program in history with a chance to win it every.single.year. And when he wins the next championship you’ll have nothing left to say about his “under-achievements” . Go find another team who achieves more-losers.

I’m glad he is staying! I feel like if we lost Cal we lose more than just a great coach. He has us at the top every year; when basketball starts Kentucky is always one of the main stories. I believe without Cal we lose our relevance. He brings a buzz every year that we would lose if not for him.

Thanks for the insult 4ever, but I think my questions are legitimate for the contract being proposed. Do I expect 40-0 every year? No. A title every year? No. But I think the expectations of reaching a FF every 4-5 seasons are very reasonable with the talent and program.

I don’t like Coach K or Duke, but if people are going to compare Cal and K, they should consider how many championships each has won in the last 30 years. Cal has one. Coach K has 5. And I’m always hearing the only banners they hang in Rupp are the Championship banners. If Barnhart wants to give him more money that’s his prerogative. But they say Cal almost left in 2014, so if he’s not happy here maybe he should leave for fruit and nut land. At least the weather is nice there. Just look out for the fires and illegal aliens Cal.

With the talent Kentucky gets they should have won more titles than one , he wore those 5 kids out in that second half , instead of putting a near 7 footer in the game to stop the driving by auburn’s smaller guards he keeps the same kids on the floor and they couldn’t stop those guards from scoring , should of had a shot blocker in there that was also a fresh body , I cannot stand the way Cal coaches , let him go to Ucla , any coach out there with the exception of K and izzo would love coaching Kentucky basketball

I actually thought this was an April Fool’s joke it’s so ridiculous, but since CBS and other real outlets have it, I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. UCLA is not a dumpster fire, but it’s a pretty hot mess. They aren’t even the most popular basketball team in town. U are lost behind the Lakers, Clippers, Dodgers, Angles, Rams, Raiders, Chargers, Kings and Ducks. U share the city w USC and Pepperdine and Loyola and UCSB, UC-Irvine, etc etc etc. there is a millionaires tax there to punish u if you make “too much.” I sell ur house in Lexington and can just about get a nice condo in Beverly Hills, or a small place in Malibu, but that would be 45 minutes from ur office if the canyon is not on fire, or PCH closed for mudslides. It’s beautiful. It’s a nice place to visit. I was offered a CEO job there for 2x my salary in Florida and it wasn’t enough to cover the difference in taxes and cost of living. C’mon, double his salary, make it real but matching it? All UCLA wanted was the pres from being in the convo if that’s their offer. But thx UCLA for making the point 99% of us not operating under an alias hv been making since yesterday’s life altering event (sarcasm implicit).

I trust cal. We can be critical but to bash is crazy. I believe we were gonna win and cal can’t hit free throws or control dumb turnovers like carrying and just jumping in with no vision or plan like hagans dis amongst others even with a hot auburn and ya slowing down we had the last shot to stop them and d and get a bucket on o. It be a different story if one had happened whether it be a shot, free throw, to, stop, but it was a good season. After that duke loss I think we did a respectable job and got better.
