Texas Tech giving students free beer before the Kentucky game

As if Lubbock, Texas wasn’t going to be wild enough for the Kentucky game on Saturday, Texas Tech is giving its students free beer before the game.

Yesterday, Red Raiders coach Chris Beard and point guard Davide Moretti invited students to a tailgate beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday with free food and beer (for those of age). They also encouraged everyone to wear black because it’ll be a blackout (of course).

Here’s a sneak peek of what the Cats can expect at United Supermarkets Arena:

Earlier today, John Calipari said he’s looking forward to seeing how his team keeps its composure in front of what will likely be the wildest crowd they’ll play in front of all season.

“We’ve got a tough game. Going in, that’ll be one of the best environments we’ll play in. Now, the good news is, the Arkansas environment, the Georgia environment, the South Carolina — everywhere we go is that way, but this may be on top of that.

“But, you know, this is what we need as a team. I’m trying to empower them. Now it’ll be a rough team, a team that plays hard and if someone’s not giving it, as a team they’ve got to come to me and say, ‘We’ve got to get him out, Coach.’ That’s when I know, instead of me having to drive during these kind of situations, they’re doing it themselves.”

I don’t know if it was in the original article, but it does now say “for those of age”. When I was 21 and I’m college, it was my experience that anything that involved free booze usually got a bit wild. Not sure TT thought this completely through.

What could possibly go wrong with this?

Players requesting lineup changes of their peers….or the beer consumption? Not sure if an instate kid like Maxey, for example, is going to be too thrilled for any of his teammates request he be removed from this game, or ANY game for that matter.

      Econ,
Exactly my reaction. Full arena of rabid fans, it’s their Superbowl, and we’ll just give them all free alcohol.

NoCode, Being a player-lead team is what we want. The team definitely has a “team first” mentality and they have absolutely proven to be selfless.

So that school is giving “students” beer at the pregame, and my pushing 40 year old self is not allowed to purchase a beer at Rupp? How very strange.

I believe their beer of choice is O’Doul’s.

They aren’t giving the players alcohol, lol. What happened with KU/KSU was in no way instigated by fans.

TT (Texas tech, not Tyler Thompson) played in the championship game last year. This year, they are having a black out for a non conference game. Little brothers running around all over the college basketball landscape…..

This is genius. KU/Kstate incident involved parties on the court, it’s not comparable. It’s a school sponsored event so there’s obviously going to regulations of a sort. If UK doesn’t allow alcohol sales for next years athletic calendar, they’ll drop the ball.

Cops could park outside the parking lot and chain bust students for dui.

Nice pic of Beard up top. And the cops asked him how many beers he had, and he says ONE. Sure thing, Chris.
