Tennessee basketball coaching search turns to…Michael White?

Just a few days after watching a coach who led Tennessee within a shot of the Elite 8 walk out the door for the California job, Tennessee basketball has apparently narrowed its search. One of the primary targets according to many reports? Louisiana Tech’s Michael White. If Tennessee fans were unhappy with Cuonzo Martin’s work for the Vols, I’m not sure this hire will fulfill the wishes for a “sexy” name or an exciting hire like Bruce Pearl.

Michael White does have some SEC experience, having played at Ole Miss as well as working for the Rebels as an assistant before being hired by Louisiana Tech. White has been successful at La Tech, putting up a 74-31 record. 56 of those wins have come in the last 2 seasons.

According to sources who have talked to, the Vols had their sights set on some more A-list coaches, but the attractiveness of the Tennessee job is apparently not high enough to lead to many bites.

“A source told that Tennessee has informally contact some A-list candidates but that interest hasn’t been mutual. Another source told that at least one potential candidate expressed no interest only because Tennessee’s roster is in bad shape given that the Vols are losing four of their top five players from a Sweet 16 team.”

What do you think of Michael White as a potential new addition to a struggling SEC’s list of coaches?

If they hire this guy they’ll beat us about once every 10 games we play them, maybe not even that. I personally don’t care if UT is good or not because its not worth having the SEC be good if UT is also a dominant team. We don’t have to really worry about them anymore which will be nice

Tennessee is down but not out.
This too will pass and they will be the thorn again soon enough.

Who? Absurd to think that the attractiveness of the UT heading coaching job has decreased by this much. Maybe if they treated their personnel well and correctly they wouldn’t be here in the first place – probably something plenty of coaches are taking notice of. Good job UT

really wish Pearl would’ve held out to take this job (if it would’ve even been offered). Rivalries aren’t fun when they’re not competitive

I, for one, have been very impressed with Michael White. It’s always better (for us) when UT goes for flash over substance, but in this case I fear they may have gotten it right.

How awkward is it going to be when UT plays Auburn next season? VERY.

Better win percentage than Bruce Pearl coming in and it’s not like Pearl (despite a division II championship) was that sexy of a hire. Tennessee is not willing to pay enough to hire a bigger name so it gets what it gets. And I find it extremely hard to believe a coaching target told any reporter the UT roster scared him off. A-what quality coach is afraid of a challenge? B-rosters in basketball can turn on a single player in a single class just ask Jamal Mashburn C-not putting much stock in unnamed sources “don’t tell anyone I told you but…”

Excuse me misread that. Pearl’s win percentage was much better. Still think this could be a quality hire.

Boy I just can’t get it right. White’s win percentage coming in is better. I guess though it’s apples to oranges.

Can anyone say Derrick Dooley? Doubt that Vol fans would be happy with this hire.

Didn’t Derek Dooley also come from LaTech? Can’t imagine the Vol fanbase being too thrilled with taking another coach from LaTech given the fact that Dooley didn’t pan out.

White I think is a better hire than this article indicates but logically you have to wonder just how well the fan base will respond to him?

Assume the fan base does not shoot this in the head, White could in a “few years” get them back rolling. I doubt it would be as exciting as Pearl, but a little more than Martin.

But heck who knows with UT.

As for Pearl, personally I loved it when he was at UT. He had some reasonable respect but injected excite off and on the court. I found myself watching several of UT games out of conference. Think about the Kansas game, it was Kansas they beat, correct?

The SEC needs teams that play a variety of styles, and can step out of the conference and periodically do some damage to other conferences. It makes the SEC stronger and more fun to watch. It was great what UT did in the NCAA this year!!

I hope Pearl does great at Auburn and that who ever UT hires gets them on track.

If White wants to leave his present job he would be better off at Missouri.

Whenever UT needs a coach and they can’t find any takers, they hire LA Tech’s coach (see: Derek Dooley).

I think much of the opposition to Cuonzo from the rich donors (withholding their planes for use, etc.) was very much like the same opposition to Tubby here – racist, and some of it blatant. “The white players deserve a white coach” was one choice quote I heard during Tubby. So White would be ideal.

Oh yeah, 10 years of not going to a final four isn’t what made fans mad, it was because he was black.

Isn’t it more likely a combination of the two? It’s silly for one side to say it was purely race and success or a lack thereof played no role but it’s equally ridiculous for someone else to imply race wasn’t a factor.

  19. What big time coach wants to go where the Lady Vols are more popular than the men’s team? I don’t know if it’s a factor, but I believe it is.

After following UK for 48 years, and from an officiating standpoint for that last 40, I am sick and tired of the SEC. This year highlighted my frustration with the SEC and UK basketball. Every year I look forward to the NCAA tournament because it greatly reduces the changes of us ever seeing SEC officials. The only game in this year’s tournament where officiating played into the game’s outcome but we were able to overcome it…the Wisconsin game. And, what do you know, there were 2 SEC officials. That should not be allowed to happen, particularly from one of the guys, Mike Stewart, who has been known to go out of his way not to give us a fair shake..and has T’d up Cal…he was the one that called the foul on Aaron that first walked then leaned into Aaron with Aaron’s hands straight up and not moving. The call should of been a walk. The better call would have been a no call. The wrong call was 3 free throws, and, you guess, it Mike Stewart could not run in there fast enough to make the call.

I used to pull for the other SEC schools when they were in the tournament and not playing us or in non-conference games, but no more. They DO NOTHING for UK. They go out of their way to minimize UK basketball. Officiating in our SEC games are a joke. I don’t want breaks or favors, I want the same officiating the other SEC team gets.

I don’t care who UT gets. I don’t care who Mizzou gets…. I just don’t care. Give some great non-conference games and get me to the NCAA tournament, and let me see a great run like we did this year…screw the SEC.

Is this Kentucky sports radio or Tennessee sports radio? Why the heck do we have a post dedicated to who UT hires for their basketball program. They sure as hell don’t post about our football search when we were looking for a new football coach.

Josh – We can either be knowledgeable fans OR be like you. I think most of us prefer to know what’s going on around us. Obviously you’ve heard this before, but if you don’t like it skip it. Why waste time clicking on it and typing a whole message about how it sucks? Pretty much the same thing I’ve done here…guess I ain’t to bright either.
