Team Canada in contact with Calipari/NCAA hoping to keep Murray for FIBA Championship

murray_jamal

You know it. I know it. Anyone who watched the Pan Am games knows it. Jamal Murray is a beast. The 18-year-old surprised many when he took a leading a role on the silver-medal Canadian national team this July – a squad that includes several pros. The FIBA Americas Championship tips off later this month in Mexico City, and according to this article today, the Canadian team is trying really hard to keep him for the tournament:

However, with Kentucky’s first semester scheduled to begin before the tournament opens, his availability remains uncertain. Triano, Steve Nash and Canada Basketball officials are in contact with famed Kentucky coach John Calipari and the NCAA daily, hoping to work something out that would allow Murray to participate in the qualifier.

With the NCAA season swiftly approaching, one would like Jamal to remain at Kentucky to build some rapport with this year’s squad. However, added experience against professional talent couldn’t hurt Murray’s development, right? It definitely beats going to class.

Kind of pushes the logic of a “Players First” University? I mean, if we really are, should we take the back seat to this basketball player’s wishes and desires? Interesting to see how this rolls out, I think?

Nothing that Sandy Bell and a few boosters can’t fix.

Cal: “We have people on the payroll up in Canada”

Sandy Bell “We sure do boss”

Cal: “Can’t they fix this? What are we paying them for? Do I have to do everything myself?”

Sandy Bell “They sure can boss”

The kid can do whatever he wants, but it does seem shortsighted to potentially throw away an entire year at UK so he can come off the bench for Team Canada for a couple weeks.

He’s guaranteed a spot on Team Canada even if he comes to UK. If he stays with Canada he’s not gonna play college ball this year.

I’m thinking, if he chooses to stick with Canada he’ll play overseas for a year and enter the draft next year.

    Come on down?

  5. “added experience against professional talent couldn’t hurt Murray’s development, right? It definitely beats going to class.”

Sorry but I disagree. Added experience that runs over into the school year and possibly practice is detrimental to team chemistry. Also, he still has to take classes even if they’re online.

Cal needs to provide the drop dead date and thats It. If he aint here, sorry the train has the left the station. We are Kentucky Basketball, you dont get to come and go as you please. I dont care what team you have a chance to play for. Kentucky Is no slouch, either you are all In and here, or you can pass the time til next years NBA draft elsewhere. Hes already had the chance to play for his country. The best coach for his future Is right here at Kentucky. All this Is doing Is taking away from time needed to develop chemistry and learn the system. Even amateur traveling teams don’t let players come and go as they please. Id like to say that Cal will do whats best for this team In the end. But, he has already proven he puts the players first coach. Which mean their priorities come before the university and the teams needs.

I agree with him. The “student athlete” idea is a joke. What would benefit him more, spending a couple of weeks working along side professionals in his field, or going over the syllabus of his intro to psychology course? Can’t say I blame kids for wanting to skip classes that won’t provide them much benefit in the long term.

After reading the article, it sounds like Team Canada is trying to find a way he can play. There was no indication he would not be with UK by the deadline.

    • binarysolo
      6:39 pm August 16, 2015 Permalink

See, here’s the thing. Murray can’t play for Canada for the qualifier AND report to UK by the deadline because the deadline comes before the tournament:

      — UK fall semester begins Aug 26.

      — Olympic Qualifer (which is what Team Canada wants Murray for) is Aug 31 – Sep 12.

It’s not up to Calipari whether Murray can play for Canada, this is entirely between Canada and the NCAA. And let’s be serious, is the NCAA going to bend the rules to help UK??

Hopefully, when the NCAA predictably says no to Murray getting a free pass, he’ll show up in time for classes and get in tune his new brothers.

I too am becoming skeptical that Murray ever plays a game for UK.

If he doesn’t there’s a bright side in that a kid like Hawkins that’s been busting is butt for Kentucky basketball for going on a 3rd season now will have a chance for more pt.

I wanna win but I don’t like seeing kids get recruited over either.

IF i were Murray, I would try to focus on UK. Trying to have it both ways aint gonna work and it also won’t help in terms of not building team chemistry. Its like an outsider walking in at the very last minute to show up and play. Kids get plenty exposure at UK. Steve Nash and Co can wait. Canada aint going anywhere. Getting to play at UK – once in a lifetime if this kid is planning on being a one and done, which is obvious.

I think if he’s going to play at Kentucky he would want to be with the rest of the guys, he would only be around what, 5 or 6 months, and like what was said earlier, this will probably be he’s only time at collage, but its his decision, just would hope that playing for UK would mean alittle more then what it looks to.

I remember making a comment (and getting grief) about the 1st day of school being AUG 26 and if Murray will be enrolled and IN CLASS by then since this Fiba Americas crap runs through SEPT 12. Can he miss the entire summer and the first 3 weeks of school? I also mentioned how will this go over with the other players, since most of them have been bonding, weight and skill training and working hard since early JUNE! How will they feel if this guy comes there and literally goes to school for 2 quarters will they have been working hard for 2 entire summer sessions. If Jamal comes Jamal plays and likely STARTS, will this cause CHEMISTRY ISSUES? Team Canada needs to back off! Jamal needs Kentucky as much if not more than Kentucky needs him.

3 goggles actually. As every year, Louisville sees dozens of these each time they play UK, you know, with Cal’s teams dusting Little Brother 8 of the last 9. Cardinals still playing the PR teams without PR TOP 3 scorers participating? When you get back, I am sure the Louisville YMCA has same caliber teams for you to play. Maybe the CJ will cover them, and write about how great they look.

I don’t like Murray being so late arriving. This team will have some tricky chemistry because it’s so heavy with guards who like to handle the ball. It’s something that can easily work itself out in time, but I’d rather that happen before the season starts, not while we’re playing real games.
