TBT: That Time Kenny Walker Killed a Guy

kenny-walker-dunks

Allow this to serve as a friendly reminder for why they call him Kenny “Sky” Walker.

UK’s second all-time leading scorer is the Wildcats’ most accomplished dunker.  During an elite era of dunkers in the 80s, he took home the Slam Dunk Championship from the NBA’s All-Star weekend.  He’s the only Wildcat with this distinguished achievement (John Wall winning as a “team” doesn’t count).  You’ll understand why after watching this video.

After seeing his Senior Day ceremonies, you’ll witness probably the most ferocious dunk you’ve ever seen (around 1:00-mark).  Saying he killed a guy might be hyperbole, but I would not be surprised if Barlow from Notre Dame pressed charges against Walker for assault and battery.

I don’t know what happened after, but hopefully Kenny found a safe house and laid low for awhile.

A tip of the cap to Jeff Drummond for rediscovering this glorious highlight reel.

Kenny was amazing. I still look back, and marvel that he didn’t make it in the NBA.

7 years with an NBA paycheck isn’t bad.

True. But really thought he would excel.

Great clips of Sky Walker, but the crowning moment has to be Happy Chandler singing My Old Kentucky Home. I shed a tear or two listening to it.

That was awesome to watch. Forgot how amazing Walker was it was so long ago. The Lee comment is spot on! Same thing I was thinking when I was watching. That’s what I thought Marcus Lee was going to be…or at least up there. Lee was one of my favs…hate it worked out like it did for him 🙁

    Walker was just nasty though

I have always over Kenny — fantastic athlete, player, and representative of the university and entire state. I can still remember what I believe was his first game when Cawood said “draw a circle around this young man’s name, he’s gonna be special. Ole Cawood was right. Love ya Kenny Walker.

A KW dunk display without the one over LSU’s Jerry ‘Ice’ Reynolds is incomplete…

That video was great. I wish the crowd at Rupp was like this today.

I think it’s the same people just 30 years older in need of hip replacements.

I LOVE this – but hearing Joe Dean, Sr. – man this really takes me back to my youth. Thanks for the video!!!

On the topic of great venues to play. This shows Rupp Arena in its greatest times when the entire building was a eruption zone and we didn’t have to designate one.

I appreciate the video of Kenny Sky and getting to hear Joe Dean. I also shed a few tears hearing Happy sing My Old Kentucky Home. It has a particularly pull on my heartstrings since I haven’t lived in Kentucky for many years. Thanks for the memories!
