Tai Wynyard’s Team Falls Short of 3×3 Championship

Looking to repeat as a 12-seed at the FIBA 3×3 World Championships in Kazakhstan, the defending champs came up short.  Tai Wynyard’s New Zealand fell in the semi-finals to eventual champ Qatar, 21-16.  They finished 4th after losing their final game to Italy.

Last year’s reigning MVP, Wynyard played like one again this year.  In games scored by 1’s and 2’s, Wynyard scored 63 points in seven games, the third-most in the tournament and only four behind the overall tournament leader.

With the tournament reaching a conclusion, Tai should be bound for Lexington soon.  In other news from Kentucky’s international basketballers…

Just like Karl-Anthony Towns, Trey Lyles has allegiances elsewhere and will not be able to play for Team USA.  No word on whether the Saskatoon native will rock the Maple Leaf for his country this summer in Rio.

  1. Actually from what I recall Trey could have played for Team USA but he chose to play for Canada. However it may be at this point it’s too late to play for us.

Team Canada still hasn’t qualified for Rio. They have one more shot at a tournament in Manila next month. No word yet on whether Lyles or Murray will play in the qualifying tournament.
