Horrible news out of New York, where Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim struck and killed a pedestrian last night.

According to, a man was walking outside of his vehicle after it had crashed on Interstate 690, when Boeheim drove by and hit him. The accident happened around midnight. Earlier in the evening, the Orangemen beat Louisville 69-49. Boeheim is reportedly cooperating with investigation.

Awful, awful news.

UPDATE: says alcohol was not a factor, as Boeheim’s blood-alcohol levels were 0.00 and he passed a field sobriety test, but there was freezing rain in the area, which may have led to poor driving conditions.

UPDATE x2: More details have emerged. According to police, Boeheim swerved to avoid the car, which was in the middle of the road after crashing due to bad weather. Boeheim released this statement via Syracuse.

How does this happen? Jim didn’t see there was an accident? Didn’t slow down and steer wide of the crashed vehicle? More details would be nice.

Probably not a lot of details released just yet. If the other car had been in an accident, their lights may not have been working. If the driving conditions were poor then it would probably be extremely hard to see a darkened car or a person. Sometimes accidents just happen. No need to start trying to find someone to blame.

Maybe there was an accident and the guy was walking well past it, there was freezing rain, and it was midnight when the accident happened. Maybe it was an accident and there was no malice

Saw an article on cbs that said Coach swerved to go around the wrecked car {which was in the middle of the interstate} and when he did that he struck the guy. Car in middle of road and bad weather and who knows what the guy was wearing {dark or bright clothing} added up to unfortunate incident. Did not mention speed coach was going or anything about how far away from wrecked car till he hit the guy.

Sometimes bad things just happen. It doesn’t always have to be someone’s fault.

690 is a mess even in good weather conditions

His players will pay attention from now on when he tells them to play with a killer instinct.

This actually happened to me when I was 21. Someone just ran out into the road. It was raining , I wasn’t speeding and wasn’t drinking. It’s a terrible thing to have to live with the rest of your life even though you know it’s an accident. People should realize there are two victims in these types of accidents.

This situation is no joke or laughing matter… After he had a bladder issue earlier this year and now this horrible accident, when will Syracuse push this man into retirement. I get it from Jim’s point. No man wants to go into retirement from doing what they love, but these incidents are starting to add up for the Syracuse coach.

So you are saying he should be forced out? Really a stupid comment. We don’t know all the details but I am 99.9 % sure he did not leave there saying “if I see someone on the road I am taking them out”. Dude it was an accident, like a comment above said it happened to them a while ago. Not like Jim was drunk, it seems weather, the car in the middle of the road and possibly the guys choice to walk where he was walking that caused it. Coach just happened to be the guy in that spot at that time, could have been anyone. I agree with your first sentence but after that shows stupidity.

This is just sad only. Not a joking matter, and inappropriate to presume anything.

God bless this poor soul who lost his life, and the family he left behind. God bless Jim Boeheim and his family. Coach’s wife Juli is a Lexington Ky native.

I’m sorry for the family and their loss but a bigger issue is on the table. The big issue that really concerns me is the DA coming to his defense before the investigation is completed. Almost feels like his position will give him a free ride even if he’s found to be at fault.

Pretty misleading title there don’t you think? How about maybe saying, “ Unfortunate accident”? I know you didn’t mean to just be misleading but you should change it. Thanks TT!
